DVD Ripper "Handbrake" for Mandriva
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 6, 2006
Hey guys I wanted to share this with our board for those of you that may be interested in trying this as an educational tool or for your own private use.
I have found a DVD Ripper called "Handbrake" that works beautiful with Mandriva Linux. It took me about a week to figure out, but it allows you to rip your personally owned DVD's and converts them to an MPEG4 file, which allows you to watch on ipods or your personal computer.
I recall I had to install "jam" program and a program named "NASM" and a few lib programs.
I was able to finally figure out how to install, run handbrake on Mandriva 2006 Linux.
My main problem was I was trying to use the "ripper" as "super user" and all I had to do is run as "regular user".
Rip quality was excellent and outstanding!

I'm sure it's probably already been answered, but I can't find it in the searches. Whats a good DVD ripper for Linux?
I AM NOT A PIRATE. I WANT TO RIP DVD'S TO PUT THEM ON MY IPOD.
Something supporting copy protected, very high quality, archive style ripping, to then be converted with other programs for specific purposes. Does such free software exist? Thanks for any info.
What is the best DVD ripper that can do Xvid for 9.10?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 19, 2009
I recently upgraded to 9.10 (with a fresh install). Most of my favorite applications now work better.
Except for one: HandBrake. They have removed Xvid support in 9.4 and 9.3 doesn't work on Ubuntu 9.10.
I have tried DVD::Rip and Acid rip. I found DVD::Rip too complicated and I couldn't figure out how to rip my DVDs. With Acid rip it kept saying I had interrupted it and it stopped ripping my DVDs. I was only browsing the web while I waited for it to finish. How can that interrupt it?
Can someone recommend an easy to use DVD Ripper for Ubuntu that has Xvid support. I desperately need Xvid as it I play my movies on my xboxes running XBMC. They only have a 700MHz cpu and can't handle H.264.

Ripping a DVD with HandBrake fails
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 12, 2009
I'm trying to rip a DVD with HandBrake, and it scans the titles, sees them all, and starts ripping, but, a few seconds in, the DVD drive spins loudly, and HandBrake hangs. I have libdvdcss2 installed, and the DVD plays fine in VLC.
Urgently need a DVD ripper that works

I'm on 10.04
Every dvd ripper ive tried so far has failed in one or another.
I have all restricted extras and medibuntu codecs installed.
DVD::Rip either throws an error message or stops ripping somewhere through the process
Handbrake only finds some of the dvd titles
OGM rip gives an "Unknown error"
Acidrip says "mencoder interrupted by user"
I have to rip a film for somebodies psp for tomorrow
Problems with DVD::RIP on Mandriva 2008
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 22, 2007
Hey guys listen, I haven't messed around with DVD::Rip more than 2 times, I used Handbrake, anyway I did a new install of Mandriva and I am trying to rip my own personal DVD, but for some reason it wont find the DVD player.
I can see that the DVD path is set to /dev/dvd/, but when I trying to navigate to that path using Konqueror, I get a message that folder is not there.
With Mandriva I can see all my hard-drives and the actual DVD player under my "storagemedia" desktop icon, so when I click on the "dvd" icon it shows the path being media:/hdd.
So my question is, do I change the path from "/dev/hdd/" to "media/hdd" ?
Has anyone had any success with DVDrip on Mandriva 2008?
DVD Ripper Recommendations
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 10, 2006
Can anyone recommend any DVD rippers for Linux?
So far I've founddvd::rip - http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/
AcidRip - http://untrepid.com/acidrip/
Thoggen - http://thoggen.sourceforge.net
dvd::rip I couldn't get installed due to Perl errors (running perl -MCPAN -e 'install Gtk::Gdk::Pixbuf' to install spits out make errors). Thoggen I couldn't get installed because of the 'queue' GStreamer plugin not being able to be located. I'm going to check out AcidRip now. I'll try the others again later when I have more time.
Does anyone have any other recommendations?
Command line options are fine too.
