Tutorial: eFaxgtk setup using hsfmodem (Conexant) and open office.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 22, 2008
Hi,
I send quite a few faxes to clients. As a linux noob, I had quite a bit of trouble setting up a working fax. I spent hours setting it up resulting in quite a bit of frustration. Well, I figured it out! I thought I would help others who are in the same boat.
Now I will explain what I learned:
Programs you need:
cups
openoffice
modem drivers
eFax-gtk eFax with a decent GUI.
lshw
Steps:
1. You will need to find out what kind of modem you have. There are a few ways to do that. Look at the paperwork you received when you bought the computer. There should be a list of hardware, provided you did not throw it away. In command line, depending on your hardware setup, the following commands should help, lspci, lshw lsusb, dmesg.
Once you know what hardware you have you will need the linux drivers for it. Now I can only speak for myself in this area. I have a Dell 5150 laptop with a Conxant modem. Well for the longest time you would have to pay $20.00 for the driver from linuxant. Lucky
Open Office Web Page Creator Questions and Looking for Tutorial.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 4, 2010
Hi, I have been trying the Open Office web page creator. In Presentation under options, wizard, the web.
Two questions come to mind. How can I get an older document into the page for test viewing? Does the document have to be a certain kind? When I put one in, it looks like a link and will not open, I want it to be there in full straight off.
And creating an email, can it be the new one the host will maintain for me as I pay?
User name and passwords, are an agreement between myself and the host company?
Upload by FTP, I must get the FTP address first from the host?
Is there a tutorial here or elsewhere for Open Office Presentation?

Or if needed it is fairly easy to get back to the 'classic' gnome desktop as opposed to Unity.
You can just run this in a terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
Reboot and then select "Gnome Classic" on the login screen.
For a detailed walkthrough, check the page here.
Also note: In order to make changes to the panel settings, you have to use alt+right click, instead of just a regular right click.
multiple Xservers, multiple graphics adapters, singleseat (kind of tutorial)

well ... uhm ... the question I wanted to ask here developed to a kind of tutorial, as I was able to find solutions to most of my problems myself, step for step.
First, my setup: running Debian Squeeze on a machine with two Nvidia-brand graphics adapters, one "big" PCI-E card, and one "small" onboard graphics, both are dual-head-capable.
I have two displays connected to the "big" card, running like a charm with "nvidia" proprietary driver, using nvidia twinview, including 3D acceleration and composite effects. This is my main setup for work, so I will call it "main" from now on.
I got my hands on an old low-res display, so I decided to plug it into the "small" onboard graphics. This gave my quite a lot of headache, so I will call it "child" from now on.
Using "nvidia-settings", I learned that I have three possibilities:
1) enable "xinerama" and have one large desktop spread over all t
Installing Microsoft Office 2007 in Ubuntu 8.04/8.10/9.04 using Wine 1.1.12 to 16
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 29, 2009
UPDATED POST: (August 18, 2009)
Since the day of the release of Wine version 1.1.24 the regression issue was resolved and probably future versions (1.1.24+) will do the same.
The guide is just a summary of all the online guides that I have tried and to be honest many of those guides gave me so many headaches for the simple reason, "I'm a newbie to UBUNTU". So I've decided to join in this forum last May 2009 and made a simple guide that's especially made for newbies like me.
Thanks to all the online guides that helped me formulate this simple guide all the credits must be given to all of you..
HERE ARE THE STEPS:
A. WINE CHECK/VERSION CHECK-to check if you have installed wine already or check the version of your wine
Click Application>Accessories>Terminal On the Terminal window type ‘wine --version’ Note:
If you have not installed wine yet you will receive this message The program 'wine' is currently not installed. You can install it by t
MIcrosoft Office 2003 V StarOffice 8 V OpenOffice 2.0.2
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 11, 2006
I would like to get everyone's opinions on this if I may.......
I own Microsoft Office 2003, and have downloaded StarOffice 8 and OpenOffice 2.0.2
So I have the latest versions of each (to make it fair)
My own personal opinion is that MS Office 2003 is the best. This is simply due to the fact that .doc and .xls are pretty much insustry standard document formats, and that if you have to send a file to someone, or share a file with others (a group of people passing around the same file after editing it for example), its pretty much a given that they want it sent to them in .doc or .xls format. Although StarOffice/OpenOffice "officially" support these formats, the tests that I have performed on opening my own .doc and .xls files with them required me to fix a LOT of little errors, which is just not practical to do all the time.
However, for personal letter writing/essays/anything that doesnt require you to use the microsoft document formats, then StarOffice and OpenOffice a

Tutorial: Skulltag (Doom/Heretic/Hexen) on Ubuntu
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 19, 2010
I just wrote this for the Skulltag forums. If you don't know what Skulltag is, it's Doom, enhanced, online. It's quite amazing.
Check it out here.
Here's the tutorial:
A quick author's note:
There was originally a large note here. I removed it as it is no longer necessary.
I would, however, appreciate constructive criticism as this is my first real contribution to the Skulltag community, and I'd like to be a good one.
Thanks, from frenc.
Skulltag-on-Ubuntu
An introduction:
In this tutorial we'll cover how to install the latest versions of Skulltag and Doomseeker on to your Ubuntu computer, where to place your IWADs (if you don't know what an IWAD is, don't panic just yet) and how to configure Doomseeker's directories, meaning you start playing straight away. This tutorial was created using and was designed for Ubuntu 9.10. If you're using an older version, menus may appear different (or programs that are shown throughout the tutorial may not even exist) and I recommend you upg
