Need to create an admin user on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 4, 2008
I am pretty new to RHEL and it has been a while since having to perform any sort of administration. Against my better judgement, I have been using the root account for most functions. I would like to create an admin account for these administrative functions. I understand the concept of RHEL's file permission (rwx) system. My background though is more in Windows where we would create a user account and add it to a group that has admin-level rights. It doesn't seem to work that way in Linux. It looks like you have to grant access via file permissions to what you would like the account to do. I would have to imagine there is an easier way of accomplishing this? If anyone could give me some insight into all this and how to create a user with admin-level rights I would greatly appreciate it.

Installing Ubuntu/SuSe over Red Hat enterprise Linux 5
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 23, 2008
I want to replace my RHEL 5 with either Ubuntu or SuSe. I tried older versions of SuSe but they give some error while installing and the installation stops. I want to keep my WINDOWS partition as it is. Please suggest versions of Ubuntu/SuSe that may over-write the existing RHEL 5.
Thanks in advance
SSH working locally but not remotely on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- date: January 6, 2012
I am new to linux and I am trying install red hat enterprise onto a spare dell power edge server that I have and enable a remote SSH connection to the box.
This is a fresh install of red hat enterprise and the SSH doesn't appear to be working remotely. I am attempting to connect directly from my laptop so the issue doesn't lay with port forwarding on my router.
I am using NMAP to port scan the box and it is showing that no ports are open at all, even after disabling iptables completely.
When I run service --status-all
I can see the Open SSH daemon is running and when I try SSH local to the machine 'ssh [email protected]
' it lets me log in.
I have added to the host.allow file the text SSHD= ALL and checked that there is nothing in the host.deny.
The port scan shows port 22 is closed and thus when I try to SSH using putty from my laptop, the connection is refused.
Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
How to Backup Red Hat Enterprise Linux Apache & MySQL in a Wintel environment
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 21, 2013
I've recently been given the task of backing up my company's Apache website and MYSQL DBs. We're using Microsoft DPM 2012 for all our windows servers, but currently do not have anything in place for MYSQL or Apache.
I'm looking for advice on how I can backup MYSQL and Apache - preferably with a DPM agent, but failing this, then may be just schedule backup jobs to a Samba or NFS share and get DPM to backup the share.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Installing openoffice 3.4 on red hat enterprise linux 5 (tikanga)server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 21, 2012
I ve been a unix user(solaris) for some time now and decided to try my hands on Red Hat enterprise linux 5.5 (Tikanga) Server OS, I decided to start with installation of common applications that would take me away from complete dependence on microsoft word and star office just for a change; after downloading the installation package below; Apache_OpenOffice_incubating_3.4.0_Linux_x86_install-rpm_en-US.tar
I unpacked with the; tar -xvf Apache_*.tar, and got the installation folder; en-US, I proceeded to installing with the rpm -viUF *.rpm command for all the different packages in the en-US folder.
It installed very properly but failed to start when I change into the /opt/openoffice.org3/program and executed the command ./soffice.
here is the error massage I got;
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/../basis-link/ure-link/bin/javaldx: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.7' not found (required by /opt/openoffice.org/ure/bin/../lib/libuno_sal.so.3)
