I need some help installing Tor
- date: December 7, 2012
Hi, everyone, I wont to install Tor and this is what I followed .
Option one: Tor on Debian squeeze, Debian sid, or Debian testing
If you're using Debian, just run
apt-get install tor as root.
Note that this might not always give you the latest stable Tor version, but you will receive important security fixes. To make sure that you're running the latest stable version of Tor, see option two below.
Now Tor is installed and running. Move on to step two of the "Tor on Linux/Unix" instructions.
Option two: Tor on Ubuntu or Debian
Do not use the packages in Ubuntu's universe. In the past they have not reliably been updated. That means you could be missing stability and security fixes.
You'll need to set up our package repository before you can fetch Tor. First, you need to figure out the name of your distribution. A quick command to run is lsb_release -c or cat /etc/debian_version. Here's a quick mapping:
Debian unstable (sid) is "s
Error opening terminal: xterm Terminal type "xterm" unknown
- date: April 9, 2009
I'm getting error messages as above, but there are other symptoms. I think trying to install OpenEmm caused the problem though I can't be absolutey certain of this.
I get the two error messages as above logged in as a user trying to run either pine or lynx, but I don't get the same messages running the same apps under root. Fluxbox also seems to run OK under root, but I can't get it to run under a user.
When I log in under kdm (?), as a user trying to run fluxbox, I get the kdm background and after a few seconds an xterm open up, but I have no menus, the only input is via the xterm. If I log in as root, fluxbox works OK.
I'm sure there are other symptoms as well, but this is as much as I've researched so far. I may be wrong, but it appears to be something to do with ncurses. I'm no newbie, but I'm a little out of my depth here and any help would be much appreciated.
Would a sensible step be to reinstall slack over the current installation, or do I need to reinstall a
xterm error display not set
- date: September 8, 2007
I am running slackware 12.0 and when I run some scripts I get the following error:
Warning: This program is an suid-root program or is being run by the root user.
The full text of the error or warning message cannot be safely formatted
in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the
program as a non-root user or by removing the suid bit on the executable.

[SOLVED] Remote Desktop Error: Failed to Load Session Ubuntu2d
- date: January 13, 2013
Okay so I am a noob to linux but not PCs in general so I'll get to the point here. I'm trying to connect remote desktop from a windows PC to a server (yes I noticed if you mention ms or windows you should post in general, but I'm not allowed since this is my first post). So, first here are the specs:
Dell AMD E-450 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (1.65 GHz)
4 GB RAM
Windows 7 (64-bit)
Internet: Cable modem 15mbps/2.5mbps
OVH Kimsufi Intel Atom D425 1.8 GHz (512k cache)
Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 "Precise Pangolin" LTS + x2go (64-bit)
Internet: 100mbps/100mbps dedicated line
So I have been able to set the server up and I have played with it a little bit and gotten more comfortable with the commands, but now I tried to connect remote desktop and I get this:
So I tried to do a little research and my guess was gdm wasn't running. So I installed it and started the service okay, but I keep getting that same mes
How do I get Vidalia/TOR to work on Ubuntu Linux?
- date: July 9, 2011
I've downloaded Vidalia, but instead of No Configuration, I chose One-Time Restart, and now whenever I try to open TOR, it says that it is already running. I've rebooted already, but that didn't help at all. I would like to start using TOR as an experiment and to remain anonymous. Sure, there's HideMyAss! add-on for Google Chrome, but I just want to try it all out. Can someone help me?
This is what it says
"Vidalia detected that the Tor software exited unexpectedly.
Please check the message log for recent warning or error messages."
"Jul 09 23:50:12.088 [Notice] Tor v0.2.1.30. This is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity. (Running on Linux x86_64)

Strange error message when logging in Xubuntu 12.04
- date: July 7, 2013
Every time I log in, for some reason, I get a little box that pops up in the middle of my screen that says:
invalid option: -session
It just started yesterday and I'm not sure what's causing it. I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 64-bit.

Jut tried to install Ubutu 12.04 on my pc that I had uninstalled Windows and formatted the drive prior to installing Ubutu. Just about all the way through to the end of the installation I got a message stating "Installer has encountered an unrecoverable error and will now start a desktop session for you to .........". Cant remember the rest sorry!
The OS seems to run ok from that point once the desktop is loaded from the cd but system will not boot properly without having the Ubutu installation cd in the drive. Then of course it tries again to install.
I went through the process again telling it to erase Ubutu and reinstall Ubutu with the seme error message at the end.
