Acer C720 Chromebook and Ubuntu
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 4, 2014
I have been thinking about getting the subject Acer and installing Ubuntu on it. With the limited 16G SSD there is not a lot of room so I might upgrade to a 64G SSD.
My questions are,
if you use ChrUbuntu, is it better to dual boot (probably what I would do for performance ) or boot to Chrome and then hot switch to ubuntu?
Will the system support the Unity or Gnome desktop?
I have been testing 14.04 and its very stable and efficient. How might one install this and has anyone done this?
I would need the keyboard trackpad to work.

Today is the first day back at uni, and I brought along my newly acquired c720 to do work on. I noticed that when I first opened it in my first class, the battery was at 85% and seemed to have been discharging for about 1.5 hrs (how long it had been since I had unplugged it). I didn't have problems until I closed it after my last class. Upon opening it ten minutes ago, it was without a charge, and sure enough, it seems to have turned back on between classes. Here are two interesting excerpts from pm-suspend.log:

The Acer C720 was recently released as the latest Google Chromebook selling for just $199 USD. I have been running the Acer C720 Chromebook recently but not with Chrome OS and instead Ubuntu 13.10 Linux. This Chromebook with a Haswell-based dual-core Celeron CPU runs Ubuntu Linux rather nicely. Here are the first thorough benchmarks from this low-cost laptop.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS & Acer C720 chromebook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 7, 2014
Hello everybody, how are you?
I own an Acer C720 & recently installed Ubuntu via Chrubuntu method.
I have several problems with it. Unfortunately, I do not know what the those problems are related to. Are they just bugs needed to be worked out, are they related to Acer C720, are they just on a LTS version (meaning they do not exist on 14.04 regular version), or something else.
1) Onscreen keyboard
The software needed called "onboard" in the software centers is installed correctly. When I click the icon in the taskbar, it lights up and wiggles like it should, then it stops wiggling and dims but nothing happens on the screen.
Also, when I initially want to enter my password in my user account, I can click on the accessibility icon in the upper right-hand corner, and a virtual keyboard appears on the bottom. On mine, the space where that keyboard appears is all black with no ability to actually see keys.
2) Time disappears

Acer C720 Chromebook Just added Ubuntu, but no wireless option
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 2, 2015
Hi,
I just installed Ubuntu on my chromebook, but I can't get the wifi turned on. It's not even an option from the network drop down (enable/VPN are the only ones available). I followed the help guide, and it does see my card, but there is no info listed about wireless/wifi. I tried to see if I could update the drivers, but the help guide really was no help (you go in circles trying to get to the device drivers area, even from the direct links in the guide.)
Since it's a chromebook, there is no ethernet port. I know the wireless card works (I'm on it right now with the ChromeOS.)
I've tried the other tips in the c720 posts in this forum, but I'm getting no love.
This is the first time I've used Ubuntu, so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! But please be patient with me. Thank you!
Touchpad not working on Acer C720 Chromebook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 26, 2013
The Acer C720 Chromebook runs really well with Ubuntu (installed with Chrubuntu) dual-booting with ChromeOS. The only problem is that there is no support for the touchpad in the default Ubuntu kernels.
When installing Ubuntu 13.10 or newer the Chrubuntu script automatically downloads and compiles in some kernel patches from Chromium developer Benson Leung (https://plus.google.com/+BensonLeung/posts/EJUSUudzHb3). Unfortunately this automatic process doesn't work for the 12.04 LTS:

Building the kernel modules (once-off for each kernel version)
- Install Ubuntu 13.10 or later in a VM
- On VM: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- On VM: reboot so most recent kernel is running
- On VM: Run cros-haswell-modules.sh, which is part of the Chrubuntu installation scripts (https://googledrive.com/host/0B0YvUu...ell-modules.sh)
- On VM:
Code:
mkdir ~/Download/chrome-kernel; cd ~/Download/chrome-kernel
apt-get download linux-headers-`uname -r` li

Acer C720 Chromebook
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 7, 2014
Hey guys, I've just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my Chromebook, I've got the brightness, volume keys and bluetooth working, unlike my C710 which had some issues but other than that it worked. Now the issue I'm having with the C720 is that it won't connect to any open WiFi network if it requires a login page or my Galaxy S4 hotspot, it just keeps saying DNS Lookup Failed. I can connect to my home WiFi with no problems. My other devices and the Chrome OS portion of the C720 can connect to any open network and my Galaxy S4 hotspot with no issues. Any ideas on how I can remedy this?
Acer C720 Chromebook Installing Linux
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 18, 2014
I am new to the forum so not to sure if this is the write place for this thread.
Recently I purchased a Acer C720 Chromebook for college work. It is a great laptop and does pretty much everything that I want i to. However since I am studying computing, Java programming makes up a considerable part of the course. I found this guide online on how to install Linux Ubuntu on the chromebook and it seems fairly easy to do so. However reading this guide it says I need to remove the write protect screw in the laptop. Do I need to remove the write protect screw in order to install Linux?. Also will installing Linux void the manufactures warranty?.
please wait...
