Is Gnome or KDE lighter weight???
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 7, 2005
I have an older laptop...PIII 650 with 192Mb...Is Gnome or KDE a better choice? KDE seems more bloated to me but I love the artwork/icons/controls etc... I have already looked at XFCE4 and Fluxbox but I don't like either one of those too much.

Which one is faster? GNOME or KDE?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 18, 2007
Okay, we all know tha XFCE and other lightweight DE are quite fast, so let's not talk about them here.
I am very curious about KDE vs GNOME in terms of speed. I know it is a sensitive subject, so let's keep cool!
I am not very techy, and I don't know the details of internal working of the 2 "big DEs". I would like your opinion, tho, about which one is the fastest one of the 2: Gnome and his C libraries or KDE with with it's C++ libraries (if that makes any difference, I don't know).
Unable to log into Gnome or KDE using gdm (Debian sarge)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 22, 2003
I am not able to log into Gnome or KDE. I have the latest version of netinstall (12-17-03) for Debian sarge, everything was installed last night. When I attempt to log into Gnome (as a user or as root) the session times out in 10 seconds. This is at the bottom of the log file generated:
line 90: xrdb: command not found
line 90: xrdb: command not found
/usr/bin/gnome-session: No such file or directory
When I try to log into KDE I get an error message that asks if the dcopserver program is running. It will let me log in but then dumped me back out.
Also, how does one get hold of the error messages/log files from Windows so that I might copy & paste them here? This is my only functional operating system until I can get Linux to work for me.
Thanks for the assist!
gnome or kde
location: linuxquestions.com - date: September 26, 2011
I know this is an opinion based question, so please feel free to share what you think.
I've used both KDE and Gnome, i've always preferred gnome but recently I do not like the changes that have been made. But at the same time I want the latest and greatest so I think i'm going to try out one of the newer versions of kde.
I really like Email, and instant messanger integration in gnome, is there some form of this in new KDE? I absolutely hate unity in gnome, is kde trying out something drastically new as well? will I run into the same troubles?
I've used recent releases of gnome but not of KDE, what are your opinions on new gnome vs new kde,
Gnome or KDE: That is the question
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 7, 2009
What are the major differences between them and which is better (figuratively speaking). I have read many things online that tell me (the new guy that is not understanding it properly) that they are almost identical, one a little more cosmetically pleasing than the other. This I find difficult to believe. To many man hours have gone into either of them for them to be the same.
I have used the LiveCD for many distributions of Linux (Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Fedora, OpenSUSE to name a few) and have settled on one in particular, Solaris. I have purchased the CD and, when the new replacement HDD gets here, will be installing it and converting everything to it.
My question is…
What are the NON-cosmetic differences that you have found that would help me decide which to use?
Thank you for looking, your advice and experience will be well received.
