Reset password without installation CD
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 22, 2011
Is it possible to reset my root password without installation CD?I have been read some that it is possible by edit LILO, but i'm just not sure yet how to do that...by click TAB first on LILO?and what parameter should i append on?
Now i don't with my Slackware CD for in the next few days. Typos makes me lost root and my daily login simultaneously. If i reboot, i'll never login to my laptop-because there are only root and my login
So it's like i have just one shot to make it back to normal. Thanks

how to reset password windows 7 starter...
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 21, 2015
My fiancé recently locked her self out of her windows 7 HP mini laptop and I cant figure out a solution to this for the life of me. Im running Backbox Linux on my mac, and I cant seem to even be able to make a password reset USB for her. And since her laptop is a mini, it has no CD drive or I would just do a clean install as she has no important files on it. Can anyone assist with this?
KeePassX how to reset default (Master Key) password
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 19, 2012
Well, i lost the KeePassX default password.
* I don't need to retrieve it *, there were just some pass inside i dont need...
But i can not reset. I Need it working or Ubuntu One and other programs gives an error if i cancel the KeePassX when it prompts me for the default pass.
I tryed sudo apt-get --purge remove keepassx
(the purge should remove all configurations, right? WRONG, it does not. Is this a bug? We uninstall something with --purge remove and it leaves garbage on the system???)
Not even with --purge remove, i install it again and it asks for the same master key default password.
I tryed to google and to look in keepassx homepage and didnt see nothing that helps me.
So PLEASE someone gimme a hand. I can't use ubuntu software central sincronization nor ubuntu one and other stuff gives me error if i cancel the key password window.
reset XP password(s) for Samba
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 3, 2005
Everytime I add a new share to Samba, for different users on my Linux box, i have to enter the username and password each time, that's not so much a problem, but XP seems a bit eratic (what a suprise huh?)
When I add a new share and try to connect (just by viewing Workgroup computers) it asks for username/password, but then if i try to access a different share it says i'm already connected under a different username, even tho I don't have that window open anymore.
Is there any way round this? Any setting in XP (SP2) that I should know about?
I really wanna keep all these shares seperate and under different users (it's each users' home directories for different projects i work on), I don't think mapping drives will work, but how about adding network places, or just browsing the Workgroup?
If it means entering username/password each time to access a particular share that's fine - although i would say it would be great if i could map one drive at the same time (to access my M

reset mysql root password on ubuntu
location: linuxexchange.com - date: June 16, 2013
In short: my goal is to reset mysql root password on ubuntu.
Background: I set up a ubuntu desktop and installed LAMP stack last week. I then went to do something else, and just got back to carry on today. Either I did not set mysql password, or I have forgotten what I typed in.
So I tried to reset it.
I stopped mysql by
sudo stop mysql
I tried to start mysql using command line options, but it seems start only takes service name(??)
So I ran:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start --skip-network --skip-grant-tables
Went into mysql, fine. Then
mysql> UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('newpasswd') WHERE User='root';
ERROR 1142 (42000): UPDATE command denied to user ''@'localhost' for table 'user'
mysql> show grants for ''@'localhost';
| Grants for @localhost |
| GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO ''@'localhost' |

How do I reset the admin password in my BIOS?
location: linuxexchange.com - date: September 27, 2011
I bought some Windows desktops at an auction, and now I'm trying to install Ubuntu and remove Windows. I've been able to do it on some of them but on others, when I try to change the boot sequence in BIOS, I'm asked for an admin password.
There's no way I can get it from the previous owner. Any ideas how I can overcome this?
I've tried removing the CMOS battery and replacing it after 30 minutes. That didn't work.
