Wireless Won't connect No Linux experience
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 27, 2013
I got a computer for my son in which the previous owner had installed Ubuntu 12.04. The factory OS is Windows 7. We are completely unfamiliar with Linux/Ubuntu. When trying to connect to our wireless the wireless light flashes endlessly until eventually the computer gives up trying to log on. What can we do? I have seen postings asking similar if not same question, but I am having trouble following the answers as I have NO experience with Linux. The laptop is a HP Elitebook 6930.

No Linux will boot up (LiveUSB)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: February 23, 2013
Hallo,
I'm new to Linux and want to try it out, so I chose Linux Mint. I hope you can help me.
Now, I tried alot of things, I have a sheet full of commands, errors and boot parameters on my desk, but I can't get Linux to boot. This is my hardware configuration:
ASRock B-75 Pro3-M - UEFI firmwareIntel i5-3450Nvidia GeForce GTX 560Ti8GB Corsair RAM
Goal: Dualboot Win7 64bit + Linux Mint 14 64bit
What I already tried:
Various boot parameters: nomodeset, no(l)apic, acpi=off, reboot=bios, irqpollBooting from different USB drivesmint4win.exe
How far I got:
I have a Linux Mint 14 64bit USB created with Universal USB Installer.I boot it in UEFI mode. (if I try in BIOS mode it's the same problem)I edit the boot parameters for the first option - "Start Linux Mint":
nouveau.modeset=0noquiet, nosplashI get some rolling text ending with: "[sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk", below there is a blinking cursor, I can write something in this stage. If I press CTRL-ALT-DEL now, I

Is there really no linux text editor with smart line wrapping?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 23, 2011
Hi all,
I'm looking for a linux text editor (in this case for Latex, but just in general) which has smart line wrapping (soft line wrapping).
i.e., does this:
Code:
\subsection{My subsection}
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nunc
congue dui nec purus semper id egestas mi ullamcorper.
and not this:
Code:
\subsection{My subsection}
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nunc
congue dui nec purus semper id egestas mi ullamcorper.
I have tried: Kile, vim, emacs, nano and gedit.
The only thing i've found which actually does it so far is Notepad++, but i need to run that under wine (which isn't as nice as running a native app).
Any suggestions?
Ubuntu, no linux please. (blog)

Everyone should read this blog, this guy makes some really really good points about the portrayal of Ubuntu. I personally agree with him, and I can't believe that the rule of not using jargon in the websites and such was overlooked. (I missed it too).
As an experiment I'm just going to tell people about Ubuntu, I'm not going to bother mentioning Linux, and all that other stuff.
So the argument against this is that mentioning Linux/debian serves to support Ubuntu's claim of stability. I don't think that's a good argument as the people who know what makes up Ubuntu already know about debian and Linux in general, and the people who don't know probably don't want to waste time finding out; they just want something that works.
what are your opinions on this blog and all that?
No linux work on my desktop (vga problem?)
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 9, 2014
Hi
I tried to install ubuntu 13.10 many times on my old desktop (Gigabyte M61PME-S2, Athlon 4450e, 1gb ram)
Results are terribly wrong. Installation looks ok, no problems. But, when the login screen shows, there is system crash, next time even earlier:
http://w619.wrzuta.pl/film/5PIdvy3RKAp/ubu
On Live situation is the same, only this time I have few seconds more...
http://w619.wrzuta.pl/film/auqWmJqngRP/live
I tried to use Suse 13.1
Exactly the same situation - system crashes with the same effect of shuttered screen as at the end of live video from my link.
Ram is ok, memtest shows no errors, totally no problems with Windows XP.
I'm quite experienced with windows, but total newbie with linux (everytime, when i try to convince myself for migration, something go wrong... this time it looks like graphic card problem)
Anybody can help?
No linux installer in UT2004 DVD
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 26, 2011
Hello all,
I have the Sold Out Software UK version of Unreal Tournament 2004. I've tried running it under WINE but that didn't work that well. I then found out that they made it for Linux but there was no linux installer in the DVD.
Any ideas, or should I get another retail version?
Thanks
Michael
unreal engine games with no linux version?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: February 6, 2006
in reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_engine I see the listed unreal engine versions and which games use each engine. Under every engine I see a game available for linux.
what I want to know is why havn't the rest of the games been ported?
http://icculus.org/~chunky/ut/unreal/ : unreal 1 got to become a linux game because UT was already ported and they both use the same engine.
http://icculus.org/~ravage/devastation/ : devastation became a linux game and it uses the unreal warfare engine same as ut2003 & ut2004.
Did the community just get lazy? Or is there a step in the process of porting a game that cannot be done for the others?
All answers are appreciated but I would like someone seasoned to tell me so I can better understand.
please wait...
