Cannot Determine Codename!
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 13, 2012
Debian 6.0.4 AMD64, halfway through installation and it says: couldn't determine Codename and the install step fails (multiple times) Does Codename really matter that much to the point where it can't install the system? Why Can't I manually type it in?
Cannot determine filesystem type of partition
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 27, 2011
As per these instructions, I got up to the end of the "Acquiring an Ubuntu filesystem" step (where it asks you to mount the newly created Ubuntu partition) and ran into a problem: The partition won't mount, as the file system type cannot be determined because I cannot remember the file system used during installation. Is there any command that prints the file system type of GPT partitions? Thanks.

Failed to determine codename for release
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 5, 2009
I've found an issue in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=427943 but as i'm new to this forum i don't understand how to reply to it
Anyway i hope this helps someone.
I tried installing Ubunut 8.10 from Alternate CD.
After RAID setup i got debootstrap error: Failed to determine codename for release
So, the solution to this was to open another terminal (F2) and re-mount cdrom, as it's device name has been changed.
(see what's device name for current /cdrom)
(i had /dev/scd0 mounted on /cdrom)
#mount /dev/scd[TAB] /cdrom
(enter your device name without number, from previous output of mount, and TAB autocompletes it with correct number)
Then just return to installer (F1), return to install options menu and choose "Rescan CDROM"

0. make sure you are in installation main menu stuck on step "mount cdrom ..."
1. go to console by ctrl-alt-f2
2. mkdir /usb
3. mount -t vfat /dev/sd? /usb
4. okay, here you can mount either the usb stick itself or the original ISO image ( you should copy it beforehand )
i found out that its best to mount original ISO: mount /usb/....iso /cdrom
5. edit /var/lib/dpkg/cdrom-detect.postinstall :
comment line with "mount | grep ...."
comment "exit 0" at the end of the next if block
change "fi" after "exit 0" to &

ERROR cannot determine address family of host.mydomain.com
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 13, 2014
Last week i was able to build several systems using the red hat satellite server.
I am suing rhel 5.9 and rhel 6.5 for the OS loads and the satellite is on 5.6 of the code. satellite server is running 5.9.
I have been doing this for a long time.
All of a sudden I went to build a system and it hung. said it could not get the packages from the server.
The ip is defined correctly. I am using fixed ip and I hard code it on the boot screen.
All looks OK but when I try to build says it cannot find the satellite server.
So I pressed alt f3 and go the following text.
cannot determine address family of host.mydomain.com
we don't have reverse DNS for IPv6 yet.
transferring http://host.mydomain.com//ks/dist.../images/stage2.img to a fd (I omitted the long path)
and it repeats.
I also tried to use the ip of the satellite server. Same results.
I tried several different network and tried to build 3 other systems all with the same results.
I have been waiting for several hours fo

"failed to determine the codename of the release" issue 8.04.2 Hardy Heron
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 18, 2009
OK after spending the last 24 hours trying to figure this error message out I found the cause and can't believe someone else didn't run into this so I'm posting it for others that may have this problem.
Installing AMD64 version of Ubuntu Server 8.04.2 (Hardy Heron) I kept getting "failed to determine the codename of the release" messages from Debootstrap while in the "installing the base system" of the setup.
The issue was that right after entering setup, at the network selection part I was changing the hostname of the machine to continue with the install. DON'T DO THIS... leave it as "ubuntu" and you will be prompted to later select the permanent hostname of the machine.
I had searched and searched and found nothing for "ubuntu 8.04.2 failed to determine the codename of the release" from Google or this forum (at least nothing that worked, my memory tested ok and the CD-ROM passed integrity check) so I hope this helps someone....
