Ubuntu, FreeNAS, QNAP or Win Home Server 2011 for file Storage
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 31, 2013
Hi everyone! I'm new to this website and new to Ubuntu. Thanks for being here!
I need to setup a file storage server. People will be writing to and from the drive all day with average reads / writes of about 100mb. Regular reads and writes of ~2 GB once or twice an hour. About 15 people will be accessing it for two different drives. So I'm having a hard time figuring if I should build or buy two ~$400 machines or one <$800 machine.
The problems I'm facing in addressing these issues are my lack of knowledge and a budget. Common problems I think.
I see the top options as:
Machine I will build
Ubuntu Server 64bit
Win Home Server 2011
Specs of the machine would be:
4.1Ghz Quad Core FM2 AMD CPU-GPU-APU
Small SSD around 64GB for OS
2x 2tb mirrored
2x 2tb mirrored
QNAP NAS (link to prospective hardware)
Preinstalled no more than 1GB RAM
What do you think the best choice is?
Please consider I only have 2 weeks to implement a s
9.04 Fresh Install: Unable to download pictures into digikam/fspot
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 29, 2009
I've been an Ubuntu user for a long time. I upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty by doing a fresh install of Jaunty (Ubuntu, not Kubuntu) and wiping out my Hardy root partition.
After the install, I had a few problems most of which are resolved except this one. I cannot seem to download pictures from my digital camera using digikam. Nautilus shows that the camera is mounted and I can even see the pictures via Nautilus. Digikam seems to autodetect the camera, but is unable to download the pictures. Digikam simply says that it failed to connect. No error messages. Looking in /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog gave no hint of the problem.
For what it's worth I'm having the problem with Picasa3 and F-Spot too.
This worked perfectly well with Hardy.
Thanks for any assistance,
How to change user ID on a QNAP NAS?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 11, 2012
I've got a QNAP TS-110 which I access via NFS from my Ubuntu 12.04 system.
I guess that NFS on a typical home network does not use any user authentication. I've read in various places and I found that it is important that the user on the Linux machine and the NAS have same UID and/or GID.
Now my main user on Ubuntu has uid=1000(me) gid=1000(me).
On the NAS the main user has uid=500 gid=100
I figure that this is the reason that I repeatedly run into access problems. (Is that so?)
My plan was to SSH into the NAS and use
usermod -u <newuid> -g<newgid> <username>
The problem is on the NAS there is no usermod installed.
On it.toolbox.com I've read that I could simply edit
with the wanted UID and GID.
In the Fedora forum is lots of discussion on how to fix the files afterwards.
My questions now are:
Can I simply edit /etc/passwd and group? How can I check that no user
Permissions when mounting QNAP samba share ?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 13, 2008
I have a problem when I try to mount a Samba/CIFS share in an Ubuntu client, the share is published from my new QNAP-409 NAS.
The problem is that when I try to mount it in Ubuntu the permissions on the mounted directory is always set to 777.
Is there some way I can force the permissions so only a single user or users within a certain group has write permission to the mounted directory ?
The /etc/fstab line on the Ubuntu machine looks as follows:
//192.168.0.150/disk1 /mnt/network/qnap409/disk1 cifs noauto,credentials=/etc/samba/credentials,uid=1000,gid=100,file_mode=0644,dir_mo de=0755,iocharset=utf8 0 0
The permissions of the mounted directory looks as follows:
drwxrwxrwx 2 myuser users 0 2008-08-13 08:01 disk1
On other shares which is published from my Ubuntu server, the file_mode and dir_mode parameters works perfectly and the directories is mounted with 755 permissions, but for some reason this doesn't work with the shares from the QNAP. I'm s
ftp via Kerberos access Webserver via Dyndns to QNAP
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 8, 2011
i have setup a webserver on a QNAP machine accessible through a sub domain from dyndns. I can access the webserver via FTP and was wondering and trying to comphrehend how to possible connect more securely via Kerberos. SFTP and https are things that will not work on a subdomain of dyndns. I understood that Kerberos can make a secure connection, i have installed it from the software centre and thought it will be like an ftp program Looking at the threads it looks more its a program to create and ftp server ?
Your input is welcome.

Gents, although I am a long time Ubuntu user and advocate, I still struggle with the command line mumbo jumbo. It is just one of those things that I find difficult to grasp.
I bought a Qnap NAS box in order to have an efficient backup solution on my network. Quietness and low running costs swayed me rather than using an old pc with Freenas installed.
I gave my Qnap device a name 'qnapnas' during the initial setup. I installed Samba and clicked on the Menu> Places > Network option and lo and behold it was there as QNAPNAS. Clicking on the icon mounted it and revealed the folders within.
I am now trying to backup to the NAS via Unison or via a simple script.....that is were it all goes pear shaped and my head explodes!
When the QNAPNAS is mounted its location changes to smb://qnapnas.local.
I don't know how to get the NAS to mount on my PC or laptop at boot up. Access to the NAS via ssh is by Admin only. I used Unison backup for years t
Locked out of linux based NAS (QNAP TS409Pro) My fault though

A couple of weeks I was improving my home NAS a little by adding cron scripts for backups and a couple of things, I've been logging in for a while and starting bash (installed with busybox) as its a little more feature filled than the terminal that comes default. Anyway, I'd done it so often (started /bin/bash, that is), and without thinking added /bin/bash as the login shell for the admin user (the only ssh account, unfortunately), without thinking that the the file doesn't actually appear until after my path has been built and the busybox sym-links are installed. So basically now I can't login as its not pointing at a valid root shell.
The things I’ve tried so far are:
- Basic telnet/SSH login attempts, running a command as part of the SSH statement (i.e ssh [email protected]
****.local cat /etc/passwd)
- Issue chsh to attempt a login shell change (ssh [email protected]
****.local chsh /bin/sh)
- Writing a dodgy web script (total failure)
- Writing one of the QNAP installa

I have a QNAP NAS that`s running some Linux distro (have no idea what) and i have a few issues that i hope you can help me to solve.
On a daily base I'm a Mac user and all together i do know how to use terminal and how to log on to the NAS using ssh.
1. I use rSync to backup files from the NAS to Amazon S3. I have S3rsync.com in-between because S3 does not support rSync.
This works pretty well but i get no information on how the backup process ended and if any errors occurred.
How can i setup rSync on the NAS to write a log file?
How can i setup rSync to send an eMail if it fails?
2. I connect to the NAS using terminal from my MAC, and i`m really annoyed by the fact that the connection times out and disconnects me. Can i disable the time out go change the time to 1 hour or more?
Anything you need to know please ask me!

both are clean installs
I'm sure it will work if I start over, but I had this happen last year & finally gave up,
it would be nice to find out what is going on
