Hard disk failing? write error: Bad file descriptor
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 10, 2005
Hi,
I have a Linux Redhat 9 mail server. I am starting to see the following
error sometimes in the maillog:
SYSERR(root): putbody: write error: Bad file descriptor: 1 Time(s)
Does this indicate a failing file system?
I have checked lost+found on the both the system's partitions and
they are empty.
Can someone explain what this error might mean and what, if anything I
should do about it?
System Info:
Redhat 9 on Dell PE2450 with RAID5 array.
Thanks,
Geoff
[SOLVED] E297: Write error in swap file
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 1, 2009
I am trying to do a simple edit using vi on a large .sh file 818532 in size. I have loads of swap so I can't understand why I get the write error.
Swap 4192956K total, 2270396k used and 1922560k free
Am I missing something obvious.
Smaller files can be edited without any problems.
The OS is Linux Redhat 5
I assume it's a space issue as the temp .swp file that is generated is 1051811840 but this seems far bigger that the original file?
Is there another way to edit a large file as this just doesn't seem logical :-(

Hi All,
I am a running a java application on a linux machine where in i am redirecting its output to a file. I am running the application from /home. In the middle of the execution i am able to see the message "E297 : Write error in swap file" appearing at the bottom of the editor in which i opened my output. There is also also a java.io.IOException occuring which says " No space left on device". Then i deleted some of the unnecessary files in the /home directory. Even then the same problem reappears. Can somebody please help me :-(
Sudhir
P.S : What is the command in Linux to find the total space allocated to a directory/device (for eg /home)

Getting "E297: Write error in swap file" error!

Dear All,
I am new to Linux, I have installed Ubuntu in my laptop wich has windows Vista OS.
Error:
When I try to create new file in my home directory, I am getting the error - E297 and E303.
I guess no space left in my home directory to create or write any files in my home directory.
Note:
While installing the Ubuntu, I have exported the Windows Documents, so I believe it has occupied the whole space in this partition(18.5 GB).
Help me how to unmount the windows documents and make use of the memory allocated for Ubuntu.
When I run the df command in my terminal it gives-
File system 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted On
/dev/sda7 18239964 17379588 0 100% /
Thank You,
Senthil
Write error in Swap file

I tried to hibernate Ubuntu, but I got a write error in swap file and cannot allocate to compression file (or something like that).
I have Swap setup as logical on my second drive. Ubuntu is logical setup on my first drive. I also have several other distros on my first drive. This is my first time hibernating in Linux just to see if it works, which it didn't. It doesn't see the Swap partition or something?

write error (file system full?)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 10, 2005
I'm editing a document in vi, and when I try to save it, it says:
E514: write error (file system full?)
What's going on if I know the file system isn't anywhere near full? The machine is running Tomcat on Red Hat, and it's under load at the moment.
Thanks...
please wait...
