location: linux.com - date: July 19, 2010
A Canon PIXMA iP2700 Series printer was purchased recently. The referred to driver tar file will not untar using the standard gzip!
A Canon i860 has driver files for Linux only from Japan in Japonese. I cannot read this language.
Anyone with any experience in making Canon printers function under Linux, please tell me how!
Libreoffice 3.6 will not open .ppt files in impress
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 14, 2012
Hello, everyone. I have been trying to open a .ppt file in libreoffice. It does open in the program, but instead of opening in impress, it opens in writer. This leads to a lot of pages and symbols which makes absolutely no sense. I was hoping someone might have a solution for me. Thanks in advance.
Inst linuxmint 15 on dell 1501 will not boot after updating. Need to retreive email
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 15, 2013
Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 that I installed LinuxMint 15 on. It installed with no problems so I set up my email through thunderbird. When I finished entering the proper settings for my email, it downloaded all my email from the server right away. I didn't want it to do that. I thought it would ask me for my password first. I was going to resend all the email back to myself to get it back on the server, but I didn't do this right away. I continued on with doing the updates. After the updates installed, it asked me to reboot. Now when I reboot the computer, the LM logo comes on the screen and thats as far as it goes. I tried rebooting in recover mode and I get pages and pages of text. It goes so far then stops and nothing happens. In the text, I noticed it said that I needed to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect. The only way I could reboot is to hold the power button down to shut it off then turn it back on again. But it just does the same thing. I took the hard dr
Blender will not open on Xubuntu 11.10
- date: September 16, 2012
Hello folks I hope someone here can help me. I have been using Linux Mint for a little over 2 years now and have gotten used to it. However because of some kernel and compatibility problems I had to install Xubuntu 11.10.
Now my problem is that I need to install blender 2.63a which is the latest. I have downloaded it and unpacked it to my home folder as I have always done in Mint. But on Xubuntu 11.10 blender will not open. Clicking on the blender shortcut does nothing and running it from the terminal gives me this error.
./blender: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Installing from the repo is not an option for me since the one on it is a very very old version. Due to some new features that I need it has to be 2.63a.
Also I know there are some 3rd party ppas out there but those only seem to install nightly builds which is also not an option for me as I ca
Removable drives will not mount
location: linux.com - date: August 18, 2010
I recently installed slackware 13.1 32bit version and having problems mounting removable drives. I pluged in my usb drive and did not noticed a flash drive icon appear on the desktop. The system did not say it mounted the drive. I checked the drive in "my computer" , and saw the flash icon in the window browser had a slash going through it. I double ckicked it and nothing happend.
The same thing happens with my dvd drive. A movie dvd was inserted and again no mount notification. I ran serveral media software and none could open it. The dvd-rw icon, again, had a slash going through it. What is causing the removable drive mount failures?B)
NIS: NFS shared home directory will not mount at login can't login through NIS
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 23, 2009
I'm trying to get NIS logons working with my Ubuntu workstation box. I installed, NFS, NIS, and AutoFS. It is definitely binding with the NIS server, and if I log in with a local account, I can mount the share through the mount command.
However when I try to login with an account in NIS, it tells me:
Your home directory is listed as: '/users/ops/<username>' but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the / (root) directory as your home directory. It is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session.
Now <username> is just whatever username I was trying to use, and that's the correct path. The account owns its own home directory there too.
My auto.master file is configured the same as other working linux boxes on the network (albiet RedHat boxes), and I even tried hacking it to point to a auto.home file that I created which has the mountpoint location.
I went through the client config instructions here as well: https://hel
USB 3TB HDD will not partition or mount (hangs)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 21, 2011
I've been pulling my hair out with this one most of the day...
I have three IcyBox IB-351 series (IB-351StU3-B) external USB SATA enclosures. Two contain 3TB drives, one contains a 750G one.
When I connect a 3TB external drive to a machine running Ubuntu Server 10.04.3 and try to access it, it hangs completely. For example, running parted, mounting a partition, or running badblocks. It just hangs and I usually have to kill -9 the process.
I know the enclosure works with 3TB drives, as I can hook the device up to a Windows PC, create a 3TB partition, mount it and use it just fine. I also know the enclosure works with Linux, as the one running a 750G drive works just fine as well. I know it's not a problem with my specific USB controller, as I have hooked the drive up to a different Ubuntu server with different hardware, with the same results. All above operating systems are 64-bit.
The machines are perfectly capable of working with 3TB internal drives.
I have tried swappi
Bind 9 DNS Server not accepting DNS client queries
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 13, 2011
I am sorry to drop this question and tried to search for the simple answer. However I just built a 10.10 server, installed webmin, vmware, and the server is working perfectly.
I configured my bind 9 server using the latest webmin, and on the server everything resolves perfectly to both the interenet and lan. I have it set to 127.0.0.1, the server ip address is 10.1.50.25.
However, it will not accept dns client queries in which they cannot resolve to the lan or internet. I have the dhcp giving out the dns server 10.1.50.25. NSLOOKUPS from the client show query refused.
I know there has to be some setting or config that will allow clients to query but I am not able to locate it, and I am not totally knowledgeable of named.conf and been all through the webmin module and configuration settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, AJ...
Please help Kubuntu reverts to Zulu time, will not let me correct this!
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 1, 2013
You read that correctly, and it's not an allegation that I would make without an investigation first.
At some point, Kubuntu began doing this. Yes, I went through the Settings Date/Time dialog. First I tried the "Set time automatically" option, which it ignored (yes I did hit the Apply button), and then it accepted a manual change of the clock time (not the time zone) until the session expired (always going back to Zulu time (if that's what it's called), or four hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time when the system rebooted).
Somebody on a thread somewhere in the past alluded to the BIOS clock settings, so for what it's worth I checked this. I corrected my BIOS clock by knocking it back four hours, and then I booted into Windows.
In Windows, I surfed the net for about an hour, noting that my Windows time was problem-free throughout that session. But when I rebooted back into Kubuntu, I saw the time change again back to Zulu (on my panel widget), right before my eyes, within
Why Linux will not take over Microsoft anytime soon Page 3

You guys are all missing a very important fact... There is one OS that many people love and agree. It is based on user friendliness, considered and proven better then Windows, and is in-deed a Linux based OS that only a few knew about.
There are an outstanding amount of people, both those who love Windows and/or those who know nothing about Linux, who think this OS is the best.
MAC, OS X (Jaguar) -the "TRUE" 1 click and it does everything OS.
It is 100% compatable with Windows based programs.
It is designed to work under a 128bit processor.
It is designed with the Linux Kernal and has put Macintosh into a new level of understanding for those who seldomly hear it.
It is Linux, with a flavor of Windows (hence WINE WINEX).
On networking problems, it is SO MUCH EASIER to resolve.
If you want a Linux OS "NOW" and can not stand using a OS that is not user friendly, invest a few more $100 on a MAC with OS X.
It is in my opinion, the OS X has in
