[SOLVED] on dualboot no option to boot linux, just straight to windows 8.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 13, 2014
On a new laptop with windows 8.1 I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon. Now when I boot the system, no option to boot Linux comes up, it just goes straight to windows.
When I boot with the linux cd and try to install again, the install options says "you have multiple operating systems installed" and not "you have windows 8 installed" like in this screen shot
So I guess linux is installed.
But when I check windows > config > system > advanced > settings > startup > edit windows 8 can only see 1 OS (itself).
I had a problem with the driver for nvdia graphics, so I installed in compatibility mode. As described here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=122257. Not sure that has anything to do with it.
After hours of googling I found this page:

No X at boot when no network available? (Fedora 16)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 29, 2013
I'd appreciate help troubleshooting a problem I'm experiencing with F16 (or Fedora 16).
When the network is available, the system boots up to the gnome login screen (to choose a username to log in with).
When the network is not available, the system will be apparently idle for a while after the same old message (that I get on every boot, network or no):
Failed to start LSB: Builds and install new kmods from akmod packages [FAILED]
See 'systemctl status akmods.service' for details.
After several seconds (I want to say >30), the screens will seem to show X starting up (and I get that pointlessly annoying "AMD Unsupported Hardware" in the lower right corner), but instead of the window offering me which user to log in as, it goes black and comes back a few times before it finally goes back to the terminal-style view with the new messages of:
Starting SYSV: Grant or revoke access to X for the ATI Exte... Events Daemon...
Started SYSV: Grant or revoke access to

I have to say that I’m a newbie in Linux, So I started by submitting a question to www.dlink.eu in order to learn about the appropriate driver to install, and although I have not received a response yet, I read in some sources on the internet that the rt5370sta driver is
Aptget problem? Software Center Problem? No Package: header?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 12, 2014
So I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my Gateway DX4850 (i7 CPU, 8 gig RAM, dual boot with Win7, 64-bit) and went to download softwware and some plugins. When I try to go to the software center, a screen flashes and nothing happens. I don't even get to the software center. When I try apt-get for plugins, I get an error as well. Given the error codes (see below, first is the error from trying to get to the software center, the second is from trying apt-get). Same error when trying apt-get update and other apt-get commands. Any ideas?
