EFI install on non mac
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 17, 2007
I don't know if this topic is for general or distribution, so i upload in here, too. If you think this is unnecessary, remove this post. Hi! And actually, I am not using Mac or iMac, but I'd like to test UEFI. The question is following:
1. How can I install UEFI or similar firmwares? (Or how can I access either RAM or ROM that stores my BIOS?)
(i know what i will have consequences.)
2. Is GParted supports GPT when creating and shrinking partition without having MBR?
3. Is there GRUB 0.97 patch that allows it to be installed in GPT parts and boot from it and reconginze disk that use GPT shemes
4. Does ubuntu or fedora cd allows it to install on GPT partition?
5. if either GParted supports GPT, how can I make my partition to be GPT/MBR Hybrid for installing windows?
Thanks a lot. I have benefited from this forum. Now, I learned a lots of things about fedora, ubuntu, linux, windows, programming etc. If i became a genius in computer, I will contribute as you did.
[SOLVED] ia32libs needed for Mp560 install ..Non Existent > Arch Linux .. Any suggestions ?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 19, 2012
I have a Cannon MP560 that I am having a challenge working on my fresh install of Arch this past week. I have resarched and from what I have read it requires the ia32-libs to function but that is not available in the Arch from what I have found.
I have installed the package ( see below ) from the aur and go to set up and it finds the printer but not the driver. So after you select the printer the selection of drivers does not include the Cannon MP560 ( or any other Cannon ). The program recmends the generic which does not work as well. The funny thing is the scanner works great using simple scan but I can't get it to print.
RHEL 6.1 install on mac mini

Today has not been much fun at all ...
Got a Intel core Duo 64-bit Mac Mini with 0.1GB allocated for MBR and 70GB + HDD && Trying to install x64_86 RHEL 6.1 downloaded from RH 2 days back
Got a windows keyboard and a partial OSX install on the MAC (had to do partial install to get the bloody OSX install disk out - a very long story)
Press ALT during OSX boot on PC keyboard to get choice of boot media (Windows or Mac Disk - neither actually, but I choose Windows ...)
I have the following options for both boot and DVD iso's
- They are on DVD (and my mac mini has a player)
- They are on my other mac which is setup as an NFS server
- They are on a MS-DOS formatted USB stick in the back of my Mac mini
The problems I have with each media type are as follows (This is at the point where Installation Method asks "What type of media contains the installation image" - Now I assume this is the iso, but when I choose -
- Local CD/DVD - I get "Th
Horor or horrors! Trying to do a fedora efi install...

Not getting any love on the fedora forum or the irc channel and not finding any clear cut information on how to do this. I've tried several methods, unsuccessfully and seem to keep running into a wall. I've read thier install guide from the first page throught to the end of section 10 as well as section 15 but the information seems to be incomplete or I'm just missing what I need to know.
Tried livecd-iso-to-disk. The option "--efi" gets me an error in the shell.
Tried making the minimal install media on a usb, followed section 3.3.1 instruction using dd. The usb boots but what I'm faced with is a "grub>" line which I don't know what to do with and I'm not seeing instructions on what to do from there or even if that's what is supposed to happen.
Can anyone, for the love of god and all that's good, please help?
Sorry to vent a little frustration here. I would sincerely appreciate some help if anyone can do it.
Grub2+EFI on a Mac Book pro
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 15, 2010
Anybody recently succeded in installing GRUB2 on Mac OSX partitions? I have to compile in un Fedora/Ubuntu/Gentoo. It work, but once back in OS X, I get this error:
./grub-mkimage -d . -o grub.efi part_gpt hfsplus fat ext2 etx3 ext4 normal sh chain boot configfile linux
-bash: ./grub-mkimage: cannot execute binary file
I tried to build it in Ubuntu 8.04, gentoo and Fedora Rawhide, all fail with the same error. Look like the binary compatiility between OSX and Linux is broken in Leopard.
I would love to have a faster boot, it take half a minute to get to grub, using Grub2 with EFI would take 3 seconds. As I don't need bios emulation, Fedora would also run faster. Anybody have a compiled and working Grub2?
I followed this tutorial:
Is there a better way to use Grub2 with EFI? A working one if possible

Trying to install on Mac g4 no joy
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: July 27, 2010
I'm getting very frustrated now!!
Have old(ish) Mac G4 it's a Quicksilver single processor, 867Mhz, with 1.2GB Ram and a 60GB hard-drive.
Will comfortably run Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)
I wish to use this mac as a Ubuntu system, with HFS+ 500GB sata hard-drive (as second, non-booting drive) using an internal PCI SATA controller card.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on the mac. I've tried:
10.04 live (both PPC version and regular, PPC version I've even redownloaded and reburnt to a new disk)
9.04 Ubuntu PPC version
Ubuntu 6.06 PPC alternative install
and even tried Debian 5
All the above open to a "prompt" where I've tried install, tried the video=ofonly, nosplash etc etc and the powerpc versions etc etc
All I get is a hanging solid White Screen - for upto an hour, no harddrive sound and I think the CD drive has stopped doing anything. Tried pressing a few keys too, nothing.
With one exception and t
Only able to boot into bios after efi install of Ubuntu 14.10 on new hd
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 29, 2014
Hello, I've previously installed Ubuntu successfully on a much older computer in legacy bios mode, but I finally upgraded and built a new pc over the holidays which has an asus z97-a motherboard with uefi bios with secureboot enabled. I wanted to try to take advantage of the uefi and secureboot if I could after successfully testing my hardware on a Ubuntu live usb uefi flash drive. (I'm only installing Ubuntu 14.10 on a new sata hd, not Windows or any other OS.)
So after much researching, I used gparted in live mode to create a new gpt partition on a blank sata hd and an efi boot partition (with efi boot flag enabled). Then used the Ubuntu installer "something else" setting to create the rest of my partitions. In all, an efi boot partition, swap and root (ext.4) (primary, no logical partitions) on sda drive, just Ubuntu 14.10 with very simple partitioning (and secureboot enabled in bios)....After installing, I shut down the computer, removed the usb flash drive and started
Graphics does not display during Linux dual boot install on Mac OS X
location: linuxexchange.com - date: May 7, 2015
I am currently running a 2015 Macbook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.2.
I downloaded Linux Mint 17.1 and Ubuntu 14.04.2 both of which are 64 bit versions. I manually created a live USB for each OS using the instructions found on the Ubuntu page. I also installed rFEInd bootloader. When I boot the Mac the live USB does not show up in rEIFind's menu but by booting while holding the alt-key I am able to go into a live session of both Ubuntu and Mint, but when I try and install the distos by clicking on the "install linux" icon, the window shows up but no buttons or any other graphics is displayed. I tried by directly installing Ubuntu instead of "trying Ubuntu" but that just ended up with a pure grey install screen.
Any suggestions on how I may fix this? Thanks

cannot install logentries mac agent on os x yosemite
location: linuxexchange.com - date: September 26, 2015
I tried to install logentries (mac agent) as instructed by the website itself.
. I followed the steps as instructed.
curl -O ttps://raw.githubusercontent.com/logentries/le/master/install/mac/install.sh
I downloaded the install.sh script and run "sudo ./install.sh" . But that didn't work so i tried "sudo sh install.sh"
When I do "sudo le" then I get same error message as marked in pic above.
I googled but didn't find the solution.
Thank you in advance.
