Disable Turning Screen Off While Watching Video
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 16, 2012
Hello everybody!
So I'm watching videos online and whether I'm in full screen mode or not Ubuntu will turn off my screen when it is inactive for 10 minutes, but it's not really inactive because I'm watching videos and not moving the mouse or doing anything else. How can I stop Ubuntu from turning off the screen when I'm watching videos?

Hello to everybody. Tested with multiple linux distros like debian, Mint, Ubuntu and some others (2-3 latest releases) and different hardware. Has anyone manage to have screensaver or screen blanking auto disabled when watching a video through a web browser? Like vlc does for example or like other OS act. Thanks in advance.

[SOLVED] Disable touch screen (ntrig) on Ubuntu 10.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 11, 2010
I have a HP tx2 touchsmart laptop and I have installed 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 on it. (Kernel 2.6.32-22)
The touchscreen and the digitizer pen work out of the box, however, the problem is that it disables the touchpad and forces me to use the Digitizer Pen (stylus) which is very annoying.
I have already searched for ways to disable touchscreen without much success, most of the posts discuss enabling it rather than disabling it.The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist and I have removed the wacom drivers:
sudo apt-get purge wacom-tools xserver-xorg-input-wacom
I believe that ntrig is using some other drivers/packages which may need to be removed.
Ideally, I'd like to enable both Touch Screen and the Touch pad. But I am willing to give up touch screen functionality in favor of the touchpad. Please help or point me in the right direction.
PS: I do not come here often and I might have posted it in the wrong section. Please move the thread or xpost to the appropr
[solved] 12.04 how to (really) disable screensaver / screen blanker?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 25, 2012
I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 and I can't seem to be able to disble the screen blanker. After maybe 5 minutes of inactivity, the screen blanks out and goes to power saving mode. I run awesome window manager and it happens there but also in Gnome Classic mode. (haven't tried unity but I imagine its there too)
Things I've tried:
disabling in gnome-control-center: 'Don't Suspend', Turn off screen Never
gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled --type=bool false
gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/ac_sleep_display --type=int 0
gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout/sleep_display_ac --type=int 0
gnome-screensaver-command -d
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver idle-activation-enabled false
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-enabled false
xset s off
xset s noblank
setterm -blank 0 -powerdown 0
I believe a work-around would be to install caffeine, but I'd rather find a solution without having to add third-party apt repos and install a daemo
HOWTO: Dual Screen in Ubuntu Two Video Cards
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 3, 2005
Here goes:
I wanted to get a dual head (two screen) setup happening in Ubuntu. To date, there is no setup facility to get it going, so it was a matter of setting up xorg.conf to do it for me, which as it turned out was a reasonably simple process. I will relate my process to you, and I hope that if people have managed to do it differently/easier, that they post in this thread.
My Setup:
1 x AGP Video Card (NVIDIA GeForce)
1 x PCI Video Card (NVIDIA Riva TNT2)
1 x Samsung SyncMaster 17" monitor (attached to AGP card)
1 x DELL M770 17" monitor (attached to PCI card)
Nothing to lose.
Now if you have the time, you can put each video card in seperately, boot up the machine and when everything loads (probably not running the xserver properly) type the following to setup your X-system.
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This will run through the process of setting up your video card and monitor and more importantly, create an xorg.conf with info part
Rip a DVD while watching it?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 23, 2005
Hi
I have a collection of about 200 DVDs. The storage space they take up is getting a little out of hand. Since I have a DivX-capable DVD player, I've started ripping them and encoding them as DivX, and can now get about 5 films on a DVD-R. However, its taking forever.
I've got a plan to make a HTPC, and was wondering whether there are any linux programs that might allow me to rip a DVD while watching it, capturing all the subtitles that don't get picked up when ripping normally (as I've found by ripping the bourne identity). That way I can just watch the DVDs as normal, they get ripped as I watch, and I can put the originals into storage in the attic.
Any ideas?
[SOLVED] Log off when playing video files in Ubuntu 11.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 11, 2011
I am not able to play video file using totem, vlc or smplayer. Vlc opens and plays files but if I try to maximize or another command the system logs off, a pop up appears giving me a message about CUPS and battery check(ok). After that I am able to log in again.
I am using Ubuntu 11.04(GNU/Linux) 2.6.38-11-generic i686.
Thank you for your consideration on this matter.
