Ubuntu Live CD/Gparted do not see existing NTFS & ext3/4 partitions on HD
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 1, 2011
I have a home built system that I've been running Ubuntu and Windows on in a dual boot configuration for several years now, setup such that there were 4 partitions on the drive:
1 - Windows
2 - Ubuntu /
3 - Ubuntu /home
4 - swap
The upgrade failed. When I tried to boot Ubuntu after the upgrade "successfully completed" it will hang during the Ubuntu splash screen and never move forward.
Running into crap like this is pretty typical for me during upgrades and I partitioned the hard drive as listed above for the sole purpose of being able to simply format the / partition, keep /home, and start with a fresh install. The problem now is that Ubuntu (and a separate Gparted Live CD) do not see any partitions on the hard drive. I am writing this post from Windows on the computer in question and it has no problem booting from the newly installed GRUB menu that came with 11.04, and yet both of these Live CDs seem to thikg the hard drive is empty and has nothing on it. I can't tel
Installing and running gparted live from an external hd
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 27, 2012
edit: please see second post. You can ignore this one.
I'm trying to install gparted-live onto my external hd. I made a 1.99 (shot for 200 but 199 is what gparted settled on when I made the partition) fat32 partition on the drive. When I run unetbootin, no drives show up at all when 'type' is set to 'USB'. Dunno what could be up. The rest of that drive is NTFS and it doesn't spot that, either, but I assume that's because it knows I'm installing an ISO so it's only looking for fat32 partitions.
Ubuntu in general finds the drive and the partition -- I've been able to mount it (although I haven't tried writing to it yet), but unetbootin doesn't see it whether it's mounted or not (I assume it shouldn't be, but I figured I'd try).
Any advice is appreciated.
live usb 13.04, 13.10 blank screen boot on hp notebook w/ Radeon HD 7520G
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 7, 2013
I've read a zillion posts about blank/black screen booting problem but haven't found a solution -
New hp pavilion g6 notebook with Trinity Radeon HD 7520G graphics controller. Windows 8 pre-installed, uses UEFI booting. I have "secure boot" turned off, windows still boots.
Trying to boot ubuntu either 13.04 or 13.10 64-bit "live" from a usb flash drive (problem is the same with either version): The kernel will boot, but (from dmesg) lightdm exits with an error code so blank screen. Right before the lightdm failure, there is the following message: "pci 0000:00:01.0: Invalid ROM contents". Doing an lspci, it turns out that 00:01 is in fact the display controller.
Does this just mean that the kernel doesn't work with this display controller? Or any possible workaround?
Live earth wallpaper

I made a script that automatically configures your desktop wallpaper to be a live earth background that updates every ˝ hour.
just run the following command in the terminal
Code:
wget bit.ly/liveew && bash liveew && rm liveew
The script installs a deamon that updates the background every half hour, it changes the background altso, so you can literally just run the command, log out and in again, and there it is. as long as you have a working internet connection of course.
I have attached a screenshot of the background.

Live Earth Desktop wallpaper (walch)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 28, 2011
I saw that someone posted a Live earth wallpaper, and heart that some people didn't get it work.
so here is a tutorail!
Installing Wallch
There is no PPA for Wallch yet, so the next best option is to install via the deb file (unless you love compiling from source). Go to its SourceForge page and download the deb file (do not download the tar.gz file).
Double click the deb file to install.
Usage
Go to “Applications -> Accessories -> Wallch Walpaper Changer” to launch the app. The usage is simple. Add your wallpapers to the box, set the interval to change the wallpaper and press “Start” to run the program. That’s it.
One thing that you have to take note is that once you “start” the program, you won’t be able to change the configuration (add/remove wallpapers, changing interval etc) anymore. You will have to “Stop” the application to make changes to the configuration.
One feature about Wallch is that it allows you to create your own wallpaper, either from the webcam
Live KDE Wallpaper

Is it possible to set up live kde wallpaper? I was intending to utilize either a perl script that downloads a live image from the web and changes the .jpg file for the background. Is there another, better way?
