Changing the Default Shell.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 16, 2007
Does anyone know where Linux (in this case RHEL) keeps its default shell setting?
I know that shells can be changed by running chsh and changing the passwd file. This is not what I am trying to find.
These programs and files are initially set from some fefault setting .. . It is this that I need to find.
In the case of Red Hat oriented distros, the default is bash. I need to find a way to change this if possible.
Changing default OS in grub2.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 28, 2009
Good Morning. I have Windows Vista on sda and Ubuntu 9.10 and Parsix 3.0 on sdb. I just don't understand how grub2 works. When booting, grub2 still gives me a page for ~10 seconds that shows all three OS's and allows me the opportuniy to arrow dow to one to boot into it, but it has Ubuntu set as the default OS, and my wife wants Vista as default. Gotta keep her happy, you know. How can I make Vista the default OS in grub2? Thanks.
Changing login shell
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 31, 2012
How can I change my default (login) shell to /usr/bin/ksh from /bin/bash? Using chsh rejects ksh as a "valid" shell. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and ksh installed on the machine satisfactorily. I can enter ksh by typing "ksh" at a bash prompt, but I want to open directly to ksh.
Thanks in advance for the help.
[SOLVED] ubuntu: iptables => "ipconntrackftp" and changing default port (21) in proftpd
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 9, 2011
This is driving me crazy I really really hope someone can help me out.
I had proftpd running and working (with the default port 21).
But now I want to use IPTABLES in combination with a different FTP port.
I have the following ip_conntrack_ftp , modprobe ip_conntrack and ip_nat_ftp
I added these modules by in my "/etc/modules" file (1 module per line) and rebooted my UBUNTU VPS
My iptables looks like this: http://vpsbible.com/security/harden-...eate-firewall/
Changing default Apache2 port
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 12, 2011
So I have to change the default Apache2 port to something other than 80 because of my ISP blocking that port. So I change the listening port to 8000. However when I run a netstat test it shows that tcp 0.0.0.0:8000 is open and listening but under the program name it is blank. any ideas thanks for helping
already port forwarded 8000 in router
I don't have to change the virtual hosts do I? Already tried and didn't seem to work.
changing default port of SSH service
- date: November 13, 2009
sshd_config on my fedora server is modified to listen to ssh on 8022.
nmap -sS localhost displays 8022/open/ssh.
On my fedora client ssh_config is modified to 8022 as well. There is no firewall blocking any of the connection between the two.
however, nmap -sS a.b.c.d (server) shows -> 22/closed/ssh.
ssh -p 8022 -v [email protected]
on my client shows -=> debug1: connect to address a.b.c.d port 8022: No route to host.
How can i make this work, and why does nmap scan shows closed 22 instead of open 8022?
One more question, if i may please.
What program should i use on my server, that will completely blacklist an ip address that attempts to log in several times in a row with wrong credentials?
Changing default ports for smoothwall
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 9, 2003
I have smoothwall version 1.0.
Basically with my ISP (optusnet) I have major troubles accessing my server for ports 1024 and below. I tried to change the default ssh port (222) by editing the file:
/usr/local/etc/sshd_config. After I changed the default port and restarted the daemon I lost the service completly!
I also tried sshd -p xxxx
This didnt work either. Can someone please give me some info on how to change the port?
Thanks in advance!
