newbie wanting easy windows workgroup file share / master browser
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 16, 2011
Need to get a server to replace aging windows workstation file-share box.
What server OS is best bet for someone new to Linux (if any!)?
Does Calculate Directory Server support MS workgroup (docs say 'designed to be windows domain manager')?
Perhaps Ubuntu, with paid support , would be a better bet?
What of the suggestions of TheRegister:
ClearOS and SME Server - any votes for these to support an MS workgroup?
And, should 2 sites of 17 laptop users (total), mostly split equally between sites, remain in 2 workgroups, or are there neat ways, on minimal bandwidth, to enable them to join a domain depending upon which site they are visiting?
Unable to access Windows 7 share from Ubuntu 11.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 9, 2011
I've read several threads on the subject but all seem to be related to problems I'm not having, or at least the troubleshooting loses me at some point where my results have differed too many times to ignore.
So, I'd like to start from scratch if anyone can help me. I'm simply trying to access a folder shared on Windows 7. The Windows computers on the network have no trouble accessing it with the username and password -- both XP and Win7 systems are able to access the share.
I can try going to Places > Network > Windows Network -- but I get "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server"
I can try going to Places > Connect to Server -- but I get "Cannot display location "smb://192.168.1.8/". Failed to retrieve share list from server." (tried both computer name and local IP)
I currently have Windows Firewall turned off on the server for troubleshooting purposes.
I'm pretty new to Linux still -- are there any commands
Connect to Windows 7 share from Ubuntu 10.10
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 13, 2010
How does one connect to a Windows 7 share from Ubuntu 10.10? I switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 10.10 while my wife still uses Windows 7. I'm trying to connect to a share on her computer from mine. I've done the steps shown here: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/09/...erick-meerkat/.
Tried with password protected sharing, tried it without, with a password on her account, without. Nothing works. Every time it tries to connect the dialog box with "Password required for share" shows up (even when password protection is turned off!) and all combinations of using a password or not do not work, the dialog box just keeps popping up.
Does anyone have a working solution on how to connect to a Windows 7 machine from Ubuntu 10.10?
How to securely share files over the internet from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to Windows 7?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 5, 2013
Hello everybody,
I'm really lost, I thought it would be really easy to be able to safely share files that are stored on my server over the internet, so that I can access them from anywhere. But it turns out it's almost impossible! I've tried OpenVPN multiple times, Openswan and even ownCloud, but I couldn't get them to work (except for ownCloud, but I disliked it). Am I missing something? Do any of you know an easy way to share files securely over the internet?
This is what I want:
- To be able to access my files through Windows Explorer (i.e. be able to map the shared folder as a network drive in Windows)
- To be able to open the files directly, without having to download them first (as is the case with a FTP-server), so I can stream my music files
- An encrypted connection, so noboby can intercept the data I am sending to and receiving from the server
This is what I have:
- A fast internet connection (100mbit)
- A Ubuntu 12.04LTS Server
- Two laptops running Windows 7 - t

Ubuntu limits my download speed
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 12, 2011
ok im relatively new to ubuntu and i realised that although before when i had windows7 my relative download speed was around 5.0 MB/s ( i have a 50MB virgin connection)now with ubuntu 10.10 im limited to only 2.8MB/s or somewhere around there.
First i tested my wireless speed on another laptop (with windows 7) on the same network and the speed was as i said around 5.0MB/s sometimes even more. So i thought it was only chrome that i was using at that point. However, this download speed limitation appears in jdownloader as well as in firefox and i guess the whole system.
SO im wondering if there is any way to set up the speed limit on the system and if there is, how should do i go ahead with this change, through the terminal or through preferences?
thanks

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 7, 2011
Hi all,
I have few question regarding how to download youtube video on my

1. I use this step : $ sudo apt-get remove youtube-dl

$ sudo wget https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/ra...25c/youtube-dl
-O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
Then, i type this command :
$ youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OE4fkorNlk
[youtube] Setting language
[youtube] 8OE4fkorNlk: Downloading video info webpage
[youtube] 8OE4fkorNlk: Extracting video information
[youtube] 8OE4fkorNlk: URL:
http://www.youtube.com/get_video?vid...lt&gl=US&hl=en
ERROR: format not available for video
And it's still not working.
Question :
(?) Why it does not work ?
(?) How to use Python in youtube-dl ?
(?) Why the format not available for video?
Thanks.
Cheers,
Anton
