My laptop with desktop GPU and... Windows
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 23, 2015
At the end of 2013 I have bought T430 laptop with i5-3320m and integrated graphic card which is not powerful enough for someone who enjoys playing computer games, including the new ones. Hence why at the beginning of this year I have assembled external graphic card setup with MSI GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II which lets me play games such as Divinity: Original Sin or Alien: Isolation on maximum details. My eGPU kit consists of four parts: the graphic card itself, adapter, ATX power supply and a case to fit it all in for convenience. Of all the adapters I chose PE4L 2.1b as it has a good opinion and was already tested by many people before. For a GPU I bought GTX 560 Ti because it's a powerful but at the same time an inexpensive card. I was limited to Nvidia because ATI doesn't support anything resembling Optimus technology which would allow me to display the output of the eGPU on the laptop's internal screen instead of an external monitor. As the power supply I got Fortron FPS350-60MDN, whi
How can I tell if my laptop can do 4k resolution? (Using Linux Mint)
location: linuxexchange.com - date: March 30, 2015
I am thinking about getting a new monitor. Short of plugging one in and seeing what happens, how can I tell if my laptop can output 4k resolution?
Is there a command I can run that will tell me this?
I thought maybe I could xrandr, but I think that only tells me what each monitor is capable of (even if the controller is capable of more.)
I also thought maybe I could look up the device from the lspci and find it on google, but I couldn't find much.
My lspci -v says:

Jolicloud: how do I stop Jolicloud from overheating my laptop?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 30, 2011
I installed Jolicloud 1.2 on my laptop at the beginning of the year, as a secondary boot besides windows, but many of the apps have a tendency to overheat my laptop. It is proving very frustrating having my laptop automatically switch itself off midway through online work or a videogame. Is there an upgrade option? Or a modification to the software that I could carry out myself? (I have very limited programming skills).

Ubuntu vs Windows 7, Laptop Fan Heat
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 18, 2010
I have windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 dual boot on my laptop. Did a fan test to see which one runs cooler. Both were run on base installations, idling with just the desktops showing. Ubuntu was set to powersave.
Ubuntu: fan turns on every 6.5 to 7.5 minutes.
Windows: fan turns on every 17 minutes.
I'd rather support Ubuntu, but if it runs hotter, fan turns on more frequent which in turn will decrease battery life, then I have to use Windows
