Unity Video Tutorial
Or if needed it is fairly easy to get back to the 'classic' gnome desktop as opposed to Unity.
You can just run this in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
Reboot and then select "Gnome Classic" on the login screen.
For a detailed walkthrough, check the page here.
Also note: In order to make changes to the panel settings, you have to use alt+right click, instead of just a regular right click.

Question about encoding to make it work with iTunes/iPhone
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 1, 2013
I´m seeking help in regards playing screencasted files on iPhone after encoding. I´m not an expert in encoding matters and would be grateful if one of you could help me.
Based on "HOWTO: Proper Screencasting on Linux" (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1392026) I installed FFmpeg on my Ubuntu 12.04.
I started to record my screen based on the information in the aforementioned link:
ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1024x768 -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec libx264 -preset ultrafast -crf 0 -threads 0 output.mkv
This works fine.
Afterwards I encoded the output.mkv file:
ffmpeg -i output.mkv -acodec libfaac -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec libx264 -preset slow -crf 22 -threads 0 our-final-product.mp4
But unfortunately this file can NOT be imported into iTunes. When doing so iTunes is saying:
"our-final-product.mp4" was not copied to the iPhone because it cannnot be played on this iPhone.
Would be great to get a hint how to do the encoding to m
Question regarding Ubuntu Stability
location: linux.com - date: March 5, 2011
Ok so a friend of mine installed ubuntu server 10.10 32 bit on a older test system, he claimed his password wasn't working so I was convinced it was user error and he had a typo in his password. But just yesterday I installed ubuntu server 10.10 plus ubuntu desktop in that order on my fiance's computer and every time we have to use the syn something package program to install new stuff, our password doesn't work. Any time I install something using software center however, the password works fine.
Now I know it's possible that I had a typo in one of the passwords on my fiance's system, but I used the same password for the encryption and everything else to make it easy on her. I don't think I have a typo.
Is this a common issue with ubuntu? Am I missing something? What do you guys think?
Joli OS and Linux Games plus applications question
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 1, 2012
im looking into getting Joli OS, i never had a blackberry or anything to do with apps and im very curious what its like, as i cant afford a new phone, joli os looks awsome since i can do it from my pc
And the fact that i heard it has local files, and synaptic, and all that cool stuff is excellent because it seems i can still do my general linux stuff
But heres the issue, i heard that you need a local operating system ontop of joli os, but im unsure
so like, if i get joli OS, i still want to use my linux apps, like rythmbox, secondlife, nvidia graphics drivers, pulseaudio
secondlife requires alot of the codecs that ubuntu installs on installation when u select add extras, and packages from ubuntu restricted extras, and nvidia drivers
But i have no idea how to set that up, so i thought id come here for advice. on how to go about using jolicloud as an OS and still using all my linux programs
[SOLVED] Lubuntu Install Question REBOOTS after the TRY or INSTALL menu
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 31, 2011
IBM 600X Thinkpad, 328 MB RAM
This laptop is currently running Ubuntu 10.04 just fine....if you count running
I have heard good things about Lubuntu and that it can speed things up, and that it uses pretty much the same installer as Ubuntu. However, just after I select either TRY or INSTALL (it doesn't matter) the screen goes black and the computer reboots.
A fellow on another forum mentioned he has a IBM 600e with only 128 MB RAM running Lubuntu. The 600e is a lessor form of my 600X, both coming out the same year. So, technically, my 600X should have no problems as they are the same machine, I just have more RAM and a higher Mhz.
Does anyone have any ideas what is going wrong? And how I can solve this problem? I can boot Lubuntu liveCD I burned on a desktop machine just fine so, on the face of things, it looks like the cd is OK.
I have a question related to hardware and a possible purchase
location: linux.com - date: November 29, 2012
Currently i am running lubuntu on my core 2 duo 6500 4gb ram 512 mb vid ram nvidia geforce 9300m. Ok so basically i am trying to figure out if i should purchase another laptop for better performance definitely nothing over 500 dollars us. I am currently have a 250 gb hard drive on the laptop but i use my 500 gb external to boot lubuntu and honestly i am totally falling in love with linux all over again. (i've been putsying with it on and off since ubuntu 6.06 or so. I am not very well versed in programming but would like to get to know more as a side hobby if anything. I like to run my emulated games on linux, n64, ps1, gba, gbc,gb,nds, snes, nes, genesis, master system, saturn,i think you get the idea. i am also trying to replace a program in windows that i use frequently thats converts my downloaded comics into smaller sizes for my phone called comicrack. I was thinking i might be able to write a script to literally unzip/unrar the file resize the images and rezip or rerar it and s
SO OVER MICROBLOAT! (Microsoft) Newby question
location: linux.com - date: January 29, 2010
I did some preliminary noodling around this site but wanted to narrow my search for a suitable start point for my research...if that makes sense.
Here are the specifications for my current machine:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Sony Corporation
System Model VGN-A270P(UC)
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~1594 Mhz
Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB ......................(Note: I am upgrading to a pair of 1GB Cards from Crucial)
Available Physical Memory 123.77 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
OK, now on with my question. I have had enough of Microsoft products, but I get the fact that the world pretty much runs on this stuff. Ideally what I am hoping is that I would be able to find a linux based OS that would replace the Windows crap I am currently running. I have already gutted the office
C question: Unix vs Linux
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 1, 2009
I am currently enrolled in a prereq for a masters in comp sci and I am having some problems running a C program on Ubuntu that runs fine on a SUN Unix computer. My professor says that it should work on Linux with one change and that it has worked fine on other student's Linux computers in the past. I have asked him the question and he is unsure of what might be causing the problem and suggested posting to a forum. I am using Code::Blocks IDE and get the following errors:
/home/ryan/CSC389/csc389/loader/semshm.c:86: error: conflicting types for ‘sys_errlist’
/usr/include/bits/sys_errlist.h:28: error: previous declaration of ‘sys_errlist’ was here
I figured that the problem was in one of the #include statements and that I could get around the previous declaration problem by renaming my variable to sys_errlist1 rather than sys_errlist. Unfortunately, when I did this, a lot more errors popped up so I am not sure if I am on the right track or not. I can po
