Routing cannot SSH to a server (Did not receive identification string)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 21, 2011
I have a very weird problem that's driving me nuts. The situation is as follows:
A company with an office in City A and an Office in City B, connected via VPN. I am sitting at A and want to ssh to a server at B. The connection is as follows:
me -> router A -> VPN Appliance A -> (internet) -> VPN Appliance B -> server
However, it's slightly different from the view of the server (there's another router):
server -> router B -> VPN appliance B -> (internet) -> VPN appliance A -> router A -> me
The server, let's call it 'virtual', can ssh to me perfectly. But when I try to ssh to virtual, nothing happens on my side - no errors, no timeout, no greeting/login, just nothing. There is a message in the server log file: "Did not receive identification string from UNKNOWN", it appears everytime I try to connect.
A solution to fix this is to add a route to the network of City A with the VPN appliance as gateway to the server 'virtu
Cannot determine filesystem type of partition
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 27, 2011
As per these instructions, I got up to the end of the "Acquiring an Ubuntu filesystem" step (where it asks you to mount the newly created Ubuntu partition) and ran into a problem: The partition won't mount, as the file system type cannot be determined because I cannot remember the file system used during installation. Is there any command that prints the file system type of GPT partitions? Thanks.
cannot access ubuntu 12.04 SAMBA share from windows 7 using hostname
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 19, 2012
I've been trying for days to get this working, and everywhere I look online it seems no one has a definitive answer, so here is the run down:
I have an external drive attached to my ubuntu 12.04 machine, "nicholas-desktop." I have the entire drive shared over the network via SAMBA. If I try to access the drive from windows 7 by using "\nicholas-desktop" it fails saying it cannot locate "nicholas-desktop." However, if I use the current IP address assigned to my machine by my router's DHCP server by typing "\192.168.2.XXX" I have no problems accessing the share. if I try to ping my ubuntu machine's hostname from windows it fails. The same happens if I try to ping my windows machine, "nicholas-laptop" from my ubuntu machine. Again, if I use either machine's assigned IP address it works fine. Can someone please help me get this working? I don't want any workarounds like setting a static IP, or DHCP reservation, I want to be able to resol

location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 16, 2013
I am new to Ubuntu. I decided to give it a test drive since I am not all the fond of Windows 8. I have a brand new system that I built and have been trying to install 12.10 (the 64bit version). There is currently no OS installed, nor have I been able to install/update device drivers as of yet.

Cannot type Backslash and Pipe symbols
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 24, 2011
Hello, I cannot type Backslash(\) and Pipe(|) symbols with my keyboard in Ubuntu 11.04 x64 Desktop which runs as guest in Windows 7 x64 VirtualBox 4.1.0.
In windows I can type backslash with the key next to left-shift and I can type pipe key using the same key while holding shift. In ubuntu however, I get < or > respectively which means that key is completely useless for me in ubuntu because I already have other keys to type these.
I'm using US keyboard layout.
I also asked this question in superuser.com but it seems there is nobody who knows the answer. http://superuser.com/questions/32690...x64-virtualbox
Ubuntu 12.04 cannot install Tor
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 3, 2012
I gave up on Ubuntu a couple of years back as I just got so frustrated trying to install stuff and went back to windows.
I have to use linux at work now and I forgot how refreshing an operating system it is. so I am really onside and hope I can get on with it this time!
last time the final straw was trying to install Tor and I gave up in the end.
My first task on installing 12.04 was to have another crack at Tor and guess what? failed at the first hurdle again!!
I tried to install from a few online guides but could not get it to work - some messages about incorrect directory and vidalia exited abnormally.
well i found this post by jim_deadlock
That tutorial is WRONG! Firstly, the Tor FAQ has always said NOT to install Tor from the repositories because the package is permanently out of date. Secondly, it is no longer necessary to install Tor, all you need to do is download the Tor browser bundle and run it, no installation is necessary.
