Is there a trick to show linux command's specific option? Such as I want to know some detail about tar's -z option, and I try this: tar --help | grep '-z' but shows nothing.
So is it possible just show details about specific command option?
Appreciate first if you can help me.

Need to access Linux Mint command line through Windows
location: linux.com - date: December 12, 2011
Hello. I made a big mistake. I was compiling Blender on my Linux Mint. Because some packages were not on the normal repositories. I played stupid (mainly because I was being lazy). And I add the debian.org's repository. Which was really really stupid. Because now, by default the repositories were of debian.org . So when an error prompted on the update manager I restart with the command line and I did sudo apt-get update (again I was being an idiot because those were unstable packages) And I basically switched it all to debian's repositories (I am the biggest douche on the world). So long story short I can't even login to the command line on my Mint (11 Katya). So I am on my second partition (with Windows). Posting this. What I need now is a command line on Windows so I can solve my problem. Thank you so much! *facepalm*

I have a shell script written in Unix using command:
set -A envvar1 $envvar2
typeset -l variable1
What is the equivalent command for set -A and typeset -l in Linux?
Thanks

Thought it'd be handy to compile a thread with online resources for new Linux users who want to learn the command line. I'll link it in my signature.

new to linux, exhaustive command line exercises
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 8, 2006
Hello all
I am trying to switch to linux, though it seems not so easy. at least as comfortable as with windows for day to day tasks regarding documents, pictures, sounds, videos etc.
first i want to get comfortable with commands. i see that general short guidelines found in many sections for configuration with command lines is not good enough for a newcomer.
I am looking for exhaustive excercises for checking various configurations to get to know the devices, command prompt better, without risking my system too much. (I installed Ubuntu on AMD Athelon 850MHz)
for example, just few lines over 'mount' command are not enough..
any clues?

flush my swap/ram? command?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 28, 2005
anyone know of a terminal/run command to clear out my RAM and my swap space? the other OS had a prog called freemem which would clean it out, and older machines would run a bit faster after it. I'd love to flush it out on this work machine I use (pent 2, mepis 3.3)
ideas?
please wait...
