Need Help Troubleshooting Plymouth on Asus EeePC 1005HA Running UNR
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 1, 2010
Okay, here's the background & specifics:
I've installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on my Asus EeePC 1005HA and everything ran great, but I was interested in testing-out the next step in Ubuntu's start-up development: Plymouth.
I installed the 2.6.33 (2.6.33-020633rc2-generic) kernel to insure KMS availability--even though KMS has been enabled in the Ubuntu generic kernels since 2.6.29--and changed my sources to the Lucid (10.04) repos, downloaded Plymouth (0.8.0~6) and all the related dependencies, including GDM 2.29.1-0ubuntu9.
To make sure KMS was being used, I added the /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf file suggested here and edited my Grub2 (1.97~beta4-1ubuntu4.1) config file (/etc/default/grub) to allow for resolution set by the "gfxpayload=" setting on the kernel line.
Now, here's where my problem begins. Usplash and Xsplash are successfully removed and boot is, relatively, lightning quick--as compared to the previous Usplash+Xsplash boot time; however, ther
Help me choose a dual (android/ubuntu) bootable tablet
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 13, 2011
I've finally decided to give up my 2007-era laptop and buy one of those shiny new tablet computers that are all the rage.
There are a few things that are critical for me:
- Ability to run Android and Ubuntu! Either dual-boot or Android from within Ubuntu. I won't pay money for anything where I can't have complete root.
- 1GB RAM or more
- Ports, ports, ports: USB port, SD port, headphone port
- Wifi and bluetooth
- Real 5 hours battery runtime
- Bright screen and durable, finger friendly glass (gorillaglass?)
- Well-built, durable and reliable
There are a few other things that are on my wishlist:
- Upgradeable RAM - 2 years from now, when 8GB of RAM costs $50, I'd like to upgrade.
- Full-size USB port rather than mini/micro USB
- Charges from USB - I dont want to carry a charger thats the same size as the tablet!
- Full size SD card slot - So that I can use the cards that I already have
I realize that I'm asking a lot, but I'm willing to pay. I prefer to stay under $500, but $1000 i
Help: Ubuntu vs Fedora?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 18, 2007
I see many using Ubuntu. Why? What is the essential difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Is it paid support?
Fewer releases over a given time?
A greater number of available packages?
Easier installation?
Can I get a few brief comments? (I don't want to start a flame war.)

HELP,Can't install anything but Ubuntu
location: linux.com - date: April 12, 2011
I'm somewhat of a newbie to Linux but have used it in the past and use the live CD's for data recovery. I recently tried installing Zorin OS 4, Linux Mint 10.0 and Ubuntu 10.10 and 9.1 on a fresh HDD and was only able to get Ubuntu 9.1 to install. These were all the 64bit versions. The Ubuntu 9.1 version was 32bit. When installing Zorin or Mint, it will start with the splash screen and then there is nothing on the screen. Here's my system:
AsRock 4coredual with VIA PT880 Pro/PT880 Ultra Chipsets
Intel quad core Q6600
2 gigs of DDR2 800
WD 320G RE3 HDD
Nvidia 512mb PCI express
My question to you experts is why will only Ubuntu 9.1 only install and not Zorin or Mint? Is it the 32bit vs the 64bit?
I really wanted to install Zorin.
Thanks, Dave
Help make 7 an unlucky number for Microsoft

Just felt the need to make this point, and though I'm focusing this post in the Ubuntu thread, I think it's important to make this a widespread effort from the entire linux-based OS community... GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT, JUST LIKE THE ELECTION LAST YEAR... GET INVOLVED TO MAKE THE CHANGE...
ENCOURAGE ALL PEOPLE YOU CAN TO AT LEAST TRY UBUNTU OR ANOTHER FAVORITE DISTRO THAT WOULD SUIT THEIR NEEDS, BEIT FROM A LIVECD OR LIVEUSB OR FROM A SYSTEM YOU YOURSELF RUN...
Talking points:
* Point out that the majority (something like 80-90%) of the developers who contribute to the linux kernel and other open source programs like openoffice ARE NOT pimply-faced teens but software developers and engineers working for fortune500 companies in corprate environments who RESPECT the open-source software model of taking open-source code and using it, modifying if necessary and giving back the improved code, "paying it forward" in a way, to help the community thrive and to help the next individu
help with selecting a distribution

I am new to the forum and I need some advice on which distro to select. I am a legal professional and amateur programmer. in order to save money on legal software, I designed my own using Visual Basic and Visual Basic for Applications. In particular, I have used VBA to integrate Access, Word, and Outlook, so I have a lot of code I will need to duplicate in a Linux environment. I am tired of Windows, and I am tired of updating my other software applications every time Microsoft puts out a new version. I want to switch to Linux for the affordability and the flexibility. I absolutely rely on Dragon Naturally Speaking as well as Adobe Acrobat in my practice. If there are no Linux based versions of these applications, or other voice transcription, pdf applications for Linux that will give me the same functionality, I will probably not be able to make the switch. Any thoughts on which distro I should use or which apps would give me the same functionality in a Linux environment?
