How to install a linux software package
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 13, 2010
Please tell me that Ubuntu/Linux provide some sort of executable versions for installing software packages? Because I have been looking at some software downloads (TightVNC for example) which just supply a bunch of source code modules. What is the average user suppose to do with this stuff?

location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 7, 2006
I have a linux machine that I will be using to connect to my work VPN. The VPN is controlled by a Symantec Firewall/VPN box and our Windows Machines use the Symantec Client VPN to connect to the VPN Box.
I was curious how I can do this with Linux. Is there an opensource VPN software I can use? also, is it possible to do a remote desktop connection to a Windows machine via Linux?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I plan to buy a new laptop and install Linux mint. How do I get started?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 16, 2013
I plan to buy a new laptop and install Linux mint. How do I get started and how do I choose which laptop to buy? What is the best way to put Linux on a laptop that already has windows on it. (I have been told that all laptops in the uk have windows already installed. Is this true?) I would like a computer that runs well but do not need masses of space.
Tripleboot Linux distros how and where to install GRUB2?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 8, 2011
This is my Scenario!
Live CD Ubuntu 11.04
Live CD Mint 11.10
Live CD SuSE Gnome 11.4
I would like to have each of them boot from a partition on my HD, easily configurable. I boot all distros OK now, but configuration is a pain. For example, If I type "sudo grub-install /dev/sda" from Mint all is OK, but I thought an "update-grub" should do it. I just don't know enough. So, pretty easy questions for those who do:
* When I install from a live CD, where should I place the boot loader in each case? In my case, I've always said "/dev/sda", and it works but is troublesome.
* If I install each boot loader to the actual partition I'm installing the distro to, there should be (afaik) one "main" boot loader at /dev/sda, and chainloading to the others!?! How does this work, and how can I install that?
Thanks for any help!
How do Linux software vendors make money?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 20, 2003
Probably a stoopid question, but I'm curious.
If all Linux software is open source (i.e. free to compile/install etc.) then how can a company making a program for Linux make money if it has to, in effect, keep it open source so anyone can use it for nothing.

How do I uninstall RedHat Linux Enterprise and install Windows XP?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 2, 2008
I have a lappy which I bought some 8 months ago. I have got Linux with it and they also gave me the CDs.
Now... I am sick with Linux and want to get back to Windows.
I have bought Windows XP and tried booting the lappy while the XP CD is in.
I have got 'Press any key to boot from this CD...'.
I pressed a key and then it said 'Configuring hardware for the setup'(something like that)...
Then... its disappearing and the screen is going all blank and black. I waited for an hour and got no response.
I did this for about 10 times now and I am becoming much more sicker with Linux.
Please.... Help me out!!
Thank a lot in advance!

Aptget (DSL Linux/Debian) How to install local packages
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 25, 2006
Hello, I'm using dsl linux with the apt-get feature installed so that i can install Debian packages. My question is this: I have one computer with an internet connection and one without.
How can I download the packages (and dependencies if any) on the computer with internet access and then install those packages onto the other computer (using a usb flash drive to transfer the files).
Apt-get works great, but only if you have internet access. Anyone know of a solution for my little situation? What do debian people without internet access usually do to install packages?
-Thanks for the help
