cannot install 12.04 as dual boot with Windows 8
- date: May 6, 2012
This is part two of my first attempt at installing 12.04 with Windows 8 on my test machine.
Last weekend I tried installing it using the "specify your own partitions" option and when I rebooted the only thing to come up was Windows 8, no grub menu.
Today I re-installed Ubuntu using the "do you want to totally re-install 12.04 as a dual boot with Windows" or something like that. When I reboot I still only get Windows 8.
I know there is some way to get into some special screen somewhere and type a special command to tell grub to reconfigure itself but I am a little foggy on that and not sure if this procedure has changed in 12.04. Right now I am typing from the 64-bit 12.04 live CD on this machine. Here is the fdisk -l output:
:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes

Ubuntu 12.04 fresh install grub rescue cannot see beyond root dir
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 21, 2013
I have installed Win7 and Ubuntu 12.04.2 on a Precision 4500 and at boot I get the grub rescue prompt.
First I tried booting from the live CD and mounting/chrooting to the installed partition and running update-grub and grub-install /dev/sda. The completed without error.
Second I booted from the live cd and installed boot-repair. It said that it completed without error. http://paste.ubuntu.com/5894328/
These two methods did not fix the problem and offered little insight.
The last hing I have tried is working from the grub rescue prompt.
I can type ls and get the partition list.
If I enter ls (hd0,msdos5)/ I do see the root of the ubuntu filesystem (/etc, /usr, /boot etc, ...)
But, when I enter ls (hd0,msdos5)/boot or ls (hd0,msdos5)/etc I see no files so I cannot proceed with inserting the normal module. I have verified that the files are there from the live cd and /boot is not on a separate partition.
Any ideas? questions?

[SOLVED] 12.04 upgrade, now cannot connect to Internet
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 7, 2012
I do not know with certainty that my problem is related to the upgrade; the only other possibility is that my mobo's Realtek ethernet hardware has gone bad.
The ethernet connection worked fine for a few days after the upgrade from 11.10, but I've read elsewhere of other users experiencing wonky wireless problems that took time to kick in after an upgrade, and there were no changes to the hardware coincident with the loss of ethernet communication.
I have already manually installed the current driver from Realtek and ensured that it is not competing with an incorrect Realtek driver (apparently this is a common explanation for the problem I've encountered).
'lspci -nn', among other things, returned:
05:00.0 Ethernet controller : Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller [10ec:8168] (rev 03)
'sudo nm-tool' resulted in:
sudo: nm-tool: command not found
'lsmod | grep r8' returned:

help: cannot boot 64bit ubuntu 12.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 31, 2012
I decided it was time to update (not upgrade) my ubuntu (single boot) computer from 64-bit v10.04 to 64-bit v12.04. Unfortunately, for some reason (or reasons) I just can't make it work.
I am attempting a fresh single-boot install of 64-bit v12.04 onto a new 3TB disk drive (seagate SATA3 @ 7200rpm). My current 64-bit ubuntu v10.04 installation is on a similar but somewhat older 1TB disk drive (seagate SATA3 @ 7200rpm). To perform the attempted install of v12.04 I unplug the SATA cable from the 1TB drive and plug it into the 3TB drive. This assures I do not damage to my working v10.04 installation.
I downloaded the ubuntu 64-bit v12.04 install DVD ISO file (~1.6 GB) from the ubuntu releases webpage and burned it onto a DVD. I have downloaded 3 other DVD ISO files and tried them too with identical results (ubuntu DVD, ubuntustudio DVD, ubuntu CD). I run the "check disk" on the DVDs at the beginning of the installation process to assure the DVDs are valid.
[SOLVED] snort 18.104.22.168 cannot decode data link type 113
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 25, 2013
I am trying to upgrade my snort but I am getting an FATAL ERROR: Cannot decode data link type 113 message on start-up.
Does anybody have a clue what this message is talking about and how can I satisfy what is needed for snort to be able to decode this type of data link?
I found some info about this link type and it is a LINKTYPE_LINUX_SLL 113 DLT_LINUX_SLL.
I am running snort on my Slackware 14_64 desktop and it must be some new thing in snort because the version (on Slackbuilds) 22.214.171.124 runs ok. Actually there are more releases since 126.96.36.199 but its somewhere between these versions. Any wild guess is welcomed
