Environment variables will not save
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 28, 2008
Hello all,
I'm using Hardy and trying to set environment variables for PATH, JAVA_HOME, and CATALINA_HOME. I've used the command
Code:
CATALINA_HOME=/etc/tomcat5.5 ; export CATALINA_HOME
When I
Code:
echo $CATALINA_HOME
it displays correctly, but only for that session. When I exit this terminal session and open it again, the echo command returns a blank line.
This happens when I try to edit any environment variable - it is there for the current session, but not saved.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

grub will not show even if i press shift key
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 25, 2013
I have done many installs and this has never happened before, on my friends machine with a fresh install of win 7 pro i installed Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon, after the install and reboot it went straight into Linux Mint, no grub menu. tried again, same thing. Tried holding shift while booting got a message saying Grub is loading, but didn't load, went straight to Mint again. Did a bit or research on how to configure Grub to show and then checked the installed Mint versions grub config in the terminal and it is all properly commented out and should be visible..anyone seen this before?
Minecraft will not work on Ubuntu 12.04
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 16, 2012
I upgraded to 12.04 yesterday. I was on 11.10 and Minecraft was working fine. I upgraded, and the page to chose "Single Player" MultiPlayer" and "Texture Packs" Doesnt work. The picture shows up, but no background animation, no yellow moving text (The text changes every time I reopen but doesn’t move around) and I can't click anything. I really enjoy playing Minecraft and can't afford a computer that will actually work. I'm starting to get mad that I upgraded to 12.04 (If you know of a way to get back to 11.10, please tell me)
Linux will not play nice with my new Motherboard!
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 10, 2009
I recently upgraded my motherboard, and attempted to reinstall ubuntu hardy. I have run into a TON of problems. There's a lot to explain, so let me start with my new specs:
MSI 845 Ultra-C Motherboard
Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU
1 Gig RAM
ATI Radeon X1300
Corsair VX450W PSU (450 watt)
40Gb Master HDD
320Gb Slave HDD
Sony DVD-RW drive (don't feel like finding model #)
Okay, so i did a clean install of windows xp. The installation went slower than i am used to, but since it has installed, i have had no problems running windows. Now when i try to install Ubuntu, or actually ANY distro of linux, the installation runs extremely slow, and then drops to that "initramfs shell" thing. I added "delaytimer=120" to the install command, which gets me (eventually) into the live desktop (takes about an hour just to get past the partition manager), and ultimately fails at about 78%. As i said, this is pretty much the case for every distro i have tried.
Today i successfully
Server will not reboot from terminal
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 20, 2013
I have a seemingly simple problem I have never encountered before. When I issue the command:
sudo reboot now
My server (HP Proliant N40L, ubuntu 12.04) will not restart! I have to go back home and press the power button and sometimes I have to do a hard restart even after that!
I have been using Linux for about a year now as a home server to store a lot of old files, images, music and videos for my family. I recently built this setup a few weeks ago. Besides this one issue, everything else seems to work fine!
Thanks.
Why Linux Will Not Displace Windows...

... That is the title of the article you can find here.
Some people find it (the comment) funny... I just think it's sad. Ignorance is not bliss.
EDIT: What I'm linking to is just a comment on the article. The article is worth reading too... but that comment is what is sad.
one linux pc prints via wifi, the other will not. WHY???
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 13, 2008
I have two Linux dedicated pcs on a wifi home network sharing a Canon Pixma 4200 printer via a belkin wireless print server. Both are set up with a fully updated 8.04. Both pcs work flawlessley except one prints properly via wifi, but the other, with an apparently identical set-up causes a print job to fail about 1/3 of the way down the first page. The job can then not be re-started without a reboot of the printer and print server. Been trying to sort this all week, and getting nowhere. Can anybody please suggest some things I might try? Have I missed something simple on one of the machines? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
please wait...
