ubuntu 9.04 & Steam games
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 2, 2009
I had to upgrade to 9.04 because of some issues i was having with audacity playback not working (really didnt want to but i had to in order to use the version that worked). But my point is now everytime that i start a steam game before it gets to the menu it closes/crashes. I CAN use steam itself just fine. the only problem is with the games. Idk if this occurs with any other games but if anyone has an idea of what may be wrong PLEASE help
The only games i have tested are
CSS - Crashes before menu
L4D - Crashes before menu
TF2 - Crashes before menu
It could just be valve games i will add an update as i try more.

How do you get Steam + steam games to run decently under Wine using PlayOnLinux?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 4, 2010
I'm assuming this goes on this board since the majority of this depends on wine.
Hello, I recently switched to Ubuntu, and I have noticed Steam and any steam games seem to run like crap on PlayOnLinux under Wine. I mean I can get them to run, but they're much slower and such then they were on Windows. I currently keep windows installed in order to play games simply by rebooting, but I'd like to keep everything in ubuntu. Steam also will glitch when I move the windows (they jump around), and some windows will keep opening back up if I attempt to close them, and when a notification comes up (for like an instant message or the like) if I click it the chat window for the person will not appear, and sometimes if I move the window it will just disappear completely and I won't be able to find it again. I also never hear the sounds that are supposed to play when I receive an instant message.
Does anyone know any tricks to get Steam to run decently (or close to it) along with Steam games? I use
Ubuntu and Win games on Wine
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 26, 2013
Is this true about someone saying that Wine will never play games and perform the same was as playing the same games on Windows systems? Basicly if you had two the same systems and one had Ubuntu with latest Wine and one had Win 7 will Win 7 allways perform better on Windows games no matter how updated Wine is?
Also with the new Ubuntu 13.04 will that still not perform as good as Windows even if you have the latest drivers and Wine version on Ubuntu?
Games on Wine (Steam, WoW, etc)

Hi guys and gals,
My games either run incredibly slow or freeze my system. I'll start HL2 games, they will run the intro decently (some strange misplacement until it finishes loading), but after that it's either laggy or it completely freezes. It either does that repeated sound over and over, or I can hear my programs in the background but can't do anything to get my desktop back (I have System Monitor F12 keybound) - then computer reboots. It's also worth noting that when I start the game, my other monitor (dual) turns off then back on for a couple seconds - not sure why.. driver requirement to prevent something maybe - happens when I play a video too.
Specs: Ubuntu 10.10 x64, XFX 5850 Radeon HD, Core i7, Corsair 6GB triple channel, WD Black, OCZ 750w gold
Pretty much an above average rig. It runs most of my games 100-300 FPS on Faildows (zzzz ).
I'm using the latest drivers from "Additional Drivers" - ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX.
I've tried quite a bit. Everything I coul
What are some good games to play through wine?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 10, 2009
Hello Ubuntu forums
Whats are some good windows games to run through wine that work very well? I have recently played through Prey and Quake 4 on native Ubuntu and am rather bored with gaming on games I already own. My hardware (in sig) is not the best in the world but it can handle Cod4 on high and Crysis on low/medium settings so most games made 2007/2008 will probably be fine. I would prefer suggestions on slighter older games though since I can buy them cheap. The only genre of gaming I hate is mmorpg, please no War of Warcraft.

Do you pay for games and applications that you run through wine ?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 21, 2008
I was just wondering, about this, because it would be stupid to buy a game that doesn't work. You can give it back, but if you've bought it online there is no cash-back.
I'd rather ask a friend his CD and check, can I run it. Or I get the demo, but I've seen (in appdb.winehq.org) that demos may not run but the retail's do.
