Unity 2D vs. Unity 3D
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 21, 2011
Since Unity 3D feels a bit laggy on my laptop, and I dont like its color (cant find how to edit the color??!!), I've decided to switch to Unity 2D, since I like the dark look more.
Now, for some reason, I have to maximize the dash every single time that I open it, which gets quite frustrating.. Is there a way to make Unity 2D maximize by default?
If not, is there a way to make Unity 3D open up a bit faster? (the delay is not that bad but I would like it to be faster) And, can I change the color of the dash?
My laptop has 2 GB RAM and a dual core CPU which should be sufficient for running Unity.
I'm concerned about the direction in which Ubuntu is heading. Sure it looks a bit more sleek and everything, but IMO they are trading off productivity to achieve this.
Unity 2D vs Unity 3D

Hi everyone! How can I tell if I have Unity 2D rather than 3D? If I have 2D instead of 3D, how do I get 3D? What is the difference?
I am using an Acer Aspire 1810T netbook with Ubuntu 11.10.
Unity 2D vs 3D Behavior.

I've been comparing 2D and 3D Unity on my CR-48 netbook to compare what would run better. So far, I think this netbook has enough power to run 3D without issue since I am seeing no benefits to 2D just yet.
That said, I'm curious about something. If you click on the Ubuntu icon in the upper left and then browse through the applications menu, I noticed in 2D the menu has momentum to it. When I scroll and let go, it'll continue for a little bit. On 3D, however, once I stop scrolling, it stops dead in its tracks.
I like that behavior, because when I see something I want and I stop right there, I want to be able to select it, not wait for it for another 2-3 seconds to stop moving before I can select it.
I know Unity 2D right now is very limited on features. But I'm curious if there's a way, perhaps through a gconf setting, to adjust this behavior so it's more of a static scroll?
I'm also curious if anybody knows how to change the icon size for the Unity bar in 2D land as well...
Unity, 2d vs 3d on 1015PEM

I just heard about unity 2d and thought i would give it a go on the netbook that is running 11.04 believing it would run faster.
That was not the case at all.
What i found was that it took a very long time to come out of hibernation and even when i saw the desktop i was still not able to do anything for an even longer time. Apps take longer to load and it very much reminded me of win98se in more ways than one.
So I tweaked and fiddled for a while but could not figure out what was causing it.
I find Unity 3d runs very well indeed anyway and have found the switch to the new style very easy (I admit i only just installed unity on my desktop last night, i was using the more traditional gnome layout)
I was wondering if anyone else ran into the same problem as i did
and if they overcame it , how much improvement is there?
Thanks in advance
2d vs. 3d

I just purchased a Shuttle model XS36V and installed Ubuntu 12.04. When I log in, I am able to select between 2d and 3d. I select 3d. However, after the session is initiated, $DESKTOP_SESSION reveals that I am actually running in 2d. First, it would seem to me that I would not be presented with selection options if 3d was not available. Is that the case? If so, why am I winding up in 2d? I realize that Ubuntu 3d doesn't work with vintage video hardware. However, it would be a bit of a surprise for me to learn that it doesn't pretty much work across the board with new hardware currently being sold. So, basically, I am trying to figure out where I stand. Do I need to return this thing or what? Thanks for any input.

I've recently updated some packages, and since then I can't log in with ubuntu3D, I am forwarded to ubuntu 2D. I have 12.04. What to do ?

Hey there. I am using a laptop with VIA Chrome9 HC IGP chipset. (VN896)
Slackware 13 (32 bit). Using openchrome driver
When I run "glxinfo", I can't find anything saying DIRECT RENDERING yes.
When I tried glxgears, FPS is 170 ~ 190.
I thought there is no direct rendering happening since when I load DRI and DRI2,
glxgears shows a bit slower FPS, 150 ~ 160.
When i disabled dri and dir2, I get 170 ~ 190.
Reading the docs from openchrome:
It says that DRI is not implemented. So does it mean that I have to accept
the fact that there will be no real 3D (hardware) acceleration on my laptop?
3d vs. 2d

It was my understanding that, although not identical, 2d was very similar to 3d. I'm seeing vast differences. For example, in 3d I can easily drag a Launcher icon to a new location. Not so in 2d. How do I relocate Launcher icons in 2d?
[SOLVED] Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running in 2D mode instead of 3D. ATI Radeon 9200SE
- date: May 3, 2012
This is my first experience with Unity after my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS for the last two years.
I am trying to configure it, but when I run MyUnity program I obtain the following message: "Ubuntu is running in 2D mode. Many Features will not be available"
When executing "glxinfo" it appears that I have Direct Rendering in my ATI Radeon 9200.
How can I correct this to have Unity 3D?
Thank you all in advance.
