What Linux distro to install in a computer with 64 MB RAM and a Pentium processor
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 19, 2009
I have an old computer. I has only 64 MB ram and a processor which i think is pentium or cyrix(cpuid). Which of the distros is compatible with this? Formerly, it had XP but it crashed and I want to revive this computer. I want Linux to be the new OS for this old computer. I want to use this as an offline computer, just for making documents, presentations and other school work. Any help will be appreciated. And kindly suggest links to the OSs suggested.
By the way it has no CD-ROM, but I can borrow a CD-ROM from a friend.
Thanks and Cheers!
Hoping to hear soon from anyone of you...
Distro for Pentium 200 Mhz 64 MB RAM

I recently found ultra portable Sony Vaio PCG 505 G - 200 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 2.1 GB Harddisk. The label on it says it is designed for Windows 98 but I love linux (have Fedora on my computers).I have 2 main uses - ssh to a server and surf the net if possible. Obviously, I would prefer a distribution that is easy to install. Can someone suggest any distribution that would perform optimally on such hardware?
This laptop has an external CD drive and therefore, I would like to avoid Live CD if I can.
All suggestions are welcome. Thanks!!
[SOLVED] Best Linux distro for old computer with a Pentium II 300MHz CPU and 196MB of RAM?

Okay, firstly hello,it's very nice to meet you all!!! I'm not even fully a beginner yet, so bear with me please!
I've been searching endlessly for 3 days in a row now(reading countless of forums, articles, watching a lot of tutorials) for the Linux distribution that would suit my old computer best. What I'm trying to find is a user-friendly, with a satisfying Office (similar to MS Office 2000 which is installed at the moment), stable and fast OS that would revive my old pc, currently running Windows 98 with some issues!
Again the system specs are: Pentium II 300MHz CPU , 196MB of RAM , above 4GB HDD space(but below 5GB).
From what I've gathered, in these situations Puppy Linux is recommended. But is it possible that Crunchbang or Zorin OS would do better, granted that I want to install Linux on the HDD rather than working with the LiveCD? Would Xubuntu/Lubuntu hold too?
I also read that Debian is for the more advanced Linux user, so should I stay away from it even though it's lighter
please suggest a distro for a Pentium 3 800 MHz with 384 MB RAM

I need an easy to use lightweight distro. I basically want to use the machine for C programming, e-mail, web browsing and watching flash videos (youtube etc...)
I am running linux mint 9 LXDE on it now. The only problem is that when I try to watch flash videos, the CPU usage becomes 100% and some videos don't even play properly. Can something be done about this?
Also, I do not want distros like slackware, gentoo, LFS, etc. I wouldn't know what to do with them.

Best distro for Pentium II 128mb RAM 299Mhz, 6.2gb hdd

I have an old laptop, which is currently running windows 98 very slowly, I don't want to run 98 for many reasons, and instead want to run linux.
The laptops specs: Pentium II 128mb RAM 299Mhz, 6.2gb hdd
Speed is an issue with me, and I'd like the laptop to run as fast as it possibly can, without me having to wait, basically like a nice desktop pc or laptop. And I want to know which distro would run best. Arch linux?
I also plan on installing some nice GUI programs, namely open office. I've been told running open office on this machine will mean open office runs quite slowly, are there any better office suites for the job that can open and save in open document and microsoft file formats?
I dont have many worries regarding the size of the HDD, as linux takes up considerably less room than windows. How much space should I set as swap to optimize the laptops performance but not lose a single unnecersary mb of space? Im not entirely sure how much programs like open office take up on di

I note that you say you are new to Linux, so you won't want anything that requires a lot of configuration: you need something ready to run, not a do-it-yourself kit. You don't say whether you have a video card; if you haven't, then some of that 192GB is going to be grabbed for video.
ZevenOS will run in 192GB and is relatively easy. Both Vector Light and Antix will run in as little as 64GB, so you'd no problem with them. Antix is a bit more friendly than Vector.
