Solid blue screen after login...Ubuntu upgrade on Sony Vaio with NO Windows!
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 6, 2012
Ok, so I just got this new-old computer from an auction site and it has no Windows. Ubuntu is the only OS on this thing...no windows whatsoever. Anyway, so it was working great until an upgrade pops up...no big deal right? WRONG!!!!!
Damn thing failed and now I get a blue screen of nothing when I log in. Just blue with nothing on it, nothing to click, no error messages... It seems that the Ubuntu console disappeared. It also changed my login box and text colors so its damn near impossible to see...white on white. Not sure what happened but I am one sad Ubuntu noobie!!!!
Whats worse, I have no backup anything. You may pelt me with stones now, I deserve it...I guess I wasnt thinking. And now, I have no clue what to do at all...totally in this over my head. Can anyone give me a simple solution? I dont really know if data is lost or if I just am unable to see it.
Tried downloading a new copy of Ubuntu onto a disk...yeah, nice that they crammed like 10kb extra data an
mouse cursor disappears after login on ubuntu version 10.04
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 17, 2010
I just upgraded from 8.04 Ubuntu to 10.04. The mouse cursor works fine during login. As soon as the system switches to the desktop, the arrow cursor "image" disappears (remains working ..you just can't see it). The OS will also randomly shut down requiring a re boot.
For the mouse cursor I am currently using a work around which is to hit the control button which "locates" the mouse and once located, I move to select and open gnome terminal. Typing a couple of Chars. and mouse movement brings up the "I" bar cursor image, and then the mouse image will operate properly until re boot, where the issue returns.
On the random shut down I am not 100 percent that the system has shut down... it may be that the PC is turning off the monitor (the monitor appears to power cycle over and over until cntl-alt-del is pressed).
As far as the PC I am using:
Dual Boot Linux on hda and XP Home on hdb.
PC is Dell 2400 (I believe built in Intel 945 video card)

Kubuntu 10.04 PlasmaDesktop Malfunction after Login
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 30, 2013
I am using Kubuntu 10.04. I have been noticing few issues with Plasma-desktop lately. After restart, the system freezes at splash screen after login and it opens Yakuake and Firefox. But Kubuntu won't open any Kde applications. Plasma-desktop is also not started. I have a free space of 1.6 in my root partition. I can log into Fluxbox and openbox.
This is the content of the xsession error file. It seems that something is preventing Kde application to get initiate.
Why freezes Ubuntu 8.10 every time after login? (1 month ubuntu worked fine)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 16, 2009
Guys i need your help:
I have a 64-bit system and approx 1 month ago i installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my second hdd (on my first i have Vista)
I had to use the alternate 64 installer because for some unknown reason the live CD always froze when it was loading Ubuntu.
Ok i installed it and all worked except my 108MB g+ USB wireless lan so i used my cable ethernet connection. All was fine for approx 3 weeks i installed various programms w/o any probs.
Then i ordered a new "old" 54MB wireless lan stick which i read should work "out of the box with ubuntu" Meanwhile (approx 1 week) i did not use ubuntu, did my work in my dualboot Vista.
The i got the stick, plugged it in and afte logging in approx 5 secs my whole pc froze, also my mouse pointer.
So i was clueless and tried the recovery mode (xserver, hdd check) and started with different kenrels..nothing.
Last i started the alternate cd and choose repair an damaged system until i came to the point, instal
13.04 upgrade, after login screen desktop goes black
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 4, 2013
I upgraded my laptop to 13.04, and everything worked fine. It upgraded, restarted and I was using it for several days. Recently, some upgrades were available so naturally I let it do its thing. After restart of the system though, the screen goes blank after the login.
Everything looks good and works fine up to that point. As soon as I put in my password and hit Enter, the whole screen goes black.
I was able to still open the terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T, but nothing else to my knowledge.
So my questions are:
1. What happened?
2. How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance!!
IT appears that the proper screen is displayed before login, after suspending the computer, and also if trying to switch to a Guest Session. But as soon as it SHOULD show the desktop, it is only a black screen.
FreeNX terminates session immediately after login (Jaunty 9.04)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 15, 2009
I just installed FreeNX on Jaunty 9.04. After connecting from the client via Windows XP or Hardy 8.04, the session authenticates and the black window with the big "!M" appears for a second or two. Immediately afterward, the session is terminated and the window closes without any errors written to the logs.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Read below for more detail.
