[11.04] Keyboard shortcuts do not work after window close, if conky is running
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: May 10, 2011
1. I open an application e.g. terminal
2. I close the application's window
3. Keyboard shortcuts do not work at all and if I want them back working, I have to click on the desktop's background
I bet it has something to do with focus or compiz settings, because I've already had some problems with those in Unity. Now I'm on the "classic" ubuntu desktop. It didn't happen before upgrade.. Please help me. This is very inconveniant.
Host OS Shortcut Keys do not work While VMWare Workstation is Running.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: April 28, 2008
I installed Hardy from a clean installation and VMWare Workstation 6.x. I had some trouble installing VMWare, and found a workaround here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=770716
My problem is that when I am running a Guest OS in fullscreen, I lose control of the keyboard shortcuts on the Host OS. For example, I cannot alt-tab, ctrl+alt+D, ctrl+alt+L, etc. All the desktop effects are not available as well. When I close VMware, I still have the same problem until I restart X or the computer.
Any ideas? Let me know if I can provide more information.
Thanks!!!!
ctrl+alt+ fn1 , fn2 etc do not work
location: linuxquestions.com - date: January 27, 2010
I am using opensuse 11.2 on my dell studio 14 laptop and to my surprise the key combination for bringing up text based console does not function as expected.
when I press ctrl+alt+ fn keys I am greeted with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+F7 brings me back to the GUI plasma desktop.
Does this have to do something with the acpi=off thing I did for booting successfully into linux ( without this option, the screen would go off and not respond to anything ... physical restart was the only option). although my system starts off without any fuss, OS does not detect the battery of my laptop.
more problems will come up later presently whats bugging me is this.
help me out.
OnlyShowIn and NotShowIn Directives Do Not Work in XFCE
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 3, 2008
Long ago in a galaxy far away I noticed that the OnlyShowIn and NotShowIn desktop file directives did not work in Xfce. Specifically, the ~/Desktop/Home.desktop and ~/Desktop/trash.desktop icons display on the Xfce desktop. With the OnlyShowIn directive set to KDE or the NotShowIn set to XFCE, these icons should not display. They do.
My solution long ago was simply to disable desktop icons in Xfce. Recently I decided to enable the desktop icons. Same problem.
I tested this in Xfce 4.4.3 in Current. I tested in Zenwalk 5.2 in a virtual machine. Same results with both desktops.
The OnlyShowIn and NotShowIn desktop directives function correctly in KDE.
Any ideas how to fix this other than some kind of shell script hack? Why don't these directives work correctly in Xfce? Have they ever worked correctly?
Thanks again.
[SOLVED] GNOME display only shows cursor and wallpaper and rightclick also do not work
location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 23, 2013
Hi,
I just started having this problem suddenly.
When I log in locally, only cursor and the wallpaper show up (no icons, menu, etc.). The right-click also does not work. But if any other user, including root, logs in, it works fine!
Same thing happens if I try to log in to any other machines (our home directories are NFS mapped). This leads me to believe something got corrupt in my home, but I cannot fathom what!
Everything seems to work fine if I switch my desktop session from gnome to kde!
So I tried deleting .gnome, .gnome2, .gnome_private, .gnome-desktop, .gconf, and .gconfd directories with hope that something was corrupt there and when I log in next, they will be created automatically with correct parameters. But this did not help. The directories were created, but my problem remains same.
Also I can log in fine via ssh. But if I want to launch something like gedit GUI from ssh -X sessions, no display is launched, no warning or errors are also shown on the termina
msi wind u100 microphone and webcam do not work
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: September 21, 2010
Hi guys and gals,
I have installed ubuntu remix on my msi wind u100. It is great, aside from one thing, the microphone is not working. I have 10.04 lucid lynx edition. Fortunately, no flickering screens or other big problems.
But I desperately need the microphone to work, I must use it on skype. I tried installing a "backport" package, which did nothing. I also installed the gnome alsa mixer. In there I can see the two microphone ports, but unmuting or moving the sliders does absolutely nothing for me. My skype only shows me the pulseaudio server - nothing else. the main sound program (on the taskbar) does not recognize any microphones. Even though it should find two - the built in one and the external one.
Any ideas on where to begin fixing it?
DELL Vostro 1400 Laptop built in Web Camera, Mic and Speakers do not work.
location: ubuntuforums.com - date: December 21, 2008
I have a DELL Vostro 1400 Laptop came preloaded with MS Vista. It had endless problem and the system was all the time under service. The entire warranty period was spent in trouble shooting by DELL. They changed many hardware and they could not find out the actual problem.
Finally, I decided to go for Ubuntu as I had used it for some time 2 years back with my desktop system. This time, I decided to have only Ubuntu partition and no dual boot. Initially, I tried Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Except the following most of the work I could do with out any problem:
1. Laptop integrated web camera
2. Laptop built-in mic near the camera
3. Built-in speakers
4. Wireless connectivity
I have a broadband connection and able to manage with out wireless connectivity. With vista, the first three was working well but wireless connectivity had problem.
I need to communicate with friends using videoconferencing. Therefore, I want the first three problems to be solved together on priority basis. Kindly

Hi there!
I am trying to download videos from these 2 sites:
http://www.megatv.com/megagegonota/s...pubid=30403231

I am using Firefox and various plugins (like Download Helper, FlashGot) but with no success.
In the first case, the video does not show up at all at the download plugins. I check the site source and see lines like the following:

[SOLVED] rm files that do not match a given pattern
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 13, 2010
Hello,
I'm trying to delete all the files in the current directory that doesn't match the pattern *.tex. Is there a switch in rm that inverts the match (something like grep's "-v" option)?
Thanks!
