hard drive freshly wiped (no file system) will not pick up UBUNTU
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 28, 2007
Hi all
I have just wiped out a hard drive (that was fat 32) to a fresh drive (no file system.) My problem is, is getting UBUNTU to pick up on it, format it to linux specs, and use it.
I added it AFTER I installed UBUNTU on it, if this will help (I'm still new to linux, but VERY familiar with windows.)

Good evening friends,
After many hours of searching online, and pulling my hair out I have finally sunk to send out an S.O.S. to any that would be willing to assist me with my somewhat newbie knowledge of how to correctly configure port forwarding. My initial real problem (that I have been trying to fix by trying all the online tutorials or how to's that I've been finding online) is my torrent client will and would not upload. (I know torrents are a soft subject for the community, but please see past whether this is good or not) I can download with remarkable speeds just fine. I am able to browse the internet with ease.
I have used shields up's service and have found that every single port that I enter or common ports are stealthed.
I have read various places about the /etc/network/interface.
Mine looks like this:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Everytime I try to open firefox i keep getting this message
"We're Sorry
Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.
To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report."
I restarted it, updated it, reinstalled it, but it still wont work. I do not know whats wrong with this, I am running in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, everything was working fine and now all of the sudden it stopped running. If anyone could please help me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance

ubuntu server 12.04 network will not start
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: October 6, 2013
Ok I tried to find this in the forums and no go so far. I just setup an Ubuntu Server 12.04 using ubuntu server 12.04.3 32-bit iso. when I rebooted everything seemed to work, but when I went in tried to update got a bunch of errors. long story short, I checked and networking will not start, it shows stop.waiting when I do sudo service networking start, even though I can do sudo ifconfig eth0 up (same for eth1). I can ping the gateway and other systems outside of this server, but networking still will not start. This is the 32 bit version, I had the 64 bit version and though that might be the problem, but still no change. I have looked around and tried to find a log file to check for network errors, but no luck so far. I have checked out lshw, ifconfig, lspci (every command I can think of) and the network cards show up fine and they are being activated fine, also they look like they work ok, ifconfig and ping prove this. Not sure what to try now, this is driving me crazy. I have u
After installing 13.04 alongside Windows and running Boot Repair, PC will not boot
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 11, 2013
Followed install instructions for Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows 8. Afterwards, PC would only boot into Windows 8. Followed instructions to run Boot Repair. (http://paste.ubuntu.com/5863268/) At the end, Boot Repair said to "Disable Secure Boot". Unfortunately, now when I restart the PC, neither Windows 8 or Ubuntu will boot. PC just freezes with a black screen. Appears to be unable to get into WIndows 8 to disable Secure Boot. When the PC boots, the black screen shows only ">>start PXE over IPv4." Computer is a new Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 8 pre-install with UEFI.
Perhaps there is a way with Boot Repair to re-enable boot to Windows 8 and from there access UEFI to disable Secure Boot? Thanks. Appreciate the help.
Computer will not boot with USB device plugged in
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 19, 2013
I turned on my computer this morning and found that all I saw was the bios splash screen. The BIOS had hung, there where no boot options displayed (normaly it says "F9 Boot Menu F10 Setup" etc).
I have had this problam before when one of my hard drives died, so I tried unplugging my main HD and my CD drive, still wouldn't boot. So I unplugged all the USB devices connected to the computer (after plugging the HD and CD drive back in), and the computer booted. Now there is another issue, I have a power on password, so I need the keyboard plugged in. I tried plugging in the keyboard when it asks me for the password (and not when I press the power button) but the BIOS then hangs at that screen!
I am unable to find a BIOS or CMOS reset pin on my motherboard so I don't know how to take the password off without using the keyboard, I tried taking the BIOS battery out for 5 mins but that did not reset the password. After doing the battery thing, the BIOS stopped hanging, but the key
Installing 12.04 from ISO on USB Thumb Drive. Sony VAIO will not boot from thumbdrive
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 13, 2013
Pretty new to Linux. Just bought a used Sony Vaio. Dual Core E-450 APU AMD Processor 1.65 ghz, I am unable to find the motherboard or BIOS specs. I have the Ubuntu 12.04 ISO copied onto a thumb drive and when I attempt to boot to an external device, I get the message "remove disks or other media/press any key to restart" and it boots right back to windows. I have gone into the BIOS and changed the boot order (there are three options: external device, harddrive, and network) so that the external device is the priority. I have also enabled external device boot in the BIOS. On a Sony forum, it said to tap f11 repeatedly during boot to boot to a USB device, which I did with the same message "remove disks or other media/press any key to restart"
Do I need a new version of bios? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
please wait...
