Selected the wrong grub line when booting Ho Windows. Now all I get is as per the subject above.
I can boot with the live risk as per instructions in other threads, but non of the code suggested seems to cut any ice. It seems my data is safe & sound - but I need to open Vista so that I can back up the data
cannot get past "error: no such partition grub rescue"

Hi i am very much a linux mint12 n00b and this is my first post, i have tried to use "Click here to find Similar Threads" but it does not seem to work!
Although i am sure this has been covered before,so please bear with me
I have managed to delete the partition for Linux mint 12 hoping to re-install as the first installation did not install properly! now i cannot get past the black screen with "error: no such partition> grub rescue>_"
I don't have a WinXP disk as pc came with it already installed, i have recovery disks i made when i first got the computer and the Linux 12 live disk, and i cannot get "safe mode" as none of these can work past the above mentioned page
I presume i need to type a command on this page, to maybe get the partition back, or is that to simple?
I hope the answer is not too complicated as i have said i am very much a n00b
GRUB error: no such partition grub rescue>
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 6, 2010
I am currently using an Asus EeePc 1005HAB and had Ubuntu and XP running with Grub.
I recently ran into some trouble with XP, so I decided to go into recovery. After it rebooted from recovery, I got the error message:
error: no such partition
I have tried booting from my USB with an Ubuntu install image, I have tried the commands "set root=(hd0,0)". But nothing has worked.
I am a newbie at Ubuntu and would love for some advice on how to get out of this sticky situation!
Please, and thank you

Hi, here's what happened:
I tried to install ubuntu 11.10 yesterday on my school's netbook so i run ubuntu from a usb and started to install it. While installing i made a mistake selecting the empty partition (i found later that i was doing it right) so i got scared to uninstall windows and, without stopping the installation, i unplugged de usb and rebooted the netbook. Later, when i tried to run the netboook again and i got the message "error: no such partition. grub rescue>"
I tried solutions from other threads but no one solved the problem, thanks.
9.10 does not boot error: no such device failed to boot default entries

Karmic 9.10 does not boot after recent system update (update manager):
error: no such device : ba123456-7890-abcd-efghijklmnop
Failed to boot default entries
Press any key to continue
On pressing any key error message is repeated.
Same error occurred after the initial installation of 9.10 on various laptop models.
Note: In my case error only occurs when karmic 9.10 is installed on 250 GB Western Digital hard drives. On SAME laptops Error does NOT occur when karmic 9.10 is installed on 60 GB Hitachi hard drives.
- boot system from from karmic 9.10 CD
- start terminal
- start nautilus file manager as admin (sudo nautilus)
- in nautilus select laptop's internal drive
note: I had to first start nautilus as user in order for it to show internal drive
- go to /boot/grub/grub.cfg
- right-click grub.cfg and choose properties
- select tab permissions
- change permissions of 'owner: root' from 'read-only' to 'read and write'
- right-click grub.cfg and open with gedit

I tried to install ubuntu alongside Windows 7 on my computer this afternoon. Now I cannot boot any operating system anymore, unfortunately.
When trying to boot, the following error message appears on my display:
error: no such device: c4d250ab-b08f-4a9a-84b9-344d9ea61e03.
The following steps led to this problem:
1) First try with wubi
- I made a new partition of 100MB, using the Windows 7 system tools. I gave this partition the name U: and restarted the computer twice
- I then downloaded Wubi from ubuntu.com/download and tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on this new partition U:
- Installing worked well, but after rebooting an error message appeared (after ubuntu sucessfully booted) and told me "no root file system is defined". When I clicked on "okay", the message just appeared again and did not let me continue.
- Thus I un-installed ubuntu 11.04 again in Windows 7 (using the Windows 7 system tools to un-install programs)
2) Second try
- In a sec

error: no such device: 171ac798-94c6-4085-a564-cdae6a99a2b6. grub rescue
I tried the grub rescue disk to see if it recovers and fixes grub but no option to repair grub is available see
Note I tied different setting for my disk controller i.e. RAID and ACHI to no avail and so returned to a standard SATA mode
I can see drives from the grub rescue so disks are viewable dont know about writing to them to fix grub though.
I have read some of the other posts and tried:
error unknown filesystem
Any help appreciated to get something running

It's a fresh 12.10 amd64 ubuntu install. I shrunk the ntfs partition on the 2nd disk from windows then chose for ubuntu to install itself alongside Windows 8.
Edit: This is a desktop that was purchased in 2007.
