MPlayer + other video players do not work, HP DV71451NR, Radeon HD3200, Lucid
location: linuxquestions.com - date: July 10, 2011
I recently upgraded to resolve a problem with Wireless. The new kernel does wireless fine, but along the way my video playback was destroyed.
Prior to upgrading video looked great. Now it's a dog's breakfast. The longer it goes, the muddier the output gets, and the audio is filled with pops and cracks.
I've tried to do research, and it seems there is a lot of concern about FGLRX, which is apparently a proprietary driver from ATI, but how it fits into Catalyst, I do not know. I tried downloading and installing the Catalyst 10.8 package from ATI, but it didn't seem to change anything. The current Catalyst version is 11.6.
It's possible that ATI has abandoned lower graphics sets, including the HD3200, but I can't get that confirmed.
Athlon X2 CPU, 2.2 gHz, 4 gig memory, 2 1/2 terabyte hard drives, Lucid Lynx 10.04 32-bit.
I don't mind trying suggestions out, and I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. I don't know what to try next.
SSH Command Keys Do Not Work When Logged in as New User
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: August 26, 2013
I have a really weird problem. When I log in normally everything works fine. However, if I switch to the new user, which is not in the sudoers file(shouldn't be relevant), all command keys don't work. When I press the up key, for example, it displays ^[[A. Also the terminal always displays a '$' no matter what directory I am in.
I am pretty sure this is not a su problem because I can do sudo su without a problem. If I login directly to the new user, with SSH, I have the same problems.
http over browser works but ssh/nslookup/ping do not work
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: March 18, 2011
I am mostly new to ubuntu and networking.
I am able to browse the internet using my browser but anything else like trying to ssh/ping/nslookup does not work.
I believe it is a configuration issue where my network configuration and in particular my nameserver is not correctly specified but I don't know how to fix
Ping not working:
$ ping http://www.cnn.com
ping: unknown host http://www.cnn.com
This ssh server was up when I tried this:
ssh: connect to host unix.andrew.cmu.edu port 22: Connection refused
Nslookup not working:
$ nslookup http://www.cnn.com
** server can't find http://www.cnn.com: NXDOMAIN
And finally, my /etc/network/interfaces file:
iface lo inet loopback
How come by browser can find http://www.cnn.com but ping can't?
SSH Tunnels do not work
- date: December 20, 2012
The command should have been:
laptop# ssh -CTnN -o 'ServerAliveInterval 60' -o 'ServerAliveCountMax 3' -i ~/.ssh/keys/special.key -R 80:localhost:80 [email protected]
I have setup a ssh tunnel between my laptop and a remote server to forward my laptop's port 80 to remote server's 80.
Laptop's apache is running and listening on 0.0.0.0:80(though in this case listen address doesn't matter as apache would always get requests from local ip, unless i am mistaken), and apache is configured to "Allow from all" against "Location /" with no access overrides within any vhost. Only default vhost is enabled.
I have been trying to access apache using remote server's domain(using IP causes same effect) but it keep loading forever. Remote server's firewall does allow port 80. Laptop's apache log level is set to debug everywhere and no log files are updated. I did restart apache on laptop multiple times. On remote server telnet to localhost:80 also hangs f
Rsync Only copy files that do not exist at the destination directory?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 17, 2012
I can't seem to figure out what combination of switches will get Rsync to only copy files from a source dir to a destination dir if that file DOES NOT exist at the destination. In other words I do not want to overwrite any files on the destination, even if they are older.
How to find directories that do not have a certain file
location: linuxquestions.com - date: May 28, 2010

[SOLVED] Linux Mint After update network settings do not work
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 15, 2012
In the control center, the only option under Internet and Network is network proxy, which is of no use to me.
Under System, there is a Network Tools option, and here I can see the connections available on my machine (lo, eth0 and wlan0)
I am trying to disable the wlan0 to save power and just keep it off, and I would like to be able to configure the eth0 connection... okay sounds easy enough right..?
Well clicking on configure after selecting a device opens the "Network Connections" dialog (same one from Other section of CC).
However: there are no connections available! Under wired, when trying to add a connection, all the options are greyed out. I am wondering if possibly running Network connections as root would help, but there is no way to run it elevated from the control center.
Am i doing something wrong?
(it seemed to work previously... however that was thru the gnome-panel->network option, it showed all of the wireless networks available and it was q
Debugging Kernels that do not completely die (no Panic)
location: linuxquestions.com - date: October 21, 2012
I am looking for a way to debug a kernel lockup condition. I am trying the new kernel 3.7.0 rc2. It is working for about 40 minutes and then it is freezing. The keyboard is frozen, the display is frozen and the sound card is continually playing the last second or so. What I would like to do is get a good trace of where this is happening. I have checked the /var/log/messages on the next boot, and the dmesg and do not see anything of note. Any ideas? I am a newbie with kernel debugging, although I have successfully built the kernel from source and set a few options in it.

[SOLVED] How to script csv editing? Remove rows from csv file that do not contain certain text
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 3, 2012
I have a csv file with a column for states. How do I write a script to remove all rows that are not "NY" in that column? I'm not even sure where to begin, as I don't know of any tools to edit csv files from the command line.
If anyone knows where to point me, or knows a short script that does this, it would be much appreciated.
[SOLVED] iSight webcam do not work despite extracting the Apple driver.
location: linuxquestions.com - date: November 28, 2013
I am dual-booting Slackware 14.0 (not current) on a Macbook 5,2 white from 2009, with Mac OS X. http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...dia-specs.html
Since I wanted to use the iSight webcam for skype, I used isight-firmware-tools and followed the instructions here http://bovitron.com/README.Slackware and the driver was successfuly extracted. I rebooted but still skype refuses to recognize it and no webcam at all is detected. However, on Mac OS X, I tested iSight and it works well.
What should I do?
