SSH will not allow root logins
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 13, 2009
Hi there,
First of all, I'm aware that root logins are disabled by default in Solaris 10. Here are the steps I've taken so far:
- Enabled ssh via svcadm enable ssh
- Edited /etc/ssh/ssh_config to include PermitRootLogin yes
- Verified that /etc/default/login has CONSOLE=/dev/console/ commented out.
- Restarted ssh via svcadm restart ssh
- Rebooted the host, and verified configuration files retained their changes.
- Confirmed ssh is running via ps -ef | grep ssh
- Verified ssh is accepting logins with user account
After the above steps, I am still unable to log in with the root account. Telnet is enabled on this host as well, and it accepts root logins without issue.
When I check /var/adm/messages, the only message who's time stamp matches my login attempt is as follows:
Aug 13 12:43:33 uotts047 sshd[1252]: [ID 722452 auth.error] user2netname: (nis+ lookup): Error in accessing NIS+ cold start file... is NIS+ installed?
I do not get this message for s
Removable drives will not mount

I recently installed slackware 13.1 32bit version and having problems mounting removable drives. I pluged in my usb drive and did not noticed a flash drive icon appear on the desktop. The system did not say it mounted the drive. I checked the drive in "my computer" , and saw the flash icon in the window browser had a slash going through it. I double ckicked it and nothing happend.
The same thing happens with my dvd drive. A movie dvd was inserted and again no mount notification. I ran serveral media software and none could open it. The dvd-rw icon, again, had a slash going through it. What is causing the removable drive mount failures?B)
[SOLVED] Microphone will not work with Skype!
location: linuxquestions.com - date: June 29, 2011
Since 'upgrading'(?) from Fedora 14 to Fedora 15 I cannot get my microphone (Logitech USB headset) to work with Skype. It works OK in other applications, such as Audacity.
The headphones work OK but not the mic. When I got to Settings > System Settings Multimedia > Phonon I get set the audio capture to appropriate option (Logitech USB Headset, USB Audio (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output) but the setting does not stay. If I go out of settings and back in again it has reverted to 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo'.
I have searched high and low for a solution but nothing i have tried has worked. This is a major issue as I work from home and use Skype a lot.
By the way, yes I AM using Pulse audio. I did consider uninstalling it but it wanted to uninstall virtually every other application as well.
Linux Mint & Ubuntu install fine but will not boot after install.

So I have this Toshiba Satellite p755 that came with windows 7 at the time.
During a bios update the thing freezes for a couple hours and I eventually am forced to unplug the thing. It turns into a 700 dollar brick that freezes at the windows screen every time.
I decide to just switch to Linux.
Load up Mint and everything is going well. the live cd boots up and the install goes well, everything is great. go through the reboot process, cd pops out, reboots, FREEZES.
I do this a few times before I decide to try ubuntu. same exact thing happens with ubuntu.
as a last ditch effort i decide to try the "boot repair disk" at source forge by yannubuntu
It ran through its thing and said it did some stuff, but the problem persisted.
I am thinking it must be something deeper than the operating system that im running because all three OS's freeze at the start screen.
I thought that perhaps it was the hard drive itself, but then how is mint and Ubuntu able to install
gpointingdevicesettings settings will not stay after reboot
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 18, 2009
I am running a debian squeeze machine on a ibm t40 laptop with window maker as my window manager. I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.
Linux will not play nice with my new motherboard!
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 10, 2009
I recently upgraded my motherboard, and attempted to reinstall ubuntu hardy. I have run into a TON of problems. There's a lot to explain, so let me start with my new specs:
MSI 845 Ultra-C Motherboard
Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU
1 Gig RAM
ATI Radeon X1300
Corsair VX450W PSU (450 watt)
40Gb Master HDD
320Gb Slave HDD
Sony DVD-RW drive (don't feel like finding model #)
Okay, so i did a clean install of windows xp. The installation went slower than i am used to, but since it has installed, i have had no problems running windows. Now when i try to install Ubuntu, or actually ANY distro of linux, the installation runs extremely slow, and then drops to that "initramfs shell" thing. I added "delaytimer=120" to the install command, which gets me (eventually) into the live desktop (takes about an hour just to get past the partition manager), and ultimately fails at about 78%. As i said, this is pretty much the case for every distro i have tried.
Today i successfully

Worked fine last night, rebooted this morning and now Google Chrome will not exit from full screen mode. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling (no purge) and that didn't work. Any ideas?
Canon's iP2700LinuxPackage.tar will not untar!
location: linux.com - date: July 19, 2010
A Canon PIXMA iP2700 Series printer was purchased recently. The referred to driver tar file will not untar using the standard gzip!
A Canon i860 has driver files for Linux only from Japan in Japonese. I cannot read this language.
Anyone with any experience in making Canon printers function under Linux, please tell me how!

How to resume a WGET download? c will not work.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 4, 2009
Okay, I am trying to download Sauerbraten for my Ubuntu. The download keeps timing out, so I thought I would try wget.
wget -r -np -c -U "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; nl; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040916" -e robots=off http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/proj..._linux.tar.bz2
Now, that command SHOULD work, right? Wrong. When the download times out, it starts me again at 0 Bytes. Obviously the server is telling my client the HTTP response 200, which is making the download start from 0, not 206 - Partial content.
"HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK"
So, help, how do I FORCE wget to resume the download, regardless of the HTTP code the server sends? Or is it impossible? The download keeps timing out at ~1%, so then it forces me to start at 0%. My Internet fails, but wget -c'ing stuff normally works, like for YouTube videos.
Thanks in advance.
please wait...
