Sid vs Aptosid
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 8, 2011
I like current software, and after reading this I decided to give "unstable" a go. Only thing is, I'm not sure which of the two should I choose, and why.
I understand a degree of tinkering is necessary when running experimental software, but I'd still like to get the distro that'll give me less headaches.

A full review of aptosid 2010-02. I recently reviewed Linux Mint Debian, a very user-friendly version of Linux Mint based on Debian. This time I looked at another distro based on Debian, called aptosid. Aptosid, for those who arenít familiar with it, is actually made by the same developers that created the popular distro Sidux. There was apparently some conflict and controversy within the Sidux e.V association that resulted in Sidux morphing into Aptosid.
dns and aptosid
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 6, 2012
I am trying to install aptosid. First I want to run it from the dvd.
It runs pppoeconf to connect to the internet, and brings up the connection. I can see an ip with ifconfig.
But: the browser can't connect, nor can dkpg. Someone said this may be a dns problem
pppoeconf does prompt for a DNS, but says most providers will automatically assign a dns. So I go for automatic.
Question: in what file should I tell aptosid which dns to use? Where is that info stored in Debian??
aptosid, kde and dsl
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 4, 2012
I was thinking of trying aptosid. I have a dvd. I can boot from it if I give the parameter radeon.modeset=0
Of course, it would be nice to have internet. I cannot connect using aptosid. I ran ppp.conf, it says I am connected, and ifconfig ppp0 shows an ip. But no browser can connect, dkpg frontend cannot connect. Is this a permissions thing? I can ping eg my inet address.
I am used to gnome Network Manager, put in username and password in the dsl tab, done.
How do I do this in aptosid/kde? ceni has no tab dsl>username>password.

aptosid might sound like a package management tool, but it's actually a desktop-orientated (KDE4 or XFCE) Debian derived Linux distro. It's more than a mere respin of Debian, but does it have what it takes to distinguish it from all of the other desktop distros?
What is Aptosid ?

I'm a dedicated debian linux user and recently I've heared about this Aptosid project. In few words how could this be described and how is it better than Sidux ?
Use aptosid's configuration to install Ubuntu?

I have an old Dell Dimension 4100 running at 900 mhz or a bit higher with 512 MBs of RAM I am having a miserable time getting a working modern install of Linux with Gnome running on. I had it set up with Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10) at one point where upon it was put in the closet after my parent's internet plans were put on hold. I now have the unenviable task of trying to get something slightly more modern running on it in preparation for their long delayed internet installation.
I tried doing an upgrade (but apparently the recommended path is to install as upgrades every release until you manage to get current. Not. Gonna. Happen.) Then I installed a command only installation of Lucid and proceeded to install xorg, etc. Hello frozen KMS! Part of the problem seems to be this desktop has an ancient ATI onboard card and a more recent nvidia PCI video card I used with success in Gutsy and which the bios is supposed to detect the presence of and automatically disable the onboard ATI in f
