GRUB error: no such disk after new install

I've recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server 64-bit on a brand new machine, and on startup, after the initial grub message it pauses for about 7 seconds and prints the message "error: no such disk". After this error, it continues to boot normally so it's not causing any real problems except for the fact that it's an annoyance.
I'm using LVM with a single 1.5TB disk, and these are the interesting lines of the output from 'mount':
Code:
/dev/mapper/maine-root on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
/dev/sda5 on /boot type ext2 (rw)
/dev/mapper/maine-home on /home type ext4 (rw)
/dev/mapper/maine-media on /var/media type ext4 (rw)
with the following partition sizes:
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/maine-root
37G 1.9G 33G 6% /
/dev/sda5 228M 30M 186M 14% /boot
/dev/mapper/maine-home
37G 178M 35G 1% /home
/dev/mapper/maine-media

The issue is that when you ran the update it updated grub which re-wrote your bootloader. You will need to use the ubntu installation disk to rewrite the bootloader with the correct disk locations. Most likely it changed the HDD priority to make the ubuntu disk the primary and the former first disk secondary.

I installed ubuntu 12.04 64bit on an empty hard drive. Install went ok, but I cannot get it to go on line. I formatted the disk, by making it an external drive and using another computer to format this drive. I reinstalled the hard drive in the computer and put the disk in the CD drive. I started the computer and got this on a black screen:
error: no such partition grub rescue>
I cannot boot off of the disk, and the hard drive is empty. What should I do?
Thank you

I have a laptop runningUbuntu 12.04. I recently added a second hard drive in the optical bay. After installing the second hard drive I attempted to boot up and got "error: no such partition. grub rescue>" prompt. I checked the boot priority in BIOS and made sure it was set to notebook hard drive, which it was. The only way I can get into Ubuntu at the moment is to go to BIOS --> Boot Device Options, and then manually choose to boot into my hard drive with the Ubuntu install. Any insight on this issue?

Hello! I am the epitome of ignorant when it comes to this sort of thing so bear with me here..
A friend of mine is pretty computer savvy and installed ubuntu on my computer months ago just to as something to learn.. I didn't care and never used it because all of my music/data is on my windows partition and I don't know how to transfer it.. Ever since he installed it I've had a grub menu open startup to choose two versions of ubuntu, windows 7, and some sort of recovery mode/memory test option.. I always ignore and choose windows no problems, until now.. My computer has started to become slower then i'de like so I decided to reinstall the os. However I have a pretty new windows 7 i3 laptop that didnt come up with a disk. I'm supposed to be able to key "0" upon startup and access a hidden partition that will restore my computer to it's "out-of-box state".. I tried this with noo luck at all.. I looked for support from windows as to why the reinstall/reset wouldn't wor

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu & have the error as stated in the title of this thread.
I'm not sure why or how this could have happened as my laptop was working fine earlier in the day with no boot problems. I switched on to use Sat pm & the error message appeared?!?
I have been reading the solutions in the Ubuntu documentation and have tried to resolve, the 'Set' command brings back the following:
prefix=(hd0,msdos7)/boot/grub
root=hd0,msdos7
but the 'Is' command coming back as an 'Unknown command'.
So I'm not stuck with how to get my system up & running again.
Pls help.
Thanks
