location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 1, 2010
I upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.4 LTS via CD (alternate). Everything went okay while upgrading but after restarting I found a problem.
An error occurred while mounting /proc/bus/usb
Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery
And so I have to press S everytime I turn on my laptop. Can someone tell me what I should do..
Thanks in advance.

What is the difference between whereis and which commands
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 11, 2008
Hello, I was wondering what was is the difference between the output of which and whereis when it comes to binaries. I mean when I type for example
whereis man I get something this (I'm using Ubuntu 8.04):
man: /usr/bin/man /usr/local/man /usr/share/man /usr/share/man/man7/man.7.gz /usr/share/man/man1/man.1.gz
If I type which man, I get this:
If /usr/bin/man /usr/local/man /usr/share/man are supposed to be the binary files for the man command then why which only displays /usr/bin/man? I read the man pages but I couldn't figure it out.
running nethack in wizard mode?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 26, 2007
Have had ubuntu running on my computer for about 2 weeks - love it! have used windows once it that time, the rest has been on linux!
My question is - I've been playing nethack on windows for a few years, and now have it installed on ubuntu 6.10. When I try to run it in wizard mode by using the command nethack -u wizard -D, once it loads up I get told I'm not authorized and need to be logged in as root, which I can't do on ubuntu...
have tried sudo nethack -u wizard -D, no effect. Have also searched these forums, but can't find anything.
Can anyone tell me a way around this problem please? All other linux distros I've tried treat root as a seperate user, but ubuntu doesn't seem to, so what can I do?
Thanks in advance,

Basic (probably) newbie questions, lots of 'em

I did a couple of searches and couldn't find answers to these questions, but if I missed something - a definite possibility :) - please feel free to direct me.
I have never used Linux; I have one friend who does and I just sent him these same questions. But I thought it would be good to post them here too. Here is what I said to him (edited in spots for this forum):
Long story short - my two-year-old laptop recently died. Replacing it with something I like has been a major hassle, so I'm starting to think that maybe Linux is the way to go. I have a few basic questions:
- How big of a hard drive would I need, generally?
- Is there any special processor and/or minimum processor speed I would need - Intel, AMD, older Macs (PowerPC, I think it's called), etc.?
- Will I be able to run the software I need with Linux? Mostly I use office productivity stuff - database, spreadsheet, and occasionally word processing - and Windows' Paint program and Irfanview for simple image manip

If so, what if any, were the challneges that you had? What went smoothly
I want to get this board because it looks like a stellar system and perfect for Linux.
I'm quite curious about the AzureWave WiFi drivers for linux.
Thanks for the input.
HTOP too many cores
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 29, 2010
So I have this VPS system running Linux, and the NOC I am using just upgraded the machine to 24 cores instead of 8. This caused a major problem when I use HTOP, now the information I need to see is so low on my SSH screen I can't see it. How do I limit HTOP to showing X number of cores? So I can actually see all my info?
