how to set up ssh on a different port number and firewall issues
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 8, 2011
On the server, I want to ssh with different port number other than 22, also set firewall accordingly to allow out going traffic from port 80, and only allow couple client computers that has static IP to ssh.
I checked http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers
registered ports are from 1024-49151
and dynamic/private ports are those from 49152-65535
has anyone used a dynamic/private port numbers for ssh? Or is there a specific unassigned registered port number set that I shoud use? What is preffered?
In addition to that how do I permit the specific port to open on the firewall with gufw? I also have ufw installed
For a server for port 80, do I need to allow incoming, and deny outgoing ???
I checked https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW
is that all I need for proper set up?
sudo ufw allow 80
sudo ufw allow 22(or whatever the ssh port is)
I also found this. On terminal
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 192.168.1.0/24 -m state --s
Accessing Jenkins on different change port number
location: linuxexchange.com - date: August 18, 2015
I'm trying to use Jenkins CI on following system:
# cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.6 (Santiago)
# uname -a
Linux X 2.6.32-504.30.3.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jul 9 15:20:47 EDT 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
# yum repolist | grep jenkins
jenkins Jenkins 296
# rpm -q jenkins
while Jenkins works as expected, changing port from 8080 to port 80 seems somewhat challenging:
# grep JENKINS_PORT /etc/sysconfig/jenkins
# vi /etc/sysconfig/jenkins
# grep JENKINS_PORT /etc/sysconfig/jenkins
# service jenkins start
Starting Jenkins [ OK ]
# service jenkins status
jenkins dead but pid file exists
# netstat -nat | grep LISTEN | grep 80
# service iptables status
iptables: Firewall is not running.
# cat /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.

Different Wallpaper for each desktop in ubuntu 11.10
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 15, 2011
I recently upgraded to ubuntu 11.10 Onieric Ocelot and really loving the vast improvement over the previous version. However, there's one minor issue i can't seem to find an answer for: Compiz's multiple wallpapers.
I followed this post for ubuntu 11.04:
but when i got to /apps/nautilus/preferences, show_desktop entry doesnt exist. I searched for it and found a few entries already unchecked.
How do you get multiple wallpapers to work in Oneiric? Cause the old ways of doing it doesnt work anymore.
Xmonad: different wallpaper for each desktop
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 22, 2011
It's occurred to me that with Xmonad's configuration library is powerful enough that I should be able to set it up to give me a different wallpaper for each desktop.
When I press MOD-1, I want to switch to desktop 1 and also run the following command:
Cant ssh to changed port number
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 5, 2012
Wonder if someone can help.
I'm running ubuntu 10.04.4.
I've edited /etc/ssh/sshd_config and changed the default Port 22 to a number above 20 000 and restared the service. I can see in the auth.log file that the server is now listening on this port, however I get an operation timed out error when trying to ssh on this port.
I have another server (albeit fedora) setup on this same port which I can access without a problem.
If I try ssh to the default Port 22 I just get connection refused, which is the expected response.
I've even tried disabling UFW, but that made no difference.
Any clues would be much appreciated.

location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 8, 2007
I'm trying to backup files using rsync from my remote server using the command given below. The problem is SSH on the remote server isn't listening on the default port, instead it's using a higher port number 8496.

Port number used by server when using dynamic port forwarding in SSH?
- date: November 19, 2011
Common practice is to use the Dynamic port forwarding feature of SSH to make a secure connection while browsing the web, i.e.
ssh -D 1234 [email protected]
where "me" is my user login ID and "some_server" is a trusted server somewhere that is running SSHD. If I configure my web-browser to use a socks proxy with the socks host set to "localhost" (or 127.0.0.1) and port set to 1234, I can browse the web and the web servers will think the traffic is to/from server "some-server" rather than my local computer. Not to mention that the connection between my local computer and "some_server" will now be encrypted.
But what port number is the server "some_server" using for communication to/from the other web servers on the internet? I know the connection between my local computer and "some_server" is using port 22 (standard SSH port), but what port is "some_server" using to request/receive internet traffic?
