Clicking on Calendar in top right locks up Apps bar and lower desktop bar
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 3, 2008
As per subject, when I clicked on the calendar in the top right corner of my desktop, it freezes my Apps, Places, System and Quick Launch functions, while the bottom bar is also frozen. I can still alt + tab, and weirdly enough, my music player, pidgin button, wired network icon and sound volume still work.
My shutdown button doesn't though. Help please?
Also, Ubuntu keeps playing this odd elevator-like/ bell jingle even though I'm doing nothing (music isn't even on). What's running is Firefox, Pidgin and Rhythmbox. It's getting a bit annoying and I don't know what it's trying to tell me.
Visual Studio 2013 Windows 8.1 App Debugging Black Bar Top Right
location: linuxexchange.com - date: February 21, 2014
I've been unable to figure out what the meaning of this black bar in the top right hand corner is while debugging my Win8 store app. Anyone have an idea how to remove it?
Note I was unable to take a screen snip of it so I had to use my phone.. weird.

Ubuntu 12.04 (64bit) Completely Locks Up on Dell Vostro 470
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 8, 2012
So, we recently purchased a new Dell Vostro 470 with a Core i5 3450 processor and promptly installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 64-bit on it. We've got two identical Dell displays connected to it and for the first couple days it ran beautifully.
Then it froze. After the first incident it pretty much happens every 2-4 hours or so when being used.
When frozen, the keyboard is completely unresponsive. The NUMLOCK key doesn't toggle the LED. No CTRL-SYSRQ-x key sequences (REISUB) work. CTRL-ALT-Fn sequences don't either, nor does CTRL-ALT-DEL. The mouse is likewise useless and the display is completely frozen with no screen updates -- not a single pixel ever changing.
We ran the full Dell Diagnostic suite that comes with the Dell BIOS which scans many hardware components, including doing their equivalent of a memory test (we did the "deep" or "detailed" version of their scan). No errors.
Then, while running Ubuntu I opened the Disk Manager and opened the Smart Data (or was i
<PrintScreen> key locks up my keyboard in Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 2
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 6, 2010
Basically, whenever I press <PrintScreen> I cannot type anything and on some rare occasions my X crashes.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 2 on an Acer Aspire One AOA110-1545.
xterm locks up during ssh
- date: July 25, 2008
Just started tonight. I ssh [email protected]
and login. I can vi a file, move files, do this, do that and about 3 minutes into the session - nothing, locked tight. Even ctrl[ doesn't do a thing. Only thing that works is the X in the top right corner.

All current packages loaded. It was fine yesterday, tonight :-(
2013 "Top 100 OpenSource Linux Apps"
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 25, 2013
Way back when we were all much younger, there was a wonderful thread on UbuntuForums that is unfortunately now closed.
It was called "Top 100 Open-Source Linux Apps"
Is there a modern-day version? Please rest assured I will be Googling myself silly looking for one but if there is already a list, it would sure save time.
I am in the midst of migrating from Windows and would appreciate Linux correlates of Office (known about Open Office for years of course) as well as other Windows programs that you experienced folks deem worthy of a "sophisticate" like me.
large NFS copy locks up/hang client with large files (again) (lucid)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 9, 2010
Good day all,
On lucid 10.04 client, with debian (sid) nfs server, using nfsv4, the client machine locks up/hangs on transfer of large files ~GiB+ to the nfs mount.
I am not alone, this was reported by:
Same behaviour with cp or nautilus.
No problems with scp, rsync, samba(except its super slow - no not an option)
Read from the server seems ok.
With the mouse free to move and everything else stuck I thought this could be the nic module or interrupts or something. Loading the module with debug enabled showed nothing.
The client machine is Dell XPS M1710 with:
Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5752 Gigabit Ethernet adaptor.
(so using wired in case you ask), standard mtu, connecting through a fast ethernet switch to via epia-en server, nic:
VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6120/VT6121/VT6122 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
NFS is mounted as (from fstab)
Nautilus STILL locks up on folders with many files
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 29, 2012
I am running an up to date installation of Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome Nautilus 2.30.1
Folders with several hundred files can take 20 seconds or more to open, and with a few thousand files Nautilus locks up completely and requires a Force Quit to recover control.
This has been going on basically FOREVER with 10.04
Several months ago, I found a thread that recomended to disable and remove Ubuntu One to fix this, and that did at least partially fix things - at least for awhile.
I have also tried disabling thumbnail rendering, but this doesn't seem to help either.
Also, copying large files, or large numbers of files through external USB drives also remains hit or miss through Nautilus (reports the dreaded bogus "Error splicing file").
Note: This is NOT due to an attempt to copy a single file larger than 4 Gigs onto a Fat32 drive (I know that is not possible due to limitations of the Fat32 file system). It happens many times when simply copying several hundred me
Server locks up: BUG: soft lockup CPU#0 stuck
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 14, 2011
I've had my server running for some time now, but in some rare occasions I get lock-ups with this error:
... BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [mysqld:1330] ... (repeating)..
I've found some threads about some similar problems, but there's no clear solution since it seams everyone have different orgins (espesially boot-up trouble which I dont have)
The lock-ups usually (only!) come when there's a lot of traffic to my rTorrent-server (some 5-10MB/s). My server can run for months/weeks as long there's not too much torrent-traffic. I'm running a lot of traffic from/to the server locally (Samba, FTP etc.) which never triggers these problems.
I then ask myself if the bug has anything to relate to mysql-daemon which it marks at the end of the BUG-line? I'm running both Apache webserver and Pure-FTPD which both have connection to mysqld. My rTorrent server uses wTorrent with SQLite and Lighttpd so
