compare startup and memory usage on MS Windows 8 & Ubuntu 13.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 4, 2013
Is it true, that a 'quick' startup of Windows 8 x64 is it faster than Ubuntu 13.04 x64?
And what is memory usage after startup of both systems by default installation, I mean without any additional software like VS etc.?
Sorry to ask you, but I have a quite old hardware and cannot try to install by myself.
Ubuntu can't connect to Windows server shares?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 8, 2012
I'm seeing a TON of threads about connecting to windows shares not working on Ubuntu 12. Thus far some people find uppercasing the domain works for unknown reasons, but that has not worked for me. If I use the nautilus method (alt+f2 or command line) regardless of how I case the domain I'm given the same error:
Could not display "smb://[server address]/[share name lowercased]
Error: Failed to mount windows share
Please select another viewer and try again
Huh? What's a viewer? Why is it lowercasing the share name when it has a capital first letter? Why is it not able to mount the share?
If I use the File -> connect to server method I'm also met with "Failed to mount Windows share" as an error at the top of the window.
Shares are hosted on Windows 2008 r2 servers on a domain. Client is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, not bound to domain, using local account. I'm not looking to bind, just connect to the shares using a domain account. This should be a very basic th
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Windows 7, how do I get rid of Windows now?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 23, 2010
I have an Acer Aspire One netbook and Windows 7 Starter on it, and I just finished installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook remix on it through a USB - alongside Windows - and now I want to get rid of Windows 7 Starter completely because I left too little space for Ubuntu and I'd rather just have 1 OS instead of wasting space and performance on another I don't want to use.
Here's a screenshot from Gparter open on my netbook, I'm not sure how to use it or which partition to change, please help?

Busybox v.1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter" help" for a list of built in commands
/bin/bash/sh: can't acces tty: job control turned off
I can install 7.10 but it comes with flaws such a freezing when i play games or use open office.
The only thing that works fine on the laptop is Windows vista, but i really want to run my laptop with Ubuntu.

Video Issues with my laptop display when playing games
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 17, 2011
I have a HP Compaq nx9010 laptop. The video is ATI Radeon IGP 345M.
The machine has 1Gig of total memory with 128Mb being taken away for
the video memory for the machine.
I am running Ubuntu 10.4 LTS
The video on the laptop is fine when I am at a desktop, viewing a movie doing standard stuff with a resolution of 1024 X 768. When I go to play any game, the video goes crazy and has millions of horizontal lines running through it. If I change the screen resolution down in size, it does the same error but hook up an external monitor, the game plays fine and the resolution can be changed without the error.
What if anything, can I do to correct this error.

[SOLVED] Is it safe to install linux on my laptop and be able to revert to factory settings?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 10, 2013
I want to dual boot on my Sony VAIO which has Windows 8 preinstalled on it. This installation of Windows allows me to return the laptop to its factory settings using some preinstalled software from VAIO. I would like to know if installing linux mint alongside windows 8 is going to destroy the ability to return it back to factory settings if I change my mind about the dual boot.
I have an issue with the partitioning screen here too...
I have attached a picture of what I see on the partitioning screen. As you can see there are no drives listed. What can I do to partition the drive? Is it safe to proceed with the instalation.
I am very concerned because the laptop wasn't cheap.
can longer copy files to my empty USB pen drive on DSL "no space left on device"
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 17, 2009
I'm brand new to Linux. In order to save some files from a few hard drives after a major system crash, my only success has come from using Damn Small Linux bootable CD - it's great.
I have been copying files onto my USB pen drive then carting them to my laptop for backup. Randomly I now get the error: "no space left on device", even though I have deleted all of the files on the drive. This exact drive was working perfectly and now will not work at all!
Any ideas? Please be as specific as possible - I'd like to learn this interface well but I am starting from scratch here. Thanks so much.
