Ubuntu Server 10.04 samba install & configuration help
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 28, 2011
I am somewhat newbie to ubuntu( I have had experience with ubuntu desktop). I have installed samba, and have zentyal(ebox) installed. I can configure the server remotely via the web browser using zentyal. I want to configure samba for my windows 7 network. I have 3 windows 7 desktops, 1 XP laptop, and 1 win7 laptop.
I have the latest samba version installed so I know it will work with win7 computers.
I can see the server on the windows network, but there are no folders. I think all I need to do is create shareable folders on the server to access on the windows clients.

Ubuntu Server 10.10 vs 10.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 15, 2010
I need to create at least one Ubuntu server, and possibly more in the future. What I'm wondering is if I should create it using 10.10 when it comes out or use 10.04 since it has LTS. Are there any new feature in 10.10 that could be worth taking advantage of for a server? The first server will be used for an SFTP server.
How to securely share files over the internet from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to Windows 7?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 5, 2013
I'm really lost, I thought it would be really easy to be able to safely share files that are stored on my server over the internet, so that I can access them from anywhere. But it turns out it's almost impossible! I've tried OpenVPN multiple times, Openswan and even ownCloud, but I couldn't get them to work (except for ownCloud, but I disliked it). Am I missing something? Do any of you know an easy way to share files securely over the internet?
This is what I want:
- To be able to access my files through Windows Explorer (i.e. be able to map the shared folder as a network drive in Windows)
- To be able to open the files directly, without having to download them first (as is the case with a FTP-server), so I can stream my music files
- An encrypted connection, so noboby can intercept the data I am sending to and receiving from the server
This is what I have:
- A fast internet connection (100mbit)
- A Ubuntu 12.04LTS Server
- Two laptops running Windows 7 - t
Ubuntu Server guest (HyperV) blank screen/initramfs problems
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 20, 2012
Hi all. I've asked help about this in the Hyper-V forums but I thought I'd ask here too for insights, as we couldn't come up with a solution.
I'm trying to set up an Ubuntu server guest on an MS Server 2012 Hyper-V host. I've tried both 12.10 and 12.04 but I've faced various issues with both releases. The host machine is a completely fresh installation. The guest machine is also a completely fresh installation of ubuntu server (no gui) with openssh server and LAMP. Nothing else, the only configuration is of a static IP address.
The first issue is the guest getting stuck during installation with either a blinking cursor or a completely blank screen. There seems to be some cpu usage, fluctuating between 0-30%, but no change even after an hour. This is rare but it happened with both 12.10 and 12.04. Rebooting the guest and restarting installation solved the problem.
The second issue is a blank screen on boot. Grub flashes for half a second and then the guest's screen goes blank.
Windows 7, BackTrack 4 and Ubuntu Server
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 10, 2010
Hi all, I'm new here as you many have guessed.
I'm also completely new to the (.*)nix environment, but I would consider myself an advanced user of Windows. I know some of the commands used due to my knowledge of PHP.
I would like help tri-booting Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, BackTrack 4 and Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit. Windows 7 is the main OS involved, which is on a HDD with about 800GB free space, so space isn't a problem. I have BT4 and Ubuntu ISOs downloaded and on DVDs ready to install.
Do I create partitions first in Windows or do I let the installer do it? What sizes would you recommend? What size for the swap partition?
What order should I install the two OS'? I already tried installing both of them, (Ubuntu first then BT4) but BT4 did not show up in grub when booting, even after updating grub through Ubuntu. I also think I make a mistake when installing Ubuntu as I didn't install any packages. I would like to use the gnome desktop environment on Ubuntu but every time

Ubuntu server problem (says samba's not installed but it is)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 10, 2012
I just installed Ubuntu server 12.04 on my pentium 4 computer, the install went great and I only choose to install samba from the list of software. When I try the samba -v command it says that samba is not installed, but if I try to edit the conf file using vi /etc/samba/smb.conf it works and the file comes up. ubuntu says I still have to install samba4 even though a version is already installed on the system. Why is this ? is this a bug? or is ubuntu dumb and can't see where my samba is installed
I found a file called samba in the /etc/ folder but I guess it's not the program. why would the smb.conf file be there is samba was not installed???
I tried to install samba4 as ubuntu said by using apt-get install samba4 . I got all kinds of errors.
I am signed in as root user.

Using Debian Lenny DVDs packages in Ubuntu Server 10.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 11, 2011
Hi guys! Help me, can i use all packages in Debian 5 Lenny DVDs (1-6) without any problem in my Ubuntu Server 10.04? For example using apt-cdrom and apt-update, apt-install xxxx ?. Would't affect these actions for potential errors?
Thank in advance.
