Is Linux Right For Me?
location: linux.com - date: April 11, 2010
I hate windows, hate hate hate, and that alone is probably reason enough to switch, but I am worried about things with linux..... Mainly I use my comp for school, downloading content via piratebay/isohunt, light gaming (have an xbox 360), media (HDMI to TV), you know, the normal stuff, here are a few questions I have....
How easy is it to switch?
Will I still be able to do those things I have listed?
What distro is good for me?
I have heard linux isn't very pretty (doesn't matter too much, just wondering) but how bad is it?
Any key advice for a new user?
I really want to make the switch, but I use my computer constantly and can't afford too much downtime, I am fairly good with a computer, just do not do any programming stuff,
Thanks for any help and I really appreciate it,

Help me choose a new (old) video card for Ubuntu?
location: linuxquestions.com - date: December 21, 2008
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04LTS (Hardy Heron) on a home brew tower based on a K7S5A motherboard, with an AMD Athlon XP1600+ (1.8GHz) maxed out at 2GB DDR RAM. The video card currently is an AGP nVidia GeForce2 MX/MX400 (64Mb), but this is no longer supported in the new 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) release. The MoBo supports AGP up to 4x, and I have a spare PCI slot.
What I would really like is something a bit more modern, with more memory (>64MB) but with no cooling fan. I don't play games, but I do like to watch DVDs and TV from my Hauppauge pci card. Also I would like to have some features of compiz running.
So what video card could I find cheaply on eBay, that would suit my hardware and be supported? Not too new - I have no PCI express or DDR2/3. Most fast graphics cards seem to have huge noisy fans. I know nVidia are generally the better supported, but will consider anything that would be an improvement over my current card.
Any suggestions please?

Ubuntu Server needs to inform me of a new IP address when it changes
location: linuxquestions.com - date: April 19, 2013
I am running an Ubuntu gaming server on my home network, behind a router and firewall. My ISP is Verizon, and my external IP address changes from day to day, rarely going a week the same. This makes it difficult for other people to access my server consistently, and requires me to get a complaint, go home, check my IP, and then tell them all. Verizon doesn't think I pay enough to have a static IP, and I agree.
How can I get Ubuntu to check what the external IP is, and then forward that information in the form of a text or email if the results have changed? I have rudimentary Ubuntu skills, and my reaction was to write a script checking the IP and then sending the updated address to an (e)mailing list of recipients. I would then have cron run the script every ten minutes or so.
1: Is that idea feasible?
2: Would someone help me write that script if so?
3: What is a better idea?

location: linux.com - date: January 21, 2010
It is my first message here as you can see. I am writing here because I am looking for a Linux distribution that will be working the best on my computer. I would also like to play Diablo 2 on my PC (that is the one and only game I play)
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 240 Processor 2.80 GHz 64-bit
Motherboard: ASUS M4A785TD V-EVO integrated with ATI Radeon HD 4200
2 GB RAM
Please consider it, I am new to this OS but if something is really good, I will learn it very fast. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
best distribution for me for C/C++ 3D OpenGL GLSL [eclipse IDE/CDT]
location: linuxquestions.com - date: August 4, 2008
I know everyone hates the question "what is the best distribution", because the question leaves out "best in what ways" and "what bugs and delights the questioner most". So I'll try to ask the question better, and request answers only from people who have tried several distributions.
Here are elements I need (probably some of these are solid in every Linux):
+++ the linux distribution that supports my needs with the least troubles
+++ nvidia driver support (for 7800 and 9800 (and soon 280))
+++ C/C++ development tools with IDE
+++ OpenGL 2.0 or higher
+++ GLSL shader support
+++ GLEE or equivalent
Here are elements I want to have:
+++ the latest release of eclipse IDE (3.4+) and CDT (5.0+) install and work reliably
+++ informative graphics information utilities (like glinfo, glxinfo, GUI equivalents)
+++ latest GLEE installs and works easily (i just include the files into my project)
+++ most helpful and knowledgable distribution experts in the di
Is linux right for me?
location: linux.com - date: May 17, 2009
Hi, im thinking about converting from windows, and i need to ask a few questions before i do.
Regaurdless, i have notebook PC x32/x86 bit, 2GB RAM, and a 120GB HDD, and an intel Video card, a RealTek wireless card, and i have a 500GB external hard drive.
since im on a laptop(that thinks its a desktop) i need to know if i will be able to use the touchpad (i backed up all the corresponding files for it).
i also need to be able to use a few programs...
1. Adobe Photoshop CS2
2. Autodesk 3DS max 2009 x32
3. Steam to play Counter strike source, and work on my own source mod.
4. Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0
5. My wacom tablet
i backed up all the files for all these programs on my external HDD
please respond fast, ill be doing this tonight.
P.S. what i mean by, the laptop that thinks its a desktop is that, my laptop has no screen, and a big monitor, and a external mouse, and an external HDD (as well as an internal one) and an external source system.

location: linuxquestions.com - date: March 23, 2012
I've came across strange bug, and it's related to baobab or something deeper. Ubuntu still keeps warning about low disk space and i can't switch off it.
I tried using baobab (disk analyzer) and i unchecked all of disk, media, even / but it still keeps me warning.
I found on www that we can do it from configurator-editor in
