Whatever You Do, Don't Buy a Chromebook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 19, 2011
Google's cloud-only Chrome OS vision is simply not baked, and it's not likely to ever to come together
The first Chromebooks, from Samsung and Acer, are finally starting to ship, after a six-month tease by Google for its foundational Chrome OS. (Samsung's white 3G model is now shippng, and its three other models and Acer's sole models are available for preorder.) Please, save youself $350 to $500 and avoid these cloud-only laptops. Spend your money on something you'll both use and enjoy, like an iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab 10.1. I write these words from a Chromebook, where my 802.11n network feels like it's traversing molasses when using Google Docs and other Internet service.

inittab entries do not start components in Red Ha
- date: March 30, 2011
I did an a new installation of Red Hat 5 with kernel version 2.6.18-194.el5. I noticed that when i tried installing Oracle clusterware on the servers , the crs deamon inserted in the inittab does not startup. The reason attributed to it was because of init problem . A quick test was to insert the entry test:5:once:echo "HELLO TEST" > /test.log in the inittab and use init q command. This should create a file test.log if its fine but I discovered that the entires in the inittab are not executed. Kindly assist in proferring solution to the init problem. My inittab is as below :
~]# cat /etc/initab
# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up
# the system in a certain run-level.

# Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes

Do I HAVE to sub partition a storage drive?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 25, 2011
Just after some quick advice :-
I formatted a new 2tb drive with XFS filesystem
it appears as /dev/sdc on my system and I can mount it ok (I've copied stuff to it and can read and write from it fine)
However when I do fdisk -l it says invalid partition table for this drive only.
I'm assuming I should have created a partition like /dev/sdc1 and then formatted it?
Is there any risk/disadvantage in leaving it as it is - it will hold media files mostly.
403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Yesterday, i installed Ubuntu Server 11.04 on my home PC coz i wanted what its like to host my own site. Everything went well with the installation. The only problem i can't seem to solve right now is the error i get when viewing my site on the web.
I get this:
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Apache/2.2.17 (Ubuntu) Server at 192.168.1.101 Port 80
i have already tried using chmod 755 but i still have the error above. Weird thing though is i can view the site normally when a user is logged on the server.
MPlayer + other video players do not work, HP DV71451NR, Radeon HD3200, Lucid
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 10, 2011
I recently upgraded to resolve a problem with Wireless. The new kernel does wireless fine, but along the way my video playback was destroyed.
Prior to upgrading video looked great. Now it's a dog's breakfast. The longer it goes, the muddier the output gets, and the audio is filled with pops and cracks.
I've tried to do research, and it seems there is a lot of concern about FGLRX, which is apparently a proprietary driver from ATI, but how it fits into Catalyst, I do not know. I tried downloading and installing the Catalyst 10.8 package from ATI, but it didn't seem to change anything. The current Catalyst version is 11.6.
It's possible that ATI has abandoned lower graphics sets, including the HD3200, but I can't get that confirmed.
Athlon X2 CPU, 2.2 gHz, 4 gig memory, 2 1/2 terabyte hard drives, Lucid Lynx 10.04 32-bit.
I don't mind trying suggestions out, and I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. I don't know what to try next.

SSH Command Keys Do Not Work When Logged in as New User
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 25, 2013
I have a really weird problem. When I log in normally everything works fine. However, if I switch to the new user, which is not in the sudoers file(shouldn't be relevant), all command keys don't work. When I press the up key, for example, it displays ^[[A. Also the terminal always displays a '$' no matter what directory I am in.
I am pretty sure this is not a su problem because I can do sudo su without a problem. If I login directly to the new user, with SSH, I have the same problems.
http over browser works but ssh/nslookup/ping do not work
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 17, 2011
I am mostly new to ubuntu and networking.
I am able to browse the internet using my browser but anything else like trying to ssh/ping/nslookup does not work.
I believe it is a configuration issue where my network configuration and in particular my nameserver is not correctly specified but I don't know how to fix
Ping not working:
$ ping http://www.cnn.com
ping: unknown host http://www.cnn.com
This ssh server was up when I tried this:
ssh: connect to host unix.andrew.cmu.edu port 22: Connection refused
Nslookup not working:
$ nslookup http://www.cnn.com
** server can't find http://www.cnn.com: NXDOMAIN
And finally, my /etc/network/interfaces file:
iface lo inet loopback
How come by browser can find http://www.cnn.com but ping can't?
