root password is not working for su in terminal
location: linuxexchange.com - date: January 1, 1970
I'm using rhel 5, when i'm working in terminal first i typed su command and by mistake i entered copy command and some other characters, after realising i've made a mistake then i came out and continued with copy command in terminal.
after some time when i tried to login by using su and with password it says "incorrect password".
So i logged out and entered root login for gui and it works well, but i'm not able to use the same password for su.
can some one get around this issue?

password history not working with NIS clients
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 15, 2009
I have successfully enabled password history on my NIS server by adding
remember=24 to my "password sufficient" line in /etc/pam.d/system-auth.
If a user attempts to change password on the NIS server, history is checked, and /etc/security/opasswd is updated on the server.
If the same user attempts to change the password using a NIS client, the history is not checked.
I made the same enhancement on the client system-auth file (added remember=24) , and checked the client /etc/security/opasswd (it's empty). If user successfully changes the password on the NIS client, the server opasswd file is NOT updated. Am I missing a NIS config option in system-auth file ?

SSH login without password not working as expected.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 5, 2010
Hello all,
There is this one server running CentOS5.4 Final which has certain application like Bugzilla. I have setup ssh on it and setup is for password less authentication. Have also setup PasswordAuthentication to no.
So with password authentication should succeed. But it is. Though password less authentication is working fine, but I am also able to login using password.

[SOLVED] ssh scp key not working to ssh/scp without password
location:
linuxquestions.com - date:

I have Server1 and Server2, i want to be able to scp from Server1 to Server2 without being prompted for a password. Here's what I did. All of this is under the same username and password on both servers.
On Server1, I did a "ssh-keygen -t rsa", then copied the contents of id_rsa.pub.
On Server2, I vi'd the the .ssh/authorized_keys in that users home directory and pasted the info i just copied.
Now from Server1 when I do a "scp testfile
[email protected]:/tmp" i still get prompted for a password.
On Server1 and Server2 the .ssh directory in that user's directory is 700 for permissions.
Any ideas?

no password ssh not working as it used to

I backup stuff on my home machine by rsyncing with my work machine. I have to pull from work because I can't see my work machine externally.
The process is usually as follows:
1) logon to visible machine at work
2) login to my machine
3) switch to root (i have a external HD that only root can see)
4) run rsync script
Since there are several rsync commands I set up no password ssh by copying the
[email protected] public key in to my authorised keys. THen out of the blue this stopped working.
I cannot get it to work again, even by starting all over from scratch. On my home network public keys work.
I allow access via ssh to my home network using a non standar port and my hostname is set via ddclient, although my ISP tends to give me the same IP address at all times anyway.
How can I trouble shoot this?
Many thanks,
Dave
SSH login not working following password change
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 11, 2008
Hi all,
I recently had an issue where I could no longer su to root when logged into an SSH session using Putty on a windows box. I could login using my username and password, but when I entered the root password after typing the 'su' command I got authentication failure. The wiered thing was that if I SSH'd from a linux box it all worked perfectly, including su'ing to root.
I now have a problem using Putty to login using my own username and password. This was all working perfectly until I changed my password. As soon as I changed my password I could no longer login via an ssh session. I can login locally so I know my credentials are correct, but I cannot log in using an SSH session. Putty gives me an 'access denied' message.
I should also mention that this all still works great when establishing an ssh connection from a linux box. The only time I get issues is when ssh'ing from any Windows box running any ssh client (I've tried several).
Can anyone help me?
Many thanks,
please wait...
