Is it possible to run a Linux OS WITH PROGRAMS from a flash drive
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 13, 2015
I am used to the Debian distro of Linux and am an 'average' user. My college, however, prefers Ubuntu and asks everyone to use Ubuntu. So, I'm installing Ubuntu on my Laptop. My question is that, can we use Debian along with a few portable programs like Notepad++ from a flash drive?
Using OProfile with Linux RedHat OS => conflict with NMI watchdog
location: linuxexchange.com - date: November 29, 2011
I was trying to run o-profile (a profiling program for linux) and kept getting an error while starting saying something like counter 0 was being use by 'NMI watchdog'. Is NMI part of the OS or is it a separate package that was downloaded? How would I go about uninstalling it?
I tried this on another Linux machine with the same OS and specs and O-Profile ran with no errors.

Help with Linux Zorin OS 8.1 Core, 64 bit.
location: linux.com - date: June 22, 2014
I am trying to get Zorin to boot from the DVD. I have downloaded the 64 bit version. From two different sites. One I thought I burned to a DVD. As well as the other download. Neither of them would boot. So I downloaded one more time from Linux. I made two more copies and again neither DVD will boot. Once I get to the F12 boot window. I go to the DVD line and hit enter. The screen goes black, and then loads windows 7.
I am trying to open as many of the Distro's that I can, on Live CD. To check them out. I intend to install one at least on a separated stand alone hard drive. And not using the C drive. As this computer allows one to plug in two additional hard drives. I have gotten Mint to boot after trying a few times, as it did the same thing when I first tried to boot it.
Can anybody direct me in obtaining a good download. Downloading it and burning it to a CD. And having it boot properly. Thanks you.

Making the switch to become more familiar with linux, any suggestions?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 6, 2009
I've been meaning to switch from windows to linux for some time and have just never gotten around to it. After a recent system-crashing virus, I decided that it was now time to undertake this project and move away from windows for good.
Aside from just not wanting to deal with windows anymore, my main motivation for switching to linux is to be more in control of my system and to achieve a much better knowledge of operating systems and computers in general.
My question is, with this desire in mind, where would be a good starting point and/or which distro would be recommended? I have recently been looking into gentoo because of its high level of customization and the fact that it essentially forces you to know linux inside and out. I consider myself to be quite competent when it comes to dealing with computers and have a lot of prior exposure to using linux, mostly through using it in all my CSCI classes (we use fedora). However, I don't really have any knowledge of the
Best OS based Linux Distrobution for a AMD K6 (200 MHz) with 64 MB RAM
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 12, 2014
Hello Linux Users,
I have a old AMD K6-200 with 64 MB ram. It has a SoundBlaster 16 on it, and a Ultra66 PCI secondary IDE controller. The system features 3 PCI and 4 ISA slots. I am using a DIAMOND Stealth VRAM graphics controller (ISA) with 1 MB intergraded memory. The system will boot a CD but I do not think that it will boot a DVD. If it does that would surprise me. What do you all recommend that I put on this old girl? I would like to file share between it and Windows 2000, and possibly my newest PC which is running Windows 8.1 Pro. It needs to be preferably up-to-date, but not too slacky. If it has to be text based I suppose that would be fine. I am kinda new to Linux so I will have to do a little bit of studying.
Eclipse crashes with “Unable to create new native thread” any ideas? (my settings and info inside)
location: linuxexchange.com - date: July 20, 2011
I'm having trouble with Eclipse routinely crapping out on me (and being generally sluggish) and I was wondering if anyone could give me any insight. The message that gets thrown is "Unable to create new native thread." at which point I'm prompted to restart Eclipse. This happens 5 or so times a day.
I'm using Ecliipse Helios Service Release 2 (with Flash Builder plugin) on:
Windows Vista Business
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.20 GHz
Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System

Can Android OS be replaced with a different OS on my Samsung Galaxy tablet?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 21, 2015
I have another newbie question. I just started using my new Android Samsung Galaxy Tablet Pro tablet in earnest for the first time. My question is this: Can another Operating System be installed onto tablet PC's that are more free'er with less proprietary guts and firmware blobs than what Android has? Android seems like it has an awful lot of proprietary software built up around it and built into it. Also, the "apps" that it accepts seem like most are proprietary too, especially the majority of the ones that you have to pay for. Proprietary software allows too much malicious software to be become one with the tablet as a whole (back doors, snooping and spying on the user, etc. etc...). If so, how does one uninstall Android and install some Operating System that is more freedom respecting? Or at the very least, uninstall Android and be able to do a clean, fresh re-installation when it becomes so gummed up with this junk and garbage that it bogs down and refuses
