Black screen after installing Nvidia binary driver on Ubuntu 12.04.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 6, 2013
As stated in the title, I get a black screen after installing the Nvidia binary driver from 'Additional Drivers' under System Settings. The Nouveau driver also crashes on starting the Unity desktop from a LiveUSB (unless booted with the 'nomodeset' option). The card in question (a GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB) works just fine on Windows XP Pro, so I know it's not a faulty card.
When I reboot after installing the Nvidia binary driver, and am presented with the black/blank screen, I can't even get to a command prompt via CTRL+ALT+F1. I can only get to it by holding down shift at boot to bring up the Grub menu, then selecting recovery mode, then selecting continue with normal boot. This allows me to get to the command prompt via CTRL+ALT+F1, but trying to kill and restart the LightDM service via;
sudo service lightdm stop && sudo service lightdm start
just brings me to a black/blank screen again - albeit one I can actual
Black screen after installing software updates in Ubuntu 14.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 4, 2015
I have a Toshiba Satellite L 50-A-1FD laptop, with Nvidia Gforce 740M graphics. I have a dual boot installation with Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 and was running on the advised 346.57 series Nvidia driver. After installing regular software updates on 1st May 2015, the computer boots to a dull purple screen, with about two cycles of the dots under the Ubuntu logo, and then goes to a black screen. I have tried to boot up with nomodeset, following advice from various sources. After booting with nomodeset, I get to my desktop login screen (though with a series of small white dots over the login screen - normally login is set to automatic without password), and my password is asked for, but not accepted. I have entered the password many times, and know that it is correct. I cannot get beyond this stage. What is the way of getting logged in and resolving the black screen issue. I have checked that the Keyboard setting is as before (UK English).
ubuntu 13.10 black screen after installing nvidia optimus drivers, GeForce GTX 765M
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 6, 2014
I have a 3XS Graphite LG155 laptop from Scan, which has integrated intel graphics along with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M graphics card.
Initially when installing Ubuntu 13.10 desktop 64-bit the setup was freezing but I managed to install OK by setting the nomodeset boot option at the start of the install).
My laptop is using the the integrated graphics now with the following driver: -
Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 256 bits)
I'm running Kernel 3.11.0-12-generic and Gnome 3.8.
I've attempted to install the nvidia drivers doing the following: -
sudo add-apt-repository ppaorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
This seemed to install fine however after a reboot all I get is black screen, and I have to use another terminal to uninstall the drivers before I get a desktop back again.
I've also tried installing earlier nvidia drivers through apt-get but with the same issues.
Any help appreciated.
Nvidia GeForce 8400GS: Black screen after installing Nvidia proprietary drivers
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 19, 2014
Hi Ubuntu community!
I tried to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers through the >Additional Drivers graphic interface in Lubuntu 14.04. The install finished (To note: I was not prompted to restart my system) and I closed out of it. Everything seemed okay until I restarted my system. Once I restarted I get past the splash screen for my computer manufacturer (HP) and I get past the flashing underscore, but then I get a black screen and nothing happens.
My system specs are:
Intel Pentium 4Nvidia GeForce 8400GS (PCI version if that matters)2GB DDR2 RAM
If you need any more information please let me know. Thank you in advance for any help!

BLACK Screen after installing Nvidia drivers
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 18, 2011
Hi, im using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have a lot of stuff on there, from class and so on.
Im quite new to Ubuntu. I wanted to play some games. I noticed a really poor performance on 3D games, and I realized the nVidia card was not being used because the driver was not installed. I have a GT540M on my laptop. So I went to System->Administration->Additional Drivers and the nVidia driver was found as missing and ready to install, so I clicked and waited for it to install. When it was done I closed the window and restarted. When I tried to boot up, I only got a black screen with "Ubuntu Login", I logged in, tried that "sudo gdm service restart" cvar and still no GUI. Then I decided to uninstall the nVidia drivers with sudo apt-get purge nvidia and then sudo reboot. This time I didn't even had the "Ubuntu Login" thing, it was jut black. To access the Ubuntu Login again I had to press F6 while I see the Ubuntu loading logo for a couple of seconds before it go
I geek getting a black screen after installing Nvidia Drivers!
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 27, 2007
Ok, so I am relatively new to linux... I have been using it off and on for the past 2 years and I have never before had this kind of problem.
First off I'll give you my hardware specs
AMD dual core 5200 socket 939
BFG Geforce 7950GT OC
I think those are the only things that could be causing the problem, if not let me know and I'll post them
So in the past I've been able to install fedora, ubuntu and without a problem and get the nvidia drivers installed. They worked fine in Feisty version of ubuntu but I decided to wait until Gusty came out to make a real switch over to linux. I can boot and install gusty fine, but when I enable restricted drivers all I get is a black screen. I thought this might just be something wrong with gusty, so I tried Suse, same problem. and finally I got Mandriva 2008 and that wont even let me get to the login screen.
It sucks because right when Im ready to make a big switch over to linux I run into this problem. If anybody can tell me what they
Installing NVIDIA drivers on Ubuntu 12.04 AWS EC2 instance for Tesla M2050
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 4, 2013
I hope someone can help me with this. I have searched numerous forums and spent several days trying to solve this and still haven't been able to find a solution.
I am trying to install the NVIDIA drivers on an Amazon Cluster GPU instance (cg1) which has 2 x NVIDIA Tesla “Fermi” M2050 GPUs. I launched a Ubuntu Server 12.04 for Clusters instance, connected to the instance using PuTTY SSH and carried out the following steps:
1. Install the NVIDIA driver:
log in again
apt-get purge nvidia*
apt-get install nvidia-current
apt-get install nvidia-settings
2. Install ubuntu desktop and vncserver:
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install vnc4server
3. Configure the VNC xstartup file:
vncserver -kill :1

I am new to Linux and any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition on my Toshiba Qosmio G40-10E. I am struggling with the nVidia graphics card.
