grub rescue, error: no such device:
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 14, 2011
I recently installed ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop. I moved 1000 miles away, and my computer was a car for 26 hours, and this afternoon I added more RAM. That was all before booting today. When turning on my computer, after the bios screen, this message shows up
error: no such device : 9942b174-aae8-480c-a2c3-ba2e9a58fe21
grub rescue>
I have no idea what to do to fix it, and I spent an hour or so looking around on the forums. I really just need to be able to get to my Windows partition, but I cannot figure out how to do that.
Sorry if this is formatted incorrectly, I'm very new to this forum =]

Hello i am having a slight problem with booting into ubuntu. I currently have ubuntu 11.04 installed on my internal hdd on my laptop. I was trying to install the same version of ubuntu on an external hdd for my wife to try with a live cd and was successful. But now my laptop wont even boot into the os selection screen in grub with out that external hdd connected to my laptop. it only displays, error: no such device: (long series of numbers for name of device) grub rescue> any help in fixing this would be fantastic as i feel like im going to put my forehead through the screen......

HI. I have a problem. every time i boot my laptop i get
error: no such device. [insert numbers]
grub rescue>
I've tried many things to fix it and nothing has worked. I have a liveCD but it won't read it. and the only command i can do is
grub rescue> ls
(hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (hd1) (hd1,1)
i cant do anything else i always get "unknown filesystem" or "unknown command"
I really don't know what to do anymore. I need to get back into Windows 7 because I have all my files on that...and if i do what my friend told me to do (wipe the hard drive) i'd lose EVERYTHING and I really dont want to go back and re download 3100 songs and rewrite all my music. So if you can help it'd be much appreciated.

Grub Rescue, error: no such device: (unknow UUID)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 2, 2013
I installed a new motherboard last night and can not boot.
Grub comes up with no such device. The UUID it lists does not match any drives or partitions I have or have had. The grub.cfg lists all the proper UUIDs and does not list the one it states is missing. I have tried grub-update, grub-install --recheck, etc. Nothing seems to be working. and I can not find this UUID listed anywhere so I do not know where GRUB is getting it. Fstab only has one UUID and it is correct.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"
After a bit of searching I found this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708 I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista?
Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?
EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incr

So here's my situation:
I have two desktops. One is using Windows XP Media Center and my new desktop doesn't have an OS yet. I tried installing Ubuntu 11.04 on my new desktop but the dvd drive wasn't working. So I hooked up the harddrive via USB to my old desktop and installed Ubuntu on the new harddrive. I did that thinking I could then install the hdd in my new desktop and Ubuntu would work. When I removed the external harddrive and restarted my old desktop I got the following "error: no such device, grub rescue" I can connect the external harddrive and then grub will load and I can choose which OS to load. I have tried Windows recovery using fixboot and fixmbr; however, fixmbr does nothing and fixboot gives the following "FIXBOOT cannot find the system drive, or the drive specified is not valid". I have also tried copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\ but that gives me Access is denied. Can anyone please help me fix this. I am not wanting linux on my old desktop, and I would l

Hi,
I'm a new member here!!
I installed Lucid Lynx 10.04 because we use it at school, I've got problem since the beginning because when I restarted my pc to go from Ubuntu to WinXP or vice versa I got the
error: no such device: hex number
grub rescue>
To run again the computer I needed to switch off it and then switch on again all the times.
When I spoke of the problem with my teacher he told me to delet the partition with Ubuntu. So I did it!! In theory now I've got only WinXP on my PC but I don't know it because when I switch on it there is the same error with only one difference: when I switch off the computer it doesn't work, the error remains!
Please help me!
ps: sorry for the mistakes but I'm not English!
