Game programming non blocking key input
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 16, 2009
Hi, I've been to a zillion websites where this question was asked but nobody actually gave a satisfying answer.
Am working on Linux...using C++ and compiling with g++.
You could also skip to the last paragraph I've typed.
I'm making a game and I need the monsters to continuously keep moving. When the user shoots by pressing the up arrow key, the bullet function is called.
if (k==up_arrow_key) shoot();
The program shouldn't reach the "k=keyJustPressed();" line and wait till the user presses a key. It should just check if there's any information to read from the keyboard buffer and if there isn't then it should go on to the next line.
People have suggested getch() and alternatives to it. But there's no conio.h in linux. The mygetch() in linuxquestions.org faq won't do the job coz it waits for the user's input.
Found a piece of code which closely matches what I need, but it cou

I'm not looking for any specific genre of games, just those who have the most online users.
What distro uses the latest kernel 2.6.34xx?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 24, 2010
I am using x200 Thinkpad and the current kernel of 2.6.32 has a acpi bug that does not allow the fan to throttle down so it keeps blowing forever. Apparently the 2.6.34 lernel has fix for this. Could anyone suggest a distro that is currently using this new kernel--the distro should be at least a beta or RC release, so I could use it in peace.
What is the absolute latest MySql client library version
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 31, 2013
I run a Debian LAMP server. I've been using the default MySql package a very long time. Currently I've been reading about MariDB. So I replaced mysql-server with mariadb-server. Simply to try it out.
There are two version of mariaDB for Debian. They are 10.0 and 5.5. The default Debian MySql client version is 5.5 so naturally I implemented MariaDB 5.5.
That way my server version and my client version both match. (5.5.31)
This got me thinking. I've never really thought about the MySql client version before. What exactly is it? Is it a specific package or is it a package of PHP. What exactly is it, and what is the latest version floating around out there. I do not mean specifically on Debian. I mean what is the most cutting edge version any where.
If there is a MariaDB 10.0 what Mysql client version would correspond with it?
AM I making any sense at all? Thanks.
How to analyse a video and find out what codec it uses and other info
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: November 18, 2011
In Ubuntu how can I find out what codecs (as in how the video and audio streams are encoded) a video contains? There must be some kinda simple program that will tell you everything about a video file such as how the video stream is encoded, how the audio stream is encoded, if it contains subtitles or not etc. Avidemux is a brilliant video editing program that I use to convert video files but as far as I know it doesn't give you info on video files.
What Game Controllers/Pads/Joysticks Do You Use?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 1, 2007
I purchased two Game Elments GGE909 controllers from Walmart. At first everything was pretty good, but now that I am playing games regularly I am noticing that the controllers work inconsistently.
Sometimes buttons stop working, and others the entire controller doesn't work. I am guessing this is a driver issue, but I am considering taking them back since I still have the receipt and boxes. I've noticed a lot of Windows users complaining about the Game Elements controllers online.
What game controllers do you use with Ubuntu, and how well do they work? I am interested in purchasing a controller that a lot of people have had success with.
Cluster computing game server? What linux distro?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: January 25, 2012
I recently obtained a handful of old computers/old computer parts, and I'm looking to turn them into a game server for me and my friends. I've done a little bit of research, and apparently something called "Cluster Computing" could help me accomplish this. I intend to follow This tutorial
These computers were all built to run windows, and I was recently told by a friend that I should run Fubuntu or Kubuntu on them because of that.
Does anyone have any insight to this situation? Like what distro I should install on each computer, how to cluster compute, or turn said cluster computer into a game server? I'm kinda lost, and google hasn't helped too much.

What 2D Linux Game Engines are out there?
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: June 1, 2009
I ask this because I'm looking to make some old-school-style adventure games (Think of the mid-90's era for LucasArts, Interplay, and Sierra)
I would greatly appreciate if anyone could point me towards a portable, lightweight engine licensed under either the GPL or a BSD license. It would be nice if the engine could easily be tweaked to do the following:
-Creation of a custom in-game interface.
-Multiple cursors with each cursor serving a function. Right clicking would change the cursor. Most adventure games have Walk, See, Do, Talk, and Inventory Item.
-Control a single player character that is capable of audibly interacting with NPC's.
I'm sure that, given enough time, it would be possible to achieve this oneself. I am looking to write portable, free games. My goal is to improve my writing, drawing, animation, and programming skills. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
