Ethernet Connection Speed Not Configuring Properly on Dell Optiplex 740 with Ubuntu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 20, 2013
Hey guys, I'm having a bit of an issue with my computer. I just recently installed Ubuntu on one of my household computers, and I'm having an issue with my Ethernet Connection. I have broadband internet which is run directly to a 24 Port Ethernet Key, which is in turn connected directly to my Modem. My internet connection is rated at 100 Mbps. When I plug my Ethernet cable into the computer, the connection status says it's connected, but at 1000 Mbps, and the connection does not actually work. I have another computer, a Dell Dimension 8300, which had used that same cable before with no issues.
Any Ideas on how to fix this?

Same as all the Alphas and Betas...
I can install older ubuntu 8.10-9.10, Mint whatever based off of 9.10, Arch/Kahel, Centos, etc.
This is not a my box doesn't like linux problem, it's a Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't like my computer problem.
- Boot livecd
- Select install(I have tried desktop 1386 & x64, server x64 and alternate install x64, all discs work on my Thinkpad R61)
- Goes to a blank screen with blinking cursor
- Locked up completely, no troubleshooting can be accomplished from screen
When system is locked I do NOT have to hold the power button to initiate shutdown. A simple press of the button will do so immediately.
tried the following flags:
acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, nomodeset
-all the same results
Fails so early I don't have to wait long....

Ubuntu linux freezing on dell optiplex 740 small form factor desktop
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 6, 2014
I'm not sure if this post is in the right area or not. I have a dell 740 optiplex small form factor desktop that I'd like to use with ubuntu linux. I have a 64 bit desktop so I'd like to use ubuntu linux version 14.04 64 bit from the download section. I'd like to run linux only off of a DVD and just learn it.
The problem is that when I do this, ubuntu always freezes on me. When I boot off of the DVD, I click on try ubuntu, the ubuntu desktop appears and then my system just freezes right there. I can't move the mouse and the keyboard doesn't work. I can't eject the optical disk drive. The only option is to hold in the power button to turn the system off.
Any experience adapting a Dell Optiplex 755 for home use?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 19, 2012
My workplace is having a silent auction to get rid of some of its old workstations, which would be a considerable upgrade from my home computer, which I cheerfully refer to as The Relic. I'm fairly confident that my bid will see me taking one of the office models home.
After a few searches, I thought I'd best take my inquiry here and get the real expert opinion.
Aside from installing Ubuntu (a given), are there other things I should take into consideration in adapting this computer for home use?
3D acceleration is a must, as I'm active in Second Life and World of Warcraft. I've read that the 755 may have clearance problems with some 3D cards.
Problem with embedded NIC on Dell Optiplex 390
- date: February 14, 2012
Quick system summary. I have a pair of Dell Optiplex 390s that must have Lucid Server x64 installed on them for a particular project (the software only supports LTS releases). We got these computers for the project, and they're almost identical (only real difference is one is minitower with i5 4GB RAM, other is desktop with i3 and 2GB RAM).
The problem is with the embedded NICs. I believe it to be purely a driver problem. They work fine in Windows, and both systems are affected the same way. Here is what the system has to say about the NIC:

product: RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller
vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

Mandrake Official 10.1 could not install on DELL OPTIPLEX 320
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 24, 2007
I try to install Mandrake official on the DELL OPTILPLEX 320 machine, at the first when boot from Linux CD, it halt with the screen display "Detecting USB devices", while it takes so long(over 20 mins) that I have not patient to wait.
Therebefore, I have to install M$ XP. After the XP installed, I download the latest VMware 6.0 and try again to install Mdk10.1 on this virtual system, yes, the installation skip the USB detecting process, however, I could not start X server within this MDK.
Ths strange is, there're four screens in the vmware windows, and I can input root/passwd in the command line. The only trouble is, X server starts failed.
Does anyone meet the same issue before?
Please help me fix it. If can not resolve, I'll install RHEL on this annoying dell machine.
Can't find network adapter on Dell Optiplex 790
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 16, 2011
I'd like to use the LTS release (so 10.04 at the moment), but when I install it on a new Dell Optiplex 790 it appears it doesn't include the right driver for the on-board Ethernet adapter. I've been able to get the network going using a USB adapter, and I've already done the apt-get update/upgrade to install the latest updates and rebooted, but it still can't find the on-board network adapter. Is there a way to get the latest drivers using the LTS release stream?
Dell Optiplex 755 (Intel 82Q35 Integrated Graphics) Ubuntu 12.04 slow
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 2, 2013
I hope someone can help resolve this problem for me as I have tried searching about this without any luck. I have a Dell Optiplex 755 desktop and I decided to replace Windows Vista with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. However, using 12.04 is extremely sluggish at times (the user interface) and application windows regularly stall and fade (freezing). I have seen this bug report which looks identical to the problem I am having.
Specifications: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E4700 @ 2.60GHz × 2 and 2 GB RAM.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
Duo or Quad core Dell OptiPlex 755
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 16, 2009
I'm getting a new computer at work and I've been given a choice about whether to get a Duo or Quad core computer.
I've got no support for being on Linux here, so it's my responsibility to make sure that Ubuntu is doing to work on the computer that is purchased. Also, if there are issues between the hardware and software I need to resolve them myself.
I've only been using Ubuntu for a few months (Previously was on Fedora), and I'm relatively new to Linux in general. It was pretty challenging for me to move to Ubuntu, and because of the lack of support, it's a bit of a political issue for me to be down for an extended length of time setting up my machine.
Issues of concern for me:
Dual head Radon. (Currently using http://intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html for setup although that was a beast and a half to figure out.)
LAMP (MySQL and PHP 5)
VirtualBox would be nice although I don't currently have it set up.
Mounting highly secure Windows boxes
The two machines I'm looki
